  • Hornady's Lock-N-Load® AP™ Progressive Press is a favorite of reloaders who want to crank out a lot of high-quality handgun ammo FAST. Brownells Gun Tech Steve Ostrem walks us through the process of setting up a Lock-N-Load AP, from unboxing a brand spankin' new one, to bolting it to your reloading bench to installing the shell plate and priming mechanism. Steve then installs the powder measure, including the Powder Cop, which tells you if a case gets too little or too much powder, before he wraps up by setting up the bullet seating die. Steve's most important piece of advice for L-n-L setup? READ THE INSTRUCTIONS.

Hornady tech support couldn’t have been better. I did have to tweak the timing a little bit after the first day, and they walked me through it.
The priming shuttle (or ram as he calls it) caused me a lot of problems. He briefly mentions “no rough edges”. I ended up careful breaking the sharp edges all around the shuttle and smoothing the surfaces in order to ensure smooth operation.

I am a proud owner of this tool. After using mine for 9mm, 45ACP, 357m and 44m since 2019, I just had a look into this video by accident. It misses a lot more information like setting up the proper parts for getting a used shell cleaned up by removing the used primer. There is s tube with the station which guides the used primer into a bucket (or whatever you want to use) to gather them. When using different primers (9mm vs 45ACP) its essential to understand what needs to be done (eyxchanging the primer feeder, replace the inserter from the bottom of the into the station. Setting up the different dies, to operate properly is also not something you with a fingersnip....So the video is only scratching on the surface... There is no way around as he also said in the video: RTFM

Making me crazy to watch the primer slide guide rod flop around throughout the video. If the bottom of the rod isn’t inserted into the spring loaded retainer (seen unused in the base of the press) the slide will not index properly with the primer feed tube. Mostly a good video but with important details like this missing. I love Brownells videos but this one is somewhat incomplete. Do or do not; there is no “try”.

I have a couple of elderly LNL's and I'm curious if this is a new feature or am I missing something? I sure as heck does not look properly right when the bottom end of the wire/traveling-rod just flops in against the underneath of the shellplate shaft?!? Also confusing and think every Horanday Press Model is called Lock and Load.. I think it refers to their unique die holding sustem ..has bushting theat pop into place instead of having to threat them into place.. If you unscrew the dies you have lost some of your adjustments.. I suppose leaving the lock collar in place keeps those settings close. I also assume you need to purcahse more bushings for each die set that you want to use..

So when you order one of these you don't get any dies .. nor do you get the proper size plate to hold the casings is my Impression ..
Also the Lock and Load die adaptors.. It looks to me like you will need three more of them for each set of dies you want to leave in the proper depth setting.. but I am vauge on this not sure about it .. I see some videos saying how great a certain Dillion model is but you have to turn the casing holding plate after every handle stroke .. Seems to me the models that have a plate that rotates with the handle pull will save a lot of time and one manual step .. Thus in the Price range I likde the Hornaday a lot better..

    • @drteknical6571
      @drteknical6571 3 ปีที่แล้ว

No, they don't know which calibers you want to reload. Therefore you will buy your own dies and the required shell-plate to go with them. Most shell-plates serve more than one caliber. Order these items at the same time you purchase your press. That said, this is NOT for first-timers. They need to do everything individually for a while to make sure they understand what is involved in each step. This is critical! Reloading ain't no fun game!! Fuck up just a little and you are indeed fucked!

I wish they would have borrowed Lee's design for the priming system and bullet feeding. With the Lee progressives the primers are just dumped into a priming tray that is then attached to the You don't need to pick up every primer one at a time. The bullet feeder on the Lee is a stand alone setup that allowed the bullet to be fed, seated and crimped all in one station. With the Hornady you have to give up one of your stations which turns a 5 station press into a 4 station press. I use all 5 stations on my press, I don't want to give up one of them for a bullet feeding die. I decap/resize on the first station, prime/flare on the 2nd, powder charge(and continue the flare if needed) on the 3rd, feed/seat/crimp on the the 4th and use a factory crimp die on the 5th. I couldn't do that on the Hornady. If you use a crimp die, which most reloaders do now, you can make almost twice as many rounds on the Lee Loadmaster in the same time since you don't have to pick up each primer or waste a station for bullet feeding.

I believe you should start with a single stage press to learn the basics of reloading, because it will help you in the future. This press is always great to have around when loading rifle ammo, pulling bullets and many other operations, so it’s not a waste. When your ready to move forward with a progressive press purchase a Dillion XL750, it is more money but you will be glad you did. I purchased a Hornady progressive for my second press and have loaded thousands of rounds from 9mm to 44mag and it has served me well. Dillion is just easier to change over, faster to start producing ammo and is just better. Good luck.

Fast forward to the attaching the powder measure, there is a freaking die in the press! From. What i hear about loading your own ammo. You have to go STEP BY STEP! So you only would install the powder measure stop if you purchase a separate caliber specific PTX expander. To keep it simple, if you aren’t running a 3 die set with an expander die, you can purchase the PTX expander that goes inside the powder drop, it just expands the brass while charging it with powder, kind of like 2 functions in just the one station. The powder measure stop, the part he installs, is only used if you have purchased a PTX expander. He doesn’t clarify this at all in the video, so makes it very confusing. If you have an expander die set up in its own station you don’t need to install it. Hope that clears any confusion up

I could never trust my Hornady Lock-N-Load AP Progressive Press to make safe ammo. I got rid of it. It's now Dillon for me.

Blaine Nay - I’m sorry that you were unsuccessful with Hornady’s AP. However, blue koolaid isn’t the cure for everyone. I did a lot of research before buying and went in with my eyes open. I like the way Hornady’s press works for me, and there is a significant cost savings if you load lots of cartridges like I do.

650 is great. 550C is good, but only has manual indexing. However, Hornady does not use those good-looking models as an accessory.

I had this exact same press for years before I bought a Dillon 750, it never produced "unsafe" ammo.
Any press in the world can produce unsafe ammo if you don't d things right though, seems as if you're not very bright.

I just wish that you guys look after your customers and not ignore a legit complaint and every email I sent !!! For a broken brand new cleaning kit that I received and paid top dollar for.

If you need to explain the mounting procedure to someone might want to choose a different hobby

AND he uses the lame-o 5/16" bolt recommendation instead of full 1/2" bolts that are a snug fit in the hole in the base, and utterly prevent the slightest hint of wobble! "Why is the hole 1/2" then?!?"

Camera guy probably did the sound and editing themselves, and it shows. Think it through a little better buddy.
