    You will get a much cleaner casting if you will preheat your graphite mold to a higher temperature (red hot) before pouring the gold. Any great variation between mold and metal temps (even just a slightly cooler mold) will cause cold casting issues in the finished bar. Also best to keep full heat on the poured metal for a longer period to help extend the molten state to allow the metal to fill all of the voids. Not real important for simply casting for scrap, but does produce a much nicer finished bar.

    I'd love to see a break down of the cost for the raw materials (karat gold, chemicals, etc etc ) and labor vs. the value of the bar today.

    • @carlosgarcia3341

      It's all down to how cheap you can get the raw materials (jewelry).

    • @TheSpektralOne
      @TheSpektralOne 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      most of those chemicals are made on industrial scales so can be procured inexpensively

    • @isaacclark9825
      @isaacclark9825 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Most of the chemicals are quite cheap and not hard to buy locally. Only the nitric acid either costs much of anything or is difficult to get. I once asked senior chief why he uses HCL instead of saltwater to precipitate silver, and he said HCL was more convenient. So HCL must not cost much of anything either. You can get some stuff cheap from overseas (urea, sodium metabisulfite) but that may not be worth the trouble.
      I doubt that he used more than a few dollars worth of electricity.
      So it is all about your labor, the price of nitric acid, and how cheaply you can get karat gold.
      To make money, you have to get bargains on the gold. When you buy stuff from folks you have to cover the times when you buy stuff that turns out not to be worthwhile.

    That's a lovely bar! You always say that precipitation is your favourite part, when refining my first bar I found the melting and pouring of the bar to be the most satisfying to me :)
    Also, people might not realize, but that must have been a lot of hard work! Including the recording and and editing of the video, which substantially adds to the time it takes to refine the gold!

    • @sreetips
      @sreetips  4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      That is an understatement. For the viewer it must look easy. But its a Giant pain getting everything ready to shoot and make it happen like you want. I pour 110% into production and editing. It takes a toll on me and I’m an absolute mess for a day or two after I get the video posted. Especially if I’m up till 3 or 4 am. I may appear calm and in control during the video, but I edit out all the cussing and illness when something messes up. Comes with the territory.

    Hi there, awesome video, just a piece of advice, to get a shiny bar, first melt the gold and pour it into a large bucket of water so that the gold will become granulated. Once granulated, put the granules into your mould and then remelt the gold in your mould with your blow torch, the gold will have a shiny surface once it reaches melting point and then let it cool slowly down, it will look like a bullion bar.

    Ohhhh my goodness, you did it! What a beautiful bar of pure gold you end up with! This was an amazing journey, and I had to catch my breath several times, but you pulled it off nicely, sreetips!. As of today, 5/1/22 w/spot gold at $1911.00/OZ,..... 24.6 Troy OZ = $47,010.6 all in that big beautiful bar! Not bad for a day's work! Dealing with that much gold had to be harrowing, but you know what you're doing, and appear to be minimizing the loss at each step. So, you projected a result of 25 Troy ounces, and you realized 24.6 Troy ounces. I'd say that you were very nearly spot on with your calculations and lab techniques, I doubt that anyone could have done a better job than you did, especially when you consider that this was a homespun single man operation. You, good Sir, are setting the bar very high, and are giving us who are considering following in your footsteps, something to shoot for in the long run. Well done, sreetips!

Important tip my good friend, turn your acet and oxygen down or remove, but always turn the acet off first and you won't get any ruff surface. My prentice level of experience, combined with all that come together, I never take the time to process the gold with SMB. If the AR reaction stalls and more potassium nitrate or nitric is added and it doesn't start again, don't beat a dead horse by adding still more potassium nitrate or nitric, instead add more hydrochloric. Jump starting the reaction with extra hydrochloric will enable the already added nitrates to be used up, this does not require using separate beakers, the original is just fine.

    Very gorgeous bar! Congratulations to the buyer.
    I'm used to refine by a slightly differnt procedure: "clorox method" for the second refining (since gold is basically in dust form, it is relatively fast). I know it introduces chemicals, but by heating you can eliminate the oxidant and so an important lower quantity of SMB is required.
    Another thing: I got a furnace like your one. I did an adapter to introduce the mold directly into the furnace (obviously in horizontal position). I've never done a gold bar (just buttons), but silver bars are sistematically mirror finished, even if without ripples. Just need to stop the cooling at 965 Celsius for 30min to reduce oxigen bubbles. And you can weight silver cristal (or gold dust) in advance.

    • @sreetips
      @sreetips  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      “Clorox method” = HCl & bleach? I’d like to see your adapter.

    • @alessandrogaleotti6583
      @alessandrogaleotti6583 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@sreetips Yes, Sodium hypochloride (I use tec grade, not bleach)& HCl. I have to sign off some declarations in my country because this salt can be used for rocketry (with sugar it is a propeller). It reacts vigoursly with HCl, so I often premix it, than small doses if required.
      The adapter I did is refractory concrete (with steel fibers). Long enought to carry my mold, D section with max thick=difference between inner radius and top hole radius and with radius equal to the inner part of the furnace. A simple spring and hook keep the cap closed when the furnace is horizontal (my cap is with hinges on a side, while your cap is free and without hinges, but I believe you can arrange something).
      The mold goes in and out by a thin flat piece of steel... like pizza.
      At my next cook I'drop you some pics.
      Disclaimer: this is not according the furnace specifications and it should not be done.

    • @alessandrogaleotti6583
      @alessandrogaleotti6583 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      PS: the diagonal of the mold (side section) has to be less of the diameter of the top hole of the furnace. If not too much bigger, scrap&round the hedges.

    Absolutely love it being from Western Australia in the south west, I've had the pleasure of basic prospecting and panning for gold in my region near a place called Margaret River. I've got some work to do but I have at least 760 grams of back braking hard work. Taken me a good couple years. But it's a hobby that's going to pay off for me and my family. Everything is surface finds. I'm so lucky to live in such a beautiful rich mineral consented area in my own back yard. But to others make no mistake it's hard work. I've decided with watching your great show that I'm going to process my own bar. I look forward to completing the project then getting back to building up my long journey of simply picking that yellow magic off the ground. I'd love to send you a small gift of some Aussie gold. As I'm great full for your STREET TIPS. It's going to save me in the end so it's only fair. Will be in touch to organise the small gift of Australian AU. THANKS MATE .
    REGARDS
    PATRICK WILSON.

      Patrick, I’ve refined natural gold - Alaskan Placer Gold. I’ve done it several times. It tested about 18k. I got a nice pure gold bar using inquartation, parting with nitric, then refining with Aqua Regia

      @@sreetips thankyou yes you are correct natural gold from the ground range's in its purity. There is a difference but 20k on average for the region. I know in my heart I won't get 99.9% refining but I believe I definitely should have 22k end product. I also have collected approximately 14 kg of sterling silver big shame on its current price. I seem to find silver a lot easier to refine. Regardless of the price I'm still going to refine it into bars. I love silver it's such a beautiful metal but for me gold is magic not only because if it's value. Also for it's beauty, it's potential uses but mainly it's history throughout mankind. Again great show. As an Australian you have my word on sending some gold to you from the South West of Australia. Yes also Gold from Alaska it's amazing there seems to be a endless supply of Alaskan gold. So amazing. Your lasted 25 Troy once bar absolutely had blown me away. You explain your methods clearly and easily to understand. I remember when you got started. You have grown an amazing program. Definitely love the New York accent. Please correct me for my arrogance if I'm wrong on your accent. An amazing program and amazing individual. The best refining program out there. STREET TIPS 100%.
      Thankyou Patrick Wilson.

      I'd like to ask a question if may sir. I hope it doesn't sound to behind the 8 ball so to speak. Silver forms a crystal structure during its refining process as I've watched in the past. Does gold also have a similar structure??. Thanks again for your time. I'm Under you would be a very busy individual. But your ability to answer your subscribers is a great attribute.

    I seen in a video showing commercial gold refining. After they do the aqua regia treatment to get the gold into the sand. They pour it into a wetter barrel to create the little droplets. They then fill the mold with the droplets and heat it in the mold inside an oven. It produced a very nice surface finish on the bars doing it that way. You may want to check it out!

      I’ve seen that video. Those bars look good. But I prefer the bright reflective surface and the beautiful pour lines that I can achieve by pouring it by hand. Looks like a pebble thrown onto a mill pond.
