    When I was studying Psychology in my undergraduate days, it was always presented to me that it's not really that they have completely different person inside of you that can interact with each other. It's more that someone with Dissociative Identity Disorder creates a different identity usually as a coping mechanism when dealing with extreme trauma from the past like child abuse etc. Think of it as an extreme version of escapism people mentally do when they read or watch fiction to get away from real world problems, This is why Hulk deals with Dissociative Identity Disorder a bit better as a metaphor since it was shown that the "HULK" was always a part of Bruce Banner when he was abused by his father even before the gamma bomb. It's not a completely different person inside of you but a part of you trying to deal with a situation. Bruce Banner just suppressed his anger until the gamma bomb made it manifest into a physical form

    • @ComicTropes
      @ComicTropes  7 ปีที่แล้ว +29

      Mario U Yes, I understand the real world interpretation of DID but there seems to be room in the comic for Legion to have absorbed a separate psyche. But maybe not. It's not 100% clear.

      What good would Cypher be in a fighting group like the X-Men? He can understand any language, that's his power right? There's no reason to have him travel with the group. Yes, his skill might be useful sometimes, but rarely in a fight (other than to maybe avoid one because miscommunication based on language barrier). You might as well leave him back at the Mansion and just communicate by radio if his skills were needed.

    Your comments on Cypher's abilities struck a chord with me, I totally would have also been excited by the ability to learn any language immediately. You mentioned going into a random restaurant somewhere in Japan or Russia and just talking with someone. That's something I would also love to be able to do as easily as Cypher could have.
    I can speak one foreign language, Chinese, at least conversationally. The ability to speak to random people who were raised in a vastly different culture than my own is absolutely exciting. Judging from your videos, it seems like you spent some time in Japan. Did you ever learn much of the language, and if so, did you fulfill that dream of talking to a random stranger in a restaurant?

    Well done on distinguishing between DID and schizophrenia.
    These were also some of my first books, and only now do I realize how good they are.

    • @Cythil
      @Cythil 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Actually got Schizophrenia wrong. What is the core to Schizophrenia is that someone that suffer it has a hard time distinguishing and understanding reality. Like hearing voices or having other forms of hallucinations and delusion. The mind is not fractured per say. But the disorder often connected with other disorders like depression and mood swings so I can see how that idea might have started to circulate. It is not hard to see how someone suffering form sever Schizophrenia might be confused with a person that have other disorders ether like DID even if these are seen a very separate things. For many having voices that tell you things and having a other personality may seem very much alike after all.
      However, these terms are often used interchangeably which I think ComicTropes did very well to explain that there absolutely not. Mental disorders are complex and sometimes the terms change as we get a better understanding on how to categorize these disorders. Sadly these disorders are not often accurately portrait in media. I can only think of two times that Schizophrenia have been done somewhat well in popular media my self.
      I also think is important to know that there are people that have Schizophrenia that can function in society. And it tend to be more people that suffer Schizophrenia on the receiving end of violent crime then the other way around. A bit off topic but I still think it worth stating due to the stigma.

    One of the things I liked about Karma was that she actually spoke English with a French accent, and used French terms and phrases, instead of Vietnamese, because she learned English in French. It was a good way to reference the colonial history of Vietnam (and, from a writing perspective, probably made it a lot easier for a white comic author in 1985 to write than Vietnamese), especially since Karma's backstory is inextricably linked to the Vietnam War and the plight of Vietnamese refugees in post-war America.

    I know you probably won't read this, but I was re-watching this video after watching Legion . Three things come to mind: 1) God, this art is great and it really stands out as the only Marvel thing of that era which rivals what would happen with Vertigo. 2) I'd kinda like you to do a video about the Age of Apocalypse comics, where my generation learned about Legion. Though, I know i'ts probably algorithm poison. 3) Even more of a moon shot pitch: it'd be fun to see you do a retrospective on Uncanny X-Men #303, which I swear I used to have 8 copies of because they over-printed it and packaged it with every piece of X-Men merch when I was a kid. It introduced a lot of us youngins to Magik and is such a weird, lovely, melodramatic, soap-opera, failed cash-grab of a comic from that strange time in comics. Oddly, mint is now going for like $30. Again, algorithm suicide, but a good comics history story. PS4) You're the best at what you do. Thanks!

    The Chris Claremont run of X-Men: Wolverine could not be in a fight without referencing his adamantium claws. Never thought about it as a kid, it bugged me as an adult, but now I realize that maybe it was an editorial commandment from on high that forced Claremont to write like that.

    Loved Cypher. Grossly under utilized character back in the day. They let him do cool things occasionally; as memory serves he once figured out Magus's DNA and "hacked" it for instance. A writer with a stronger STEM background could have a field day with the character.

    If I'm completely honest, I didn't like Sienkiewicz's art back in the 80s. I just didn't get it. My friends and I called him the "blocky" guy on New Mutants. These days I'm absolutely mystified that Marvel wasn't throwing stacks of cash at him to keep him drawing every comic they could. He did New Mutants, and Moon Knight, and Elektra: Assassin, but beyond that there really isn't much penciling on his resume. He did much more inking. Maybe he just didn't want to pencil all that much, but I wish he would. He's amazing.

    Cypher was a man ahead of his time. He would be a lot more useful now than in the past. Hell... this ability would allow him to decipher the codes behind serial killer messages or mysterious computer programming. He could even come up with a super difficult hard code to disguise your secrets. He is basically the Michelangelo teenage ninja turtle character in of the team coming up with gadgets and figuring out puzzles.

    Douglock was a character combining the New Mutants Warlock and Cyphers cadaver that appeared in one ongoing New Mutants issue and a miniseries,that I know of. Warlock not understanding the funeral and burial process, dug up the cadaver of Cypher and walked around pretending *himself;friend* could live again. The miniseries was a 3 issue arc, where Warlock somehow lives again but resembles Cypher.

    Absinthe should not make you hallucinate. Also, you should use an absinthe glass, put the absinthe spoon over it, place a sugar cube on the spoon, pour the absinthe over the sugar cube into the glass, the set the sugar cube on fire, then add a few drops of water and stir the dissolving sugar cube into the mix of water and absinthe. You should drink it correctly for the best flavor. Side note: many people that hallucinated on this did so because they were either really drunk (see also - pink elephants) or they hallucinated because it was mixed with something like fermeldahide. During temperance and prohibition... Barkeeps would water down their alcohol or "cut it". This helped them to save money by giving watered down liquor and made them extra profit by rationing the reserve. Embalming fluid was one way they watered down the booze. It's toxic, so it would give the drinker similar feelings of being drunk, as they imbibed more they would hallucinate, and if they drank too much it would kill them. There are a series of tunnels underneath a North West American city where a group of men found few barrels of booze. Since no one was looking they started drinking it. In the morning they were all found dead. The barrels were filled with fermeldahide and in a section of the underground that was being used as storage for the mortuary right above.

    Xavier got his body cloned by the time the new mutants series started, around issue 6 and when he came back from secrets wars he could walk normally. By the time he left to space he was still walking, so during the new mutants run most of the time Xavier could walk, as for magneto the idea of those pages was to show how he was turning into a good buy who would eventually became the new headmaster so it makes total sense to have them. Cypher is back and he is amazing. I love Doug he was this sort of geek boy between gods.

    I have just started reading The (original) New Mutants series, from the start. I'm up to #4. I like it a lot! Which surprises me a little, as I would have thought, before reading, that it was too "immature", being that's it's concerned with teens and pre-teens.
    So far, I have to award it one of the highest accolades I own, as say: it's a LOT like the original Claremont X-Men run; it had mysteries and twists and turns every installment; and the soap-opera, inter-personal relationships between the characters is very sweet and nice.
    Cheers Chris,

    The Freedom Force game duology (because they killed the series before releasing the third game, thus ending the series on a setup for what I'd assume would be a an "Event" type finale) also throws some friendly jab at the accents, one of their main characters is basically a magical version of Jean Grey (that later gets her very own Dark Phoenix storyline) and they give her Storm's catchphrase but with a southern accent.

    30:23 maybe, after a while of David using this wristband, they should have revealed that it was actually useless, and that because they were just simply giving David some support at all, gave him what he thought he needed to be in control of his seemingly unlimited powers.

    Super talented guy Bill Sienkiewicz is. I've grown to really like Guido Carosella's white troll hair, though I once thought it looked stupid. But I've kinda never understood what Legion's hair is supposed to be. I still think Claremont whatever his Bill Shooter-enforced habits may be, is more intuitive and thoughtful about his and other characters than other writers. Today a lot of them are written out of character, but Chris knows all the characters inside and out.

    When I discovered Blevins, I didn't appreciate his art as I do now, neither. I was still rather young (even if we were 2 years late , in France, on the American edition at that time) ... since , I realised how his landscapes are incredible and I talked with him via emails and on Facebook, and he is such a kind person...

    Claremont's having characters describe the action that was happening with dialogue was always hilarious to me. Even though I do really like his work, the hokiness of that aspect of it I find adorable. Chris theorizes here that Claremont just didn't trust his artists, but didn't they still do it "Marvel style" at that time, with the artists drawing from a rough plot with final dialogue written afterwards to fit the available space? Even if I'm wrong about that, he was often working with top-of-the-line artists like Jim Lee, and you should really be able count on guys like that to sell the action visually.

      In fact Claremont is known among artists for the exasperatingly detailed descriptions of the panels in his scripts, descriptions in which he sometimes indicated even the percentage of the panel that each element of the image should occupy. His working method is the exact opposite of the Marvel method.

      I think he still has great plot ideas and characterizations but it could be argued that the style has dated. I still like the 80s stuff a lot.

    I gotta admit. Bill Sienkiewicz's artwork put me off at first. I guess because it WAS such a departure from Marvel's "House Style" as it were. Later, I developed a deeper appreciation for it. So there it is. Confession is good for the body and soul.

    The show legion is about ten time better than any other super hero movie, or show out there. All the other stuff, you have to be fan to enjoy it. Legion is a show that is actually good on it's own merits. Eventually, this comic book stuff will become old, and than die, but legion is so good, it will out live the genera.

    I am from Alabama and I love their over the top Southern accents. Even when they obviously are doing it wrong. I can recognize they are trying to come up with an abstract spelling to help bring out the accent better in scripture for the reader. "Am so sorry." I have seen this phrase before. It's not the correct Southern way. But I know why they do this. We love saying word combinations. (I'm, we've, they're, couldn't and etc.) It's to a point we take them too far. (Would've'nt) haha. The writer is referencing this bad habit that results in a unique sounds of words.
    Hell, I didn't even realize the word "bonfire" was even spelled this way. I thought it was spelled barn fire. Why? Because everyone in my area always pronounced it this way and it actually sounds more connected together having the, "a r n." Haha. Well, at least to the people where I live that is. That tells you how dramatic how Southerns can cause create unique sounds for words. This is why the writers uses abstraction in the typography. You would not hear them in normal correct spelling. You have to play with abstract spelling to figure out the right combination of letters and words that help bring out the dialect. It's not an easy task I tell you. I guarantee you even Southerners will have a hard time doing the same thing these guys are trying. This is why I forgive them and love them for doing it.
    (p.s. I am pretty sure we aren't the only part of the country or world that takes the word combinations too far as well in English. I bet you money other places like in New York or any where else a person might have said, "wouldn't've,' or any other over the type combination too. The difference is the frequency of how much people do it, and what type of certain words. I am not sure where we rank in the grand scheme of things in English speakers of how much we do this compared to others. What ever it is it's still worth noting.)

    Bill Sienkiewicz was my first introduction into my New Mutants LOVE with issue #18. His comparatively short run remains my absolute favorite NM run to this day. Shooter's edict was silly, understable, but silly and Claremont just made it ridiculous.
