Yeah. Pretty weird. I guess he just knew Daredevil could read it with his super sensitive touch powers. But there's no way he could realistically have known he had those powers.
If Spider-Man would have been giving it that much thought, he could also have used a pointy stick (tool, fork, etc.) instead of an actual pen to write the letter, so that anyone but Daredevil would have seen just a blank piece of paper. But it's really not worth thinking about it, considering how badly written those stories were.
I like that Karen and Foggy can live in a world where men can climb up high rises like they're strolling down the road or pick up cars and toss them or smash through concrete walls... but a blind superhero? That's just too much, man.
There was another storyline in the comics where Matt faked his death and started calling himself Jack Batlin because his dad Jack Murdock's nickname as a boxer was Battlin Jack Murdock.
This is why I love these older gold and silver age comics. They’re not as sophisticated and usually not as gripping, but they’re just very fun and kind if charming in their silliness. It feels much more innocent.
I absolutely find that hilarious. It's not even just when he's Matt pretending to be Matt pretending to be Daredevil. Later, fully as Matt Daredevil, he's still wearing the glasses under the mask
My dad collected Marvel comics in the mid to late 60s, so I grew up reading his stash. These issues of “Daredevil” were among my favourites as a kid. I loved the whole conceit of Mike Murdock. I loved his goofy sunglasses, I loved his corny slang, and it was like nothing else in any other comic book. What other superhero had two secret identities? Incidentally, I still have a lot of my dad’s comics. Because he kept them in a paper grocery bag in the attic, they’re in terrible shape. Most have lost their covers (many of which are tacked to the wall of my office) and all of them are falling to pieces. I don’t care. Those comics are more precious than gold to me!
I was a teenager. I hung on to this story arc like a soap opera fanatic. The one inconsistentcy that struck me was that a Daredevil uniform fitted to Foggy would've hung like a feed sack on Matt. I considered the 3 issue Hyde-&-Cobra story an epic...the equal of the earlier 3 issue series with Kazar, back in the John Romita era.
It’s funny how Matt actually considers proposing to Karen under the fake identity. That seems like a pretty impossible thing to get out of; how do you get a marriage certificate as a guy who doesn’t exist? How would he explain Matt not being at his “brother”s wedding?
Mike Murdock recently returned to the Daredevil series; comic book shenanigans have given him his own body, so now Matt really does have a twin brother!
and then by ish #57, Matt reveals to Karen that he IS alive (after previously faking his death) and that he IS Daredevil. Karen's going to need a psychiatrist.
When I was first getting into Marvel stuff through the Essential volumes, Silver Age "Daredevil" was among my favorite discoveries. It reminded me a lot of the style of Archie comics: static yet likable characters placed into a series of stock situations and plot types. I knew, or at least could reasonably guess, what I was going to get, but the execution was so darn spot-on that it was more than worth the time and money investment on my part. You're right; there is no good reason for Matt Murdock to impersonate a "twin brother" in order to throw his coworkers off his trail, never mind the likelihood that they don't even care about Daredevil's secret identity anyway. Even then, it's fairly compelling and generates quite a deal of drama, comedy, and pathos. I really enjoy the way a third-teir Marvel book could run with something so goofy for so long, dispose of it in suitably sly fashion, and yet be stylishly executed throughout. It works on a base level, and that's more than enough for me. I kinda wish more comics these days could adopt a "darn the torpedoes, see what sticks" approach; maybe it would bring more people in to wonder what's going on here.
Speaking of which, I just realized that Daredevil's relationship dynamics are remarkably similar to Thor's Silver Age incarnation, albeit with one extra guy (Foggy) and no familial pantheon subplots. Both books dealt quite extensively with "guest" villains from other Marvel titles (a trend I've noticed with other titles, but it's practically a way of life for Thor and DD); I wonder if this was a side-effect of the "Marvel Method," letting the artists experiment with journeyman-type threats and find interesting takes that might work well in the flagship books (FF, Spidey, etc.).
Clay3613 on the opposite side of that picture you’ll see Cap has just been sliced through by some villain, that’s how his chest and shoulder can both be facing the same direction!
Love the "Interactive " Daredevil 🤣🤣 You sir are pretty talented. This channel is Gold for a longtime comicbook nerd like me.....Longtime enough to remember some of these books in my Uncles stash....These were horrible, but his team ups with Black Widow were cool back then.
Chris, Your retelling of these comics is totally brilliant and hilarious good fun. Wishing you big success in the future: you have a knack for sleuthing out great, fresh ideas for episodes. Thank you!
I know everybody here probably know this, but Colan famously didn't read scripts or ideas ahead, he just drew in his dramatic style and usually ran out of pages, and the last pages's panels would just get smaller and smaller, so that's one possible explanation for that tiny cliffhanger. As for the arc itself, 1) I first read of it and thought it didn't make sense, then read it and thought it made even less sense. 2) I litterally just read it and I can't even remember all the insane nook and crannies it went through.
So the people at the law office open someone else's mail which is illegal. Also, Spider-Man wrote a letter revealing the secret identity of a blind man, to a blind man? Was he expecting Matt to read the letter?
Love your channel! Came across it three days ago. Your videos are of high quality , hope you'll get many more Subscribers and views in the future! Greetings from Germany, Keep it up :)
HahA! Cool vid, Chris. I like how at 15:30, when they remove Daredevil's mask, Murdock is still wearing his sunglasses underneath the mask. You can't write stuff like this anymore and expect to sell a monthly title. Stan Lee had quite the imagination but he wrote for a simpler era. Thanks for posting!
This is actually the first time I've seen the comics panels about Mike, so thank you. But the first time I ever heard about it was in a kids' magazine called 'Dynamite', which had a feature about Daredevil (huge surprise, since it was a Marvel publication). I have to admit, it sounded a lot cleverer in the sketch description than it came out on these pages. I was reminded of Peter David twice over here. Once, because in Hulk and other books he loved to revisit past goofiness, and had one character question another and basically ask 'Why Would You Even Do That?' while pointing out all the flaws in the past plot. The best part is, the characters were stuck with it: There was no modern assertion of why it made sense, unless the logic flow was perfect. One I always remember is Rick Jones accidentally revealing to Betty that Bruce once used a Gamma-ray device to switch back and forth, and she was livid. The second time was that his stories were the only ones circa Civil War to really explore potential positives from Peter's unmasking. Now, a handful of characters may forever keep the secret ID thing going. But storylines like 'Mike Murdock' show why it is not a trope of choice anymore. You know, I'm going to suggest the Civil War Spider-Man unmasking side stories for one of your article-videos. I consider it a great missed opportunity.
I think Daredevil didn't really shine until Frank Miller became both artist and writer. Nobody really seemed to know what to do with him in the early days.
I think Frank Miller completely redefined Daredevil. But the team-up years with Black Widow in San Francisco through the 70s were also popular at the time.
5:34 Lol! The funniest moment of the funniest episode about the funniest story Stan Lee wrote. Lee was a great frontman for Marvel, but his writing could be ridiculous. Superhero comics were obsessed with secret identities but then they were largely created by a secretive minority.
3:19 HAHA Chris's face is just utter horror i love it 😂😂🤣🤣 i laughed my ass off out loud and woke up half my house lmao i love that chris doesnt even acknowledge what that means and he just has this look of horror almost as if to say "please dont talk about it lets just move on..." LOL so funny
Daredevil Goes to extreme lengths to preserve his identity half of the time in the silver age. I recently read a silver age Daredevil story(something about El Condor) where Matt and Foggy go to South America to help this politician out. Guy gets kidnapped, Matt finds some clues, Matt knocks the living hell out of Foggy with an unnecessarily hard Karate chop from behind in the dark. He could’ve just used a single nerve pinch. To make it worst, Matt just leaves him there. He did this all just to change into Daredevil. Goddamn.
12:29 "...Alec Guinness Chris, Alec Guinness!!..." LMAO this episode is absolutely hilarious. Sometimes Chris genuinely makes me full blown belly laugh so hard, which is impressive to me because i never really laugh at movies/tv/comedies, they can be funny but i rarely belly laugh, but Chris got me good this episode lol
It's not red lenses. It's literally the continuation of the red leather over his eyes from his mask. I read the comics of a character describing the mask. That was literally the description. They only make it red lenses in film because the actor has to see while doing his performance.
It's intresting that matt never thought to say i'm blind i can't do the acrobatic moves of daredevil. Someone pretending to be spider-man wrote it and it's pure nonsense. That probably would have worked.
Shouting-out a friend on TH-cam is cool... Posting a _link_ to said friend's channel would be even cooler! ;-) Had a few issues trying to find The Comic Book Writer with a simple TH-cam search.
Maybe Chris-cross hates it when Chat Brats like me suggest video topics. Who knows? But here's one, anyway: the rampant Social Incest that comics characters rabidly engage in every chance they get. Be it at their favorite store, school or job, they can't seem to keep their hands off anyone they see most every day, and it really looks stupid when you view the big picture of comics history. Of course I got this notion when Chris brought up how both Matt and Foggy were crushing on the same girl - their office mate. Geez, is there ANY small group of lazy people that WON'T grab after the nearest cheap and insincere romantic opportunity? Apparently not!
Of course, the real funny part is Daredevil wearing his sunglasses under his mask and the sunglasses not being visible under the mask. And wait, Mike Murdock was supposed to have been so completely obliterated there's nothing less but tattered costume?? Wow!
I think the author of the last DD run watched the video. There was an arc where an inhuman called the reader (he can make things he reads) made Mike real.
Why would Spider Man send a letter to a blind guy, how was he supposed to read it?
Yeah. Pretty weird. I guess he just knew Daredevil could read it with his super sensitive touch powers. But there's no way he could realistically have known he had those powers.
When Spider-Man (Spiderman) wrote the letter he applied a lot pressure on the pencil so that it embossed the paper.
Nate Currie in one story it said that Daredevils senses are so strong he can feel print ink
But then again I haven’t actually read any daredevil
Braille but Spiderman didn't how that was a thing?
I like that Karen and Foggy can live in a world where men can climb up high rises like they're strolling down the road or pick up cars and toss them or smash through concrete walls... but a blind superhero? That's just too much, man.
I can believe a lot of stuff, but there’s just no way a blind guy could be a superhero.
A blind superhero? Come on, next you're gonna tell me that Bruce Wayne is Batman.
@@ianfinrir8724Now you’re just being ridiculous. That fancy boy with all the money? No way he’s running around at night as a vigilante.
This is briefly referenced in the Netflix series. At one point Matt uses the name "Mike" when he doesn't want to tell them his real name.
Ironically Foggy and Karen are more blind than Matt Murdock:p
Get out. Now.
I think it's funny that they take off Matt's Daredevil mask and he's wearing his glasses underneath!
Sounds painful, right?
I absolutely find that hilarious. It's not even just when he's Matt pretending to be Matt pretending to be Daredevil. Later, fully as Matt Daredevil, he's still wearing the glasses under the mask
"I'll play it by ear..." Of course you will, Matt; you're blind.

Remember the Death of Jean DeWolff story written 20 years after this where Daredevil TELLS Spider-Man his secret identity and Spidey is SURPRISED.
The Villain Formerly Known As Paste-Pot Pete
Give them credit: the fact that Daredevil got away with this for almost two years has got to mean something....
Don't go to Nelson & Murdock, LP, they are strange over there . . . .
I lost it when Matt/Mike randomly recommends a vacation to Canada.
"I'll play it by ear for a while"
Well you're not gonna play it by eye, are ya?
11:51 "Of course I know him...
He's me!"
Peter Parker, a highly intelligent man, thinks that lawyers open their own mail at law offices, little less blind lawyers.
It’s like the clone saga but with just one guy
Just watched this! Extremely hilarious! Nice job, Chris!
and then by ish #57, Matt reveals to Karen that he IS alive (after previously faking his death) and that he IS Daredevil. Karen's going to need a psychiatrist.
I did not expect this episode to be so funny. Hilarious
The face after you said fap made me laugh out loud every time I rewatched it.
Pure comedy gold

Benjamin Kellog Yeah, early Marvel did a great job at making their characters relatable with problems and also likable.
Speaking of which, I just realized that Daredevil's relationship dynamics are remarkably similar to Thor's Silver Age incarnation, albeit with one extra guy (Foggy) and no familial pantheon subplots. DUDE!!!! Please take down that Liefeld Captain America............I feel it mocking me.
You may not like it, but that's what peak masculinity looks like.
Clay3613 on the opposite side of that picture you’ll see Cap has just been sliced through by some villain, that’s how his chest and shoulder can both be facing the same direction!
That’s America’s Ass, how dare you

Chris, Your retelling of these comics is totally brilliant and hilarious good fun. Wishing you big success in the future: you have a knack for sleuthing out great, fresh ideas for episodes. Thank you!
Ohh cool Chris I didn't know you have a twin brother who likes to dress up as Daredevil.
I know everybody here probably know this, but Colan famously didn't read scripts or ideas ahead, he just drew in his dramatic style and usually ran out of pages, and the last pages's panels would just get smaller and smaller, so that's one possible explanation for that tiny cliffhanger.

Did Matt have multiple personality disorder in the 60’s?
HahA! Cool vid, Chris. I like how at 15:30, when they remove Daredevil's mask, Murdock is still wearing his sunglasses underneath the mask. Man, do I love Gene Colon's artwork. One of the best.
"Go eat a shoe filled with turds!"...?? WTF?
I think Daredevil didn't really shine until Frank Miller became both artist and writer. Nobody really seemed to know what to do with him in the early days.
I think Frank Miller completely redefined Daredevil. But the team-up years with Black Widow in San Francisco through the 70s were also popular at the time.
I literally just read that run this morning. Thanks to the Epic collection.
5:34 Lol! The funniest moment of the funniest episode about the funniest story Stan Lee wrote.

this era with the mew intro i feel like the comedy went up a lot I’m loving it
3:19 HAHA Chris's face is just utter horror i love it 😂😂🤣🤣 i laughed my ass off out loud and woke up half my house lmao i love that chris doesnt even acknowledge what that means and he just has this look of horror almost as if to say "please dont talk about it lets just move on..." LOL so funny

Man, that thumbnail predicted Daredevil Season 3.
now he's his Actual Brother! loving zdarsky's run so much
12:29 "...Alec Guinness Chris, Alec Guinness!!..." LMAO this episode is absolutely hilarious. Sometimes Chris genuinely makes me full blown belly laugh so hard, which is impressive to me because i never really laugh at movies/tv/comedies, they can be funny but i rarely belly laugh, but Chris got me good this episode lol
Interestingly enough...Charles Soule has brought back Mike Murdock in his current Daredevil run.
You make me crack up so hard some times
So this is where Mike came from, and marvel felt the need to bring this back
I love that Mike Murdock actually now exists (existed) in modern Daredevil Comics that Zdarsky wrote.
My god hes back in daredevil 606
The bass work in that title sequence intro music you have is pretty skilled.
HES BACK, Charles Soule just revived him
Little did you know when putting this together that Mike Murdock would again become a major storyline in Daredevil. . .
I want a film adaptation of this arc... told in the style of the recent Joker.
Peter Parker was a college kid. I guess he didn't know law firms tend to open your mail and save the envelope . . . .
One could almost think those stories were written for kids ^^
i love how daredevil makes a cameo in this video & he sounds like joe pesci
I think I now know why Gene Colan was picked to draw Howard the Duck
I've recently been reading those early Daredevils, but I haven't gotten to the end of the Mike Murdock subplot yet. Something to look forward to! ;-)
man the plot sounds like something out of a sitcom or parody
It's not red lenses. It's literally the continuation of the red leather over his eyes from his mask. I read the comics of a character describing the mask. That was literally the description. They only make it red lenses in film because the actor has to see while doing his performance.
yo dope drawing at the end -- upload more of your work
Who knew Daredevil was such a jerk? Good on you for not being starstruck.
He twists and turn like a twisty turny thing!
Only in the Skunk Ape show heckling comic gets you heckled back by the comic.
It's intresting that matt never thought to say i'm blind i can't do the acrobatic moves of daredevil. Someone pretending to be spider-man wrote it and it's pure nonsense. That probably would have worked.
I love how Matt Murdock does a rather "Doctor Who" thing (see the episode "Blink")!
"Spider man concludes that would be impossible for a blind man or a lady to be Daredevil"
Elektra: Am I a joke to you?
I'd like to mention that Mike & Matt are never seen by Karen & Foggy together, as well as Mike eventually ends up blind
This is also referenced during ed brubakers run when matt is taking a plane and uses the name mike murdock to keep his identity a secret
I was expecting Mr Roper or Mr Ferley to walk in by the end.
Shouting-out a friend on TH-cam is cool... Posting a _link_ to said friend's channel would be even cooler! ;-) Had a few issues trying to find The Comic Book Writer with a simple TH-cam search.
Good point. He doesn’t have a vanity url but I did put the link in the episode description.
Spider-man #16! I have the original issue by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko! It was such good fun! Lee may not makes sense but he is entertaining!
If not for plot holes, there’d be no plot at all.
Maybe Chris-cross hates it when Chat Brats like me suggest video topics. Who knows? But here's one, anyway: the rampant Social Incest that comics characters rabidly engage in every chance they get. 3:20- The sax starts playing.
I love that Mike is actually real now
Sucks that Paste Pot Pete isnt in the MCEU...
13:00 classic Stan 😂😂😂
THIS COMIC IS MADNESS
Well, he *IS* a lawyer. They're master liars.
Spider-Man also WROTE a note for a blind man.
Of course, the real funny part is Daredevil wearing his sunglasses under his mask and the sunglasses not being visible under the mask.
And wait, Mike Murdock was supposed to have been so completely obliterated there's nothing less but tattered costume?? Wow!
Holy shit, Canada? Now that's a destination!
Worst part is that now Mike Murdock is a canon character separate from Daredevil thanks to some Inhuman with bending-reality powers.
HE'S UP THERE WITH ALEC GUINNESS, CHRIS! ALEC GUINNESS!!!
"shoe filled with turds" LOL
okay, this video was worth it just or the phrase "oopsy-doopsy"!
Joe spiderman that would be a interesting name for a spider-man Comic .
Joe Spiderman 😂
I think the author of the last DD run watched the video. There was an arc where an inhuman called the reader (he can make things he reads) made Mike real.
lol! Thanks for the laughs!
Didn't this character return?
I love this!
Mike proposes... they go on a trip to Canada
What about now that the twin is a real person?
This whole idea was just ridiculous.
"FAPPP!!! best sound effect ever
It actually went somewhere in the recent run haha
