I'm old school roofer late 60's to 90's.. one thing we use to do is as you go around any flashing we cut the top corner of the single closest to the pipe at a 45° angle which made any water divert toward the pipe...lol..it's cool that you were teaching how to roof using Presidential Shingle (one of the more difficult shingles to lay if you don't know how they are done) good job laying them

Appreciate the video. At 14:13, that little 1.5" sliver has no nails holding it from my observation. Installer rightfully avoided nailing there, but should put some cement at least. Just did a roof like this and it's difficult to install - one absolutely must follow installation instructions to keep the diagonal pattern. Thank you for posting these! Really enjoy watching here in Seattle.

For real my dad took me to work on roof when I was 12 and this stuff is freaking hard I was taking up shingles form like 30 feet ladders my dad is getting old and he needed a helper so he took me but I hope he doesn't leave me the company cause this stuff is real work

Wow nice detailing. I did one of those presidential roofs but it was over 37 years ago. Or another brand just like it. I don't recall any specialty starter for it. We had to cut through the tabs for our first course. Then we had to cut a wood stove metal chimney through it. It was like a ham sandwich a full inch thick! I'm glad I never got asked to do one since.

This is hard work. I work with my husband he's a roofer im a contractor/worker my respects to all of you risking your lives,and carrying them 50lb bags of shingles up the ladder god knows how many feet up sometimes,not to mention this atrocious heat in summer ugh....

Shingles arent that bad we usually help each other with them or get the machine to put em up what sucks more tho is when we have to carry the hundred pound roll up the ladder lol im 19 btw and work as a roofer
Bartley here in the states we want things done now, meaning as fast as possible. What youre talking about is too big and pointless a safety precaution for such a small job, which probably happens tens of thousands of times daily across this country. And If you needed scaffolding around a 1 story 3-5/12 roof, you shouldnt be a roofer in the first place.

People talk about roofing being a shitty job with little pay. But when you think about it this world needs roofers just like we need Janitors, cashiers, teachers, construction works Ect. Even though it's not the ideal job for many someone has to do it.

Worked my first job and moreover as a roofer today, old old roof wooden we had to use a pitch fork to rip it off and roll the old rotted delicate roof off almost half of this huge house and have to go back tomorrow. Hardest job I've ever done and only worked for about 5-6 hours and i am exhausted

Always have and always will have "balls". I guarantee!! I have done shit on a roof that just by watching me lay down shingles would make your "balls" retreat back up and then it would take for you to do something spectacular, before your balls would descend again. LOCAL 26!!

Good video but when installing the starters I never shoot the starter through the drip edge. One leak you have 5 ft of soffit rotting. Other than that, very thorough and great information. 10 years roofing experience

Great video. This guy knows his business. I've done a lot of roofs. It's the hottest, hardest construction there is. And I never had an air nailer. Very dumb!
OSHA inspector is about safety rules !! How he would know about roofing .?.
It may sound weird at first, but osha does have many guidelines while roofs are being inspected.
But I think it was more a personal experience in inspecting roofs. Maybe an inspector has seen that technic be used around that effectively works greats. But yeah, I was hesitant at first to.
Agree, Osha is for employees safety purposes only . Never listen to an osha inspector regarding installation methods. They have no jurisdiction over installation methods, only safety.

yes please no. watch a couple videos from Owens corning, Gaf, certain teed, IKO, etc. they may have rather vague videos but at least you will be learning proper method. i don't care if this is sunny california, TF is the point of a roof if it can't protect you from the 1 time you get heavy rainfall.

You guys talking about his you used to be roofers and got out of roofing ,talking about you made the right choice to leave the trade ,how sure are that you made the right choice financially? I worked as a commercial roofer/waterproofer as a union for 32 yrs ,22 years as a senior foreman of a 30 to 60 man crew ,my hourly wage without the $11.78 an hour paid to my health insurance ,and without the $9.75 an hour vacation pay included with my hourly pay I was making $48 an hour and working 40 to 70 hours a week year round ,once a year our union would tally up our working hours & cut us a check at $9.75 for every hour worked ,my vacation pay was roughly $25,000 a year every July, we were also paid " Travel pay " where the farther from home we worked the more tax free living expenses we were paid ,my travel pay for living in Detroit & working in NYC was just over $1,000 a week ,also all senior foreman are allowed to keep ALL salvage metals like copper, extruded aluminum, brass etc ,some jobs I would collect $25,000 in salvaged copper alone ,all foreman are given Wright Express gas cards to keep their truck ,Skytrak and cranes filled with fuel ,all foreman are given company work trucks ,off of 1 Ford Motors job we did that was 9,200 sq we took back over $150,000 in #2 copper ,brass and extruded aluminum, I split it with my right hand man and my Top 5 journeyman so all my best journeyman could all buy brand new Ford F-150 work trucks .
I'm retired now & have been for over 5 years ,my union pension is $5,700 a month & I retired early ,friends of mine who worked until 60 are collecting over $8,000 a month in pensions ,we also receive a $10,000 life insurance policy and our pensions go to our wives should we did 1st ,my next door neighbor is a doctor and his house sits on 3 acres while I have 22.5 acres ,my home is as nice as my doctor neighbor and my furnishings are mixes than the doctor ,when I retired I went and spent $1.2 million dollars on high end home theater and hifi equipment and paid CASH money ,so are you guys who quit roofing because you didn't dig working with 550 degree hot tar ,or banging shingles making $150,000 before $25,000 vacation pay ,another $20 grand in scrap copper ,labor saving bonuses for bringing the job in ahead of schedule ,plus awesome X-mas bonuses where journeyman get $10k ,foreman get $25k and superintendents get well over $100,000 ,are you still thinking you made the right choice to leave roofing for a job sitting behind a computer sucking up air conditioning and becomming soft ?
As a journeyman roofer I mastered all types of sloped and flat roofing ,I mastered rough carpentry ,I mastered Architectural Sheet Metal, I mastered light iron work and welding ,I mastered heavy equipment like Skytrak ,Cranes and Manitou Telehandler Crane/lifts ,I mastered all coatings as well as below grade waterproofing ,all which made me able to find a $100,000 a year job as a journeyman within 2 weeks ,my wife is a retired PHD professor from Wayne State university and not once in her 22 years of teaching did her salary equal half of my gross earnings ,in fact she banked 80% of every dollar she earned for 22 years teaching which made us retire with over $3 million dollars in the bank .

Tree Climber your giving your son extremely sound advice ,sadly schools are giving students bad career advice when they tell every student they need to go to college to have a good life ,they don't tell kids that 90% of college graduates degrees are unwanted in the workforce ,we have something like a 5,000 to 1 ratio of jobs requiring a college degree vs available jobs ,the 1 field America is lacking employees is commercial & industrial construction ,it's no coincidence that 20 million Mexicans quickly filled those jobs ,and it's a huge lie that employers are paying illegals shit wages ,I worked with roughly 100 Mexicans and not 1 made less than $100,000 a year ,I was paid $48 an hour plus $9.75 an hour vacation pay ,plus nearly $12 an hour twords my insurance and another $8 an hour into my pension ,all toll I was making just under $80 an hour and my journeyman amd apprentices were making $18 an hour starting pay with a $1 an hour raise every 6 months until they reached journeyman level ,if I may offer some advice for you ,advise your son to do his best to sign on with a union company ,my pension is $5,700 a month and my social security that just kicked in is $3,160 a month ,my wife's pension for 22 years with Wayne state is less than $2,000 a month and she spent 8 years in college getting a doctorate .

Here is a sample of the jobs my crew did ,it's a 7,800 square pitch tear off with a 2 ply Siplast spray down modified asphalt system that's covered with a 3rd ply of Siplast Torch down Cap sheet ,the part we made modern marvels for is shown here where my 55 man crew raised just under a half million square feet of roof structure 11 feet above the main roof to accept the new assembly line machines Detroit Deisel installed ,I doubt anybody except Eric has even seen a roofing job this complicated before ,here's my crew ,watch the entire video and tell me if " Your Foreman " can make this happen ?

Only 2 roofing contractors in the USA were even asked to bid on this project ,they were America's largest Roofing Company called Centimark ,and my company ,Royal Roofing Orion Michigan ,America's 2nd largest Roofing company ,the completed job shown here is roughly 3,000 squares of 4 ply John's Manville type 3 hot asphalt and roughly 600 squares of Tremco TPO fully adhered ,this job is a shopping mall on M-59 Utica Michigan amd it took my crew less than 2 weeks to complete .

Skrittles Mcwiggles you've " seen it all " have you ,OK since you are a skilled " Roofer " then explain how to install a fully tapered insulation system over a Type B metal deck for a Factory Mutual wind rating of I-90 ,the tapered system consists of 1/8 inch per foot slope using A ,B ,C ,D tapered panels ,1 inch & 2 inch flat panel Polyisocurinate aka ISO ,and finally for the crickets between roof sumps X and Y tapered panels ,that's a simple task any 2nd year apprentice could be tasked with and complete with only 2 yrs on the roof and you have 9 yrs on the roof .
I know Eric knows how to install tapered roof systems because he's a real roofer ,so let's see what you know ,oh while your at it your 9 yrs of experience should equip you to explain the roofing & waterproofing segment of my crew working on Detroit Deisel that was filmed for Modern Marvel's ,explain what you see my crew doing on an industrial roof since you've seen it all .

I always thought you get what you pay for. Not in this case! I went with Hy-Grade roofing even though they were by far the most expensive quote I received. Worst decision I could have made. They promised to install the roof in 4-6 weeks, of course they were late. When they finally showed up without the proper equipment and they damaged my property. Sad part is that my poor wife found the damage after coming home from her frontline COVID job. Broke my heart to see how upset she was when she saw the damage! SHAME ON HY-GRADE! They are really proud of the “Quality Audit” that they do, but of course they won’t give you a copy of the audit…lol BTW - the “Quality Audit” they did at my house consisted of 2 guys coming over to pick up the leftover junk they left at my house for a month. They never even went up on the roof! Horrible customer service experience! Save your money use someone else!

I'm not from the US so don't really get these shingle roofs? Are they cheap or what is the advantage of them as I can't imagine they would last very long? We would only use that type of roof or similar on a shed. The vast majority of our roofs are tile or slate and on my house which is over 70 years old the roof is tile and still in perfect condition.
tile and slate here will cost you your first born these are asphalt shingles and will last 30 - 50 years the advantage is when installed right they seal together and become one piece as if it was blacktop on a road no cracks no chips safe from wind and hail
The company I work for uses an asphalt shingles roof that lasts 50+ years. We use ONE manufacturer and certified and insured installers so that we can give you a TRUE lifetime warranty. It's not cheap but tile and metal is still more.
My understanding is that the freeze/thaw cycle can ruin a tile roof, but I'm sure it has more to do with saving money in the short term.
most of the roofer guys I know are a serious Drinkers and cocaine consumers they make a good money and enjoy every weekend drinking doing drugs but by monday they are broke again

Yeah, this is a bonehead move for sure. Why anybody would choose to install a starter upside down is beyond me. That little plastic strip(called a selvage strip) you see on the leading edge is _designed to be non stick_ . The leading edge always leads with the adhesive, it's how that product works, it's why it was designed that way. Eric doesn't get this, clearly. Installing like this voids any hope of getting any kind of good warranty with the manufacturer. They'll take one look at this video and say, "Oh. Look, he's installing the starter strip upside down. Fail. Will not warranty."
If you need more proof that this is unacceptable, look at the GAF ProStart installation instructions provided for you on their website. I know it's not Certainteed's instructions(their technical data sheet actually fails to describe which side up the glue goes), but all of these starter strips are basically the same, IKO's leading edge data sheet says similar. Look at the picture in the document. You will clearly see the adhesive strip facing up and out.

he doesn't care about manufacturer warranty obviously with the upside starter he wants the tarline to stick to the aluminum drip edge you numbnuts...
since they changed the tar strip on shingles to back of shingles at bottom you still get your adherence to the starter. double seal, instead of tar strip onto tar strip. the tarred strip used to be on the shingles right where the nail line needs to be so people would nail above that tar line and get blowoffs so they changed the tar strip. it works I've been laying upside down starter for over 10 years

ZipBoard system is what is being used now, but there isnt anything wrong with osb, if your roofing is good enough it shouldnt get wet.

Lol the OSHA guy is not a building inspector he's a safety inspector, dummy you put the starter upside down even a manufacturer will tell you that, so all that fancy paper to get the manufactures warranty you just blew it by putting your starter upside down
If you use , starters on the rake or if you don't use them , it doesn't make a difference .
In the city of Huntington beach this inspector asked me to install them upside down , claiming that water can not get between the metal and the starter when a high wind strikes.
I can't argue with city inspectors, here in southern California , there is no need to use Ice and water shield down the valley , it's freaking dry 11 months of the year, Last time a city inspector was laughing when he saw me installing ice and water barrier, this is not Canada, Washington or any other rainy state .
Remember , starters don't make any difference in any shingles installation, you can even use 3 tab shingles as starter or have of the dimensional shingle, it don't matter.
The starter course goes upside down, then the first course goes on top of that ...It prevents water from running between the tabs ...Actually I don't see the point in doing it on the gable ends, but have seen it done and have done it myself when instructed to do so
Too bad for that Inspector. They can never be wrong even when they are. Same with us roofers. You ask five roofers a question and get five different answers but none of us are wrong.

rich tedesco the reason for installing starters on gables is to bond the roof perimeter together to prevent wind uplift ,and to help heavy rains stay draining down to the gutter/eve edge and not run over the drip edge ,it's the same concept as installing a metal coping on parapet walls ,you always shim the street side of the coping so rain flows on to the roof vs down the walls ,if you skip the gable starter and there's a blow off no manufacturer will pay 1 dime ,I've seen it happen .

I never said you where struggling your clearly a good roofer,However most roofers are struggling to get bye....Yes there are those ones that are hard workers like you and get paid well but my dads a roofer and he tells me all the time to go to school and better myself. Also nobody said you where a bad roofer and nobody told you to choose a different job.All im saying is (MOST) roofers get paid peanuts,You cant argue with anything I said because you know its true.
