  • Come along for a day in the life of a special education teacher. I teach high school students who are working on a modified curriculum, mostly reading instruction! Today I am lesson planning for my highest level students (6th-8th grade reading level) working on informational text and media literacy. I work in a cyber school so I teach virtually or remotely all the time!
Looking for the planner I used in the video: amzn.to/3jZ63DE
Here is the link to the free informational text posters I mention in the video, let me know in the comments if you like the resource:

About Me: I am a high school special education teacher at a cyber charter school. This means we are all virtual, all the time! I work in what would be considered a life skills or self-contained program in a typical brick and mortar school. This means my students are working several grade levels below their peers. I mainly teach reading classes and the students rotate through several teachers in our department for other subjects. A lot of my students and their families have chosen virtual learning due to bullying at their local school or a high number of medical and therapy appointments that make attendance at a typical school difficult. I also teach English as a Second Language online to kids in China through several different companies. I can do this before/after school and on the weekends. I have the BEST students in the world :)

I totally relate to your struggle with TPT and other resources with high school students! I've found some great stuff but often have to modify it to reduce the cute factor or connect it to high interest topics for my older kids. Do you have a TPT page? If not, you should! Love the media literacy topic as well. I taught a debate unit last year with my self-contained senior English class and we focused on the topic of cancel culture. It was fun to watch the kids connect to this and investigate all the different resources and articles we could find online. The students pulled in as many viewpoints as they could to conduct their own debate and had to be ready to argue both for and against. We ended with watching The Great Debaters. Anyway, just found your page and am really enjoying your videos. Keep up the good work!

So I answered my own question after I finished watching and found your TPT link listed. Awesome! :)

Hi Teacher Brett - I am a VIPKID teacher/MCM for years who also started with (I think the same one) a PA cyber charter school this year during the pandemic (middle school). I love it, but since I started I am not sure how to incorporate the features of Manycam/tech with the BBC/Newrow classroom. If you have any advice, or are looking for topics that might be of interest for your channel - I think ways to use technology, and the ways to connect the tech together with your lessons would be very interesting! I also love your tips on planning - very, very helpful info for those of us just getting started with this type of teaching!

Oof the turning in of lesson plans. Man if a link to a google drive isn't enough proof of my lesson plans I can't hang. 😅 You are so organized!

@@TeacherBrett I've never repeated a year. 🤦‍♀️🤷‍♀️ fingers crossed for you!! 🤞 I categorize things by topics as a result so I can find what I'm looking for by concept. Reinventing the wheel gets maddening and tiring after awhile.
