I decided to watch this video as a training for my patience, supporting your way of chitchatting, giving long rounds before going straight to the point. I'm on 00:59 and you are already demanding lots of patience.
My therapist recommended "Gestalt Therapy", and said I should research it before our next session. Even though this video is about design, it actually cleared up a lot of confusion I had about gestalt therapy. Essentially, I tend to think of myself in terms of individual, non-unique traits, and struggle to see how I'm unique as an individual if each of my traits can be fulfilled by other people. It makes a whole lot more sense why my therapist would recommend gestalt therapy after learning about how gestalt theory applies to design.
Just a few more resources for beginners: - The Principle of Inclusiveness - The Law of Prägnanz - Psychophysical Isomorphism - The Principle of Contemporaneity - The Zeigarnik Effect These should be pretty useful to slingshot you into deeper studies.
I'm wondering is this some sort psychology theory that applies to design theory? As far as I know, when we talk about art & design what comes to my mind is Element & Principle of Design.. 😅
@@yusof843 Yes, the Gestalt school developed as a psychological theory about perception. There are therapeutic gestaltic psychologists too (not sure how it works there, I think it has to do with modifying behavior in part to affect the whole, or something like that). It was the first solid scientific description for these kind of phenomena, so it proved useful in visual arts and design, and it became part of the curricula for most related studies.
I'm studying for my MCAT & this is a concept that is slightly covered in one of the textbooks, but the lack of depth and explanation left me confused on some of the principles. This video was super helpful to me for understand the gestalt principles & how to apply them!! Thank you!
Excellent explanation of Gestalt with clear visual examples. This video was a great supplement to classroom materials. Thank you for your efforts in creating the video and content.
So when a young austrian man looked at a map of Europe in the 1920s he didn't see several independent sovereign states, he saw ONE BIG UNIFIED WHOLE. Got it.
Brilliant video. I use GESTALT as part of Coaching young people to be successful in their careers by seeing "The Big Picture" in workplace situations. What's great about your video is people generally are unaware of the forces impacting there behaviour in meetings etc, they just don't see them! Your video is in effect an Analogy because you reveal the hidden psychological "Forces" or more accurately "Subconscious Thought paths" that influence our perception of what we see. Our minds take the raw visual inputs and construct "The Big Picture". YOUR EFFORTS are much appreciated by an audience beyond designers!
We enjoyed this very well-condensed and elaborately explained lecture. We feel like 'Gestalt Theory' is one of the most complicated thought-organizing paradigms in Western thought, and having it in our bag of tricks is very helpful. We hope to watch more of yr videos in the future. :)
Wow Outstanding work...thank you. Beautifully structured , delivered and so simple as to hide the talent and effort behind your work. I am truly wowed!
Fun fact, the Starbucks siren isn't actually symmetrical. There are some small differences between left and right that I didn't learn about until I used to work there. But, I still get the concept and this was a very short and concise video but still incredibly informative
Thank you for making this video and sharing your knowledge - truly appreciated. Your explanation provided more depth than my university textbooks and lecturers - thank you.
Another valuable video man! I wish I could show this to college-freshman me, it would have jumpstarted my design knowledge. I'll certainly be sharing this one ^^
I learned this in architecture school, but as a musician I became interested in how this also applies to sound and music. My bass player tells me that I'm supposed to be playing certain notes, but when I go back to listen to the source music, the notes are not there and I figure his mind must be trying to fill in the gaps with notes that seem like they would be there but are actually not.
hey hi, I have a question. I hope you answer it when you see it "Can we say that anomally principle/law of anomally is same as von restorff effect/Isolation Effect?"..waiting for the reply.. Thanks
Do you have any book recommendations that cover more examples and break downs of these principles? Not that it wasn’t clearly explained but to see more examples in the creative use of the principles to widen my vocabulary of the usage.
I don't think that's how the continuation principle is usually interpreted. The gap is usually the key element. It's about separated elements creating a line which you follow through and you fill the gaps in your mind. Like the underline in ProQuest is not seen as 2 lines, but 1. Or in generall, when we have Text, the bottom part of the text is aligned an therefore creates a line, that leads or eyes.
Solid point, but entirely subjective. Ultimately, it's about the line, regardless of whether you see the positive or the negative (the figure and ground you might say!). It's about how your eye moves through certain elements at the expense of others: the continuation of the perceived path.
sir i am having a little trouble in the law of proximity in the example of the tree shape made by the human figure. i cant really understand how the law of proximity is applied there ? I'll be looking forward for an answer :)
I did not say or imply that my experience watching your production was ruined, or in any way diminished. In fact, I appreciated the content very much. I just wanted to call your attention to the grammatical mistakes to make you aware of them, and make corrections as needed. Your presentation was very professional and clear, well done. Maybe , just maybe, you might have another person review your production before you post it; that's what a publisher of written material would do.j
I have also read about something known as the Law of Common Fate. Objects that move together are perceived to be together. Can you please explain that?
Can we be born with some of these principals instinctively? I know I have always been able to see pass 2d drawing or pictures to visualize the figure in 3d but I have trouble memorizing words for spelling test. I know people who can memorize the spelling of words by looking at them for just a moment.
What would Gestalt Theory say about the effects of resolution factor on categorizing phenomena? If we zoom in on an object, how does our "naming" of what we see change? Is this change lawful/predictable? Also, as we zoom in on say a boundary, the less distinct it becomes until it eventually disappears. It is clear that science (and conscciousness) progress in a manner that increases in detail resolution. The new Webb Telescope, for example, is challenging astronomy's love affair with "dark matter" and "big bang" because of its higher detail resolution. It is also clear that the path from childhood to adulthood is largely characterizable by the effects of incorporating greater detail into one's world view. This action of detail incorporation can be traumatic when it kills off the Easter Bunny and Santa Claus.
Awesome video!! I just don't understand the last A on the last subject. I can't see it what besides that A is supposed to be xd trying to imagine it in reversed color is superrr difficult there.

Happy to help!
I love your aseethetic, the way education should be
A very nice job. I actually expected the video about gestalt therapy principles, but your video was so good that I actually enjoyed it.

I didn't get the typographical figure and ground example

Brilliant video, thanks for the info
Great content, succinct, great presenting, thanks!

Could you say something about the connection between these principles and therapy or its application in counseling?
I'm afraid I'm in no way qualified to do that.
great video, easy to understand !
Awesome video TipTut! :D Thanks.
I have an exam on the 11th for Knowledge in International Communication Management so this helps.

You're obviously much cleverer than I am.
Your comment has a typo FYI.
Touche (and since that is a French word, I may have spelled it incorrectly!}
can anyone explain me the difference between closure and fig ground?? im bit confused
Thanks for the amazing video!!
Great way of explaining
Thanks :)
Thanks for making such a well laid out, visually interesting video to explain Gestalt! Understand far better than I had after reading about it.
I have also read about something known as the Law of Common Fate.
Objects that move together are perceived to be together.
Can you please explain that?
It's basically proximity, direction and similarity but moving together :)
