I BOUGHT This Turbocharged 1 Owner VOLVO S60 For $450

  • I bought this 2001 Volvo S60 2.4t for what the new tires on it cost, and it's leaking oil faster than you can fill it. The owner took the car to a mechanic and he said it was going to cost more than the car was worth to sort out a couple little issues and a very large oil leak. One neighbor told another neighbor to call me and I would buy it, things just came together after that. Today I picked it up for $450, all that's left is figuring out what's wrong and getting it moved down the road. It still runs and drives but as soon as you park it, oil pours out of the engine for quite a while.

    Check PCV pull or push (glove test on oil filler). If PCV sys is clogged, it'll puke oil out the Front/Rear main seals, cam seals...alot of labor to replace the PCV but not too difficult. FCP has great parts and helpful videos for the PCV. Good Luck! I own three Volvos and finally understand their 'quirks'.

    I'm willing to bet a cam seal pushed out of the head. You can replace the seal but that should be followed up with a PCV rebuild kit to reduce the pressure in the crankcase.

    Recently got myself a 2008 version of this car with a similar story. One owner, Volvo maintained with incredible detail. ALL maintenance done within last 30k miles or less. Paid $4000 for the car and felt that was fair based on it's history. Drive it daily..love it. 156k miles and not a problem. Love these things. Had a 2004 AWD version and loved it as much. Bought my wife a 2013 S60 recently. Great cars.

    Unfortunately that timing belt might need to be done again... looks like the front cam seals. Pop off that front timing belt cover to confirm.
    Replace all four cams seals, timing belt/idler/tensioner (if they're contaminated with oil, you may have lucked out), PCV (likely the reason there's an oil leak... PCV is backed up and blew out the seals). I recently bought an '03 2.4T that needed the same thing. I also have an '01 on the driveway that I did the same work to... it's really not that bad. Then again, I've done all those jobs probably 5+ times now with how many Volvos I've owned... lol.

    My bet is that the PVC system is blocked causing the oil to puke out because it’s not breathing.

    • @stevevarholy2011
      @stevevarholy2011 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      My thought, too. Put a glove on the oil filler and see if it inflates, that will tell you real quick whether the PCV is no longer breathing. PCV clogs may also cause it to hunt a bit at idle.

      Gary Tinsley, yeah, it’s a bit of a stretch I know, but I once bought a car (from a mechanic) that thought he had seized the engine... for $75. It had a PVC blockage that forced oil out of the dipstick tube when running. Being a European built car, (Ford Capri from Germany) I was pretty sure that it had a low oil kill switch that would have shut the motor off before seizing. It turned out I was right. I put 125k on that car over the next 5 years... until it was hit by a taxi cab totaling it.

    P2 Volvos eat strut mounts and spring seats. The seat can be replaced with ones from an XC-90 if you want to go for something that will last more than 80K. Struts are usually not too long for the world after the seats go. That oil leak though, oh man, that's on the business end of the engine. Hard to get decent access with out being an acrobat or a small handed child. Good luck, hopefully it's just cam seals. Check your flame trap and associated piping as well if it's a seal. Positive pressure may have caused one or more seals to go. RIP That new T-belt; it's probably oil soaked, no bueno.

    What do you look for on a potential flip car? And do you find most of your cars on FB market? (Is there a video on that that I missed?)

      Joseph Payne i guess it depends on what condition the car is when you get it... I drove mine for 6 years without a problem. Only reason I sold it was because I needed an SUV, so I got an xc90. Same thing.... no problems at all!

    From one volvo s60 owner to another, replace that filler cap gasket with a IPD HD Oil Cap Seal, the factory ones are flawed and tend to leak oil after a few oil changes, and must be replaced with every oil change.. for around $10 you can get a upgraded seal that you won't have to change again @ IPDUSA.com
