I actually enjoyed the meta wrap up at the beginning of the video. It was cool to see the small changes and how new meta decks (like the charizard w/ arcnine) was moving those numbers. If you decide to keep it in the long run maybe a very quick not too in-depth summary would be nice.
Thank you once again for my weekly excuse to delete all my decks and try all the new hotness. The Greninja/Mewtwo EX deck from last week has been my best deck by far over the past 7 days
I think it’d still be good to do occasional macro catch ups on the format. So maybe not every week talking about the most popular decks. But maybe once every few weeks?
I really appreciate that Jeff takes the time to comb through the tournament results for us. Great video! Also, I didn't expect to see a Frosmoth deck in this video!?!?
I think having a line in your video where you say that the standard big three are still winning X% would be a quick and easy way to let new peeps know that they exist. Then you can say, "now lets look at the off meta decks."
On the other hand "this off meta deck did well in a single tournament" is also mostly meaningless. You can put basically any vaguely sensible pile of cards together and run hot once, it doesn't mean the deck is good. The comparisons were at least based on enough runs to statistically mean anything at all. The problem is that "meta report" style content only provides valuable information if the meta has shifted significantly since the previous video. But at this point that isn't really happening. Things are pretty stable right now, so there isn't really any information that can be provided this week that wasn't already available last week.
@bennettpalmer1741 highlighting a breakout deck sometimes encourages more people to play it which leads to larger samples sizes. So I'd definitely disagree that it's pointless.
We probably don't need the full stat breakdown of the top decks every week, but a quick mention of which of them is doing the best can be useful. Whatever the top deck is goes a long way to explaining how off meta decks are attacking the format.
I like the metagame shift report and data on what the best performing build of the best decks are, but I also like the off meta highlights for when I wamt to play something fresh.
For me card games get boring when the meta stablish, while the meta is all over, people playing all kind of decks its so much fun, and its peak for me, once the meta settles and everybody runs the same 4-5 decks its when the card games become borring
So I still think it would be good to put up a chart of how the top three decks are performing at the end of the video, even if there isn't much to talk about. I saw last week that Pikachu's dominance was getting slightly upset and I'd have liked to see if that was a continuing trend as folk adapt to the meta, or if it was just a one-off. Otherwise, front loading the off-meta decks is a great decision.
loved the video but I did personally miss seeing the charts and the comparisons from week to week (although I didn't miss discussing the exact card choices in the top dogs). Have you considered tacking them on at the end of the videos for the later weeks when they get somewhat repetitive for those of us that do want to be more in the nitty gritty but then they are still out of the way for those who don't want that.
I would say a cursory "Decks X, Y, and Z are still going strong" at the beginning is sufficient unless there is some kind of statistically significant shift. Putting emphasis on things performing well that aren't the meta is much more interesting and useful to me.
I really enjoy these meta breakdowns and it’s very inspiring to see off meta decks that are doing well. Makes me try new things out! I will say, a quick blurb about which deck is doing the best would be nice. I mainly just like to know if I should build more against Mewtwo or Pikachu. Cheers!
You can tell when a real gamer makes videos vs you tubers hugging any new content to make a buck. You made me understand many things ive been struggling on my own to figure out!. Thank you Sir Hoogland!
There is definitely an awkward amount of people just reading deck lists to people card for card to fill video run time in the Pocket space at the moment.
The blastoise starmie deck is literally the deck i wanted to make but way better. Always knew that blastoise was a hidden gem and am glad that its getting some attention
De-emphasizing the big 3 decks makes sense when there haven't been any standout innovations in them, but I think when there is one (i.e. arcanine in charizard) it would be good to call it out for at least a second time the next week to check in on it, and I personally would still like a little bit of an overall meta highlight even if it were shorter. Could maybe even put it at the end of the video instead of up front so you get right into the shiny new stuff but still have the consistent report for people like me that want it. Charizard arcanine broke onto the scene last week and put up favorable results in the charts and this week it feels like that thread was left hanging. Did more people bring that list after the previous week? Did it keep it's momentum and continue putting up positive stats even with the increased pick rate (if it did increase)? Those are the kinds of questions I am looking for answers to in a meta report and this video didn't do that for me. Contrast with two weeks ago when the report started showing more basics in mewtwo and that greatly improved its position and then last week we saw where things leveled off following that. That felt like a nice more complete story on that meta development.
Huh, that golbat in the Marowak ex deck is interesting. I can see pairing Marowak ex with Primeape, Sandshrew, Dugtrio, and now Golbat. Very interesting since it gives you a plus when fighting psychic decks. I think the pikachu is still the bigger threat though so I'd be tempted to go with dugtrio instead. Dugtrio has the same energy cost, hp, and damage. But dugtrio also has a 50% chance to block from being damaged after it attacks. I'd also drop the 2 x speed and put another Sabrina and Gio in the deck. With all 1 retreat costs I don't see x speed being as valuable. But I guess the question would be do you drop the primeape for sandshrew or golbat? I don't think primeape is as good as people like to think.
I miss the meta piechart, and recent 19th and 20th card changes, even if it's just a little bit at the opening of the show, giving people, especially those that might not have watched your other videos, an overview of what is actually winning in bulk is good for actually understanding what is going on competitively.
starmie frosmoth is my exact deck i played for the entire pvp event in november, and i have never seen a ptcg tournament in my life (im a new player) thats crazy to me
2 Pidgey, Pidgeotto, Pidgeot 2 Dratini, Dragonaor, Dragonite 2 Oak, Giovanni, Pokeball 1 Sabrina, X Speed or 2 Potion The final 2 cards are variable in this deck. The Pidgeot and low Retreat Cost make it so you can get away with running 1 each of Sabrina and X Speed or even run neither, taking 2 potions instead. Personally, I prefer running with the extra utility over recovery, though, as I find recovery to not be as reliable as making a switch.
Jolteon and Greninja have been two breakouts for me lately, so it's great seeing them get some attention! They both feel like they cut a bit against the grain of what their color is seen as "supposed" to do (all-in around Pika EX or highroll Misty respectively), but they're both lots of fun and very powerful. And both being so easily splashable is great.
6:40 I'm curious if you've tried out using one copy of baby starmie in these water lists. as a stage 1 1 energy 40 attack pokemon, it feels like it could be a viable pivot, and an extra evolution for staryu if you're going first. I wonder if it dying in one to pikachu ex is too much of a risk to run it. but it coudl be cool?
That primeape golbat deck has been around since promo mankey came out. I have come across all these decks online multiple times. We definitely need some new cards to shake up the meta in the next month or two since it has not only been stable but also stale. 1 or 2 good promo cards like mankey and jigglupuff is not enough. Hoping the new support cards are in the mini set coming and they give us stronger variety.
Man these brews are interesting, I hope we get more deck slots 15 starting to few very little with so much stuff I wanna try. Looking @U Melmetal. Also seeing the same big decks wk after wk can get tiresome unless there was a innovation like adding Arcanine to Zard lists that Im ok with learning about new decks.
Jeff shaking up the youtube meta by workshopping just clickbait-y enough titles while not lying in them followed up by great actual content. Few others could compare.
I think onix Brock is just a worse sandshrew/sandslash. You gain 10hp, with a high retreat cost, and it locks you out a trainer card for a turn. Sandslash is almost the exact same, but the lower retreat cost alone I think makes it better. That 10hp isn't worth it.
