Wheel lines. Why?

  • Day one of hell week! We move wheel lines and move wheel lines and then move wheel lines. Oh, and we also fix wheel lines, just to switch it up. Then I get back in the tractor to cultivate potatoes and work way too late into the night. I'm not tired or anything. This is the longest video I've ever made! Can you deal with that?

    Welcome to Farming in the 208! I was born and raised in Idaho, and after working as a mechanic for several years, came back to farming full time. It's just in my blood. We grow (famous Idaho) potatoes along with wheat. I am partnered with my brother, Phillip, and we have one employee, who is also family.
    I made this channel because I wanted to show just how much hard work, time, and dedication goes into producing a crop that ends up on your local grocery store shelves. We always want to produce the best crop possible and so much effort goes into that. I hope you'll enjoy watching my day-to-day life on the farm. Even if you don't know much about agriculture, maybe my story will still be entertaining.
    Oh, and my videos are edited by my wife who finds my mistakes hilarious.

    We had one neighbor with a thunderbird wheelline. All the other ones we had the mover in the middle. This was 30 years ago. Now basically no wheellines left, All pivots.

      Pivots are definitely easier to deal with. Unfortunately some of our field shapes don't work with pivots.

    I remember these from long ago. I didn’t know they were still used, I thought they were all pivots now

      I definitely prefer pivots but unfortunately we have both.

    City boy here (actually old man I guess), always wondered how those big wheel sprinklers worked. Very cool video and interesting guy. Thanks.

    What are some good brands to look for with wheel lines, thanks

      We only have thunderbird wheel lines. A field we rented had a center move. I prefer the thunderbird for ease of moving but the center move would be less maintenance. I'm not sure what brand the center move was.

    hi, what are the main issues/faults that can happen with this type of irrigation systems?

    • @Farminginthe208
      @Farminginthe208  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The drive lines can break and cause the wheel line to rip in half if not paying attention. They need to be properly maintained to not have them turn into big problems

    Hello Matthew. I saw on your videos, that you are using 2 different types of irrigation machine - Valley and wheel line machine. Can you please advise which is better, which is easy to operate, and which is broken rarely? Which you would prefer better to use in overall. Thanks

      We prefer pivots over wheel lines. Both work well if we stay up on maintenance. The pivot takes less man power to stay on top of keeping the crops watered.

    How many acres can you water with those wheel systems?

    • @Farminginthe208
      @Farminginthe208  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It depends on the length. For us, one wheel line will water 1.75 acres per set.

    • @brianlb78

      @@Farminginthe208 oh that's it? So they're not something you want to use for a 50 acre field I guess.

      @@brianlb78 just depends on how much water you have available, for 50 acres I would look into a pivot instead of this. The management time/acre will go down immensely using a pivot at those acreages
