    For the rugby game, the point of that driving maul isn't to conceal the ball from the other team, though that's perhaps a bonus. The driving maul is the only time you're allowed a lead blocker, and as long they stay bound in together, they can essentially create a wedge and drive the whole maul over the line.

    • @KissellMissile
      @KissellMissile ปีที่แล้ว +13

      Nor are they allowed to intentionally do anything to collapse it. It's an extremely common way to score.
      Love the Drua crowd. I wish the rest of the Super League would take a hint and play in smaller stadiums.

    I was at both games. The worst part about the Duke winner is they showed a bunch of replays in the stadium that didn’t show if he was clearly in or not. Me and my friends went to the bars across the street, and sports center finally showed a clear replay of the violation but it was like over an hour after.

      Since it's not reviewable, they may have held off on showing it at the stadium. Don't want to show that kind of mistake right after the game is over with people still in the stands.

    Couple of fun things not mentioned about the lacrosse games; The two goals from ND to tie and to win were both twisters (where you're holding the stick in your strong hand, but twist it so that you can shoot the ball from the angle of your weak side) and this game had the most twister goals of all time in a field game (not official). The first one where Jomboy says "That was a nice play" was the best twister I've seen in 15 years of watching lacrosse 🤣
    And in the Duke game, if you look at the farside referee (the one with the best chance of seeing the foot on the line), #51 from Duke just perfectly screened his vision right as the violation happened!

      I don't think that's his point. Football is the biggest sport in the world. Cricket is huge in other areas, but most laypeople have no clue what the game is or how it works. I think Jimmy accidentally enjoyed it and now wants his viewers to see how fun the game actually can be. To be fair, there's nothing really "interesting" about football. Cricket has a ridiculous amount of nuances (which can make it difficult to even understand) that make it interesting. That is why he highlights it.

    Fun fact about Luton Town: their starting goalkeeper (Ethan Horvath) is American, and he is one of the backup keepers for the USMNT. He has been part of two straight promotion campaigns (Nottingham Forest and Luton) from the Championship to the Premier League, both times through the dreaded playoff. If he becomes a regular starter for Luton in the Prem (his loan would need to be renewed/made into a permanent deal), he'd be the first United States goalkeeper since 2017 (Brad Guzan) to be a starting goalkeeper for a Premier League side.

    Couple notes on Rugby; the play is called a maul. It happens all the time, but that was a fairly well executed one. The reason the other team doesn’t swarm the guy with the ball right away is because of the offside rule that rugby has. You can’t just rush from the side you have to go through the “gate” thats established when the maul starts. Secondly, he has to take the kick from the same angle that the try was scored which is why he’s off to the side like that. That kick was still shanked pretty bad, but its trickier than it looks.

    • @amireallythatgrumpy6508
      @amireallythatgrumpy6508 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not the same angle. The same distance from the side line. You can have any angle as long as you're on that line.

    If you're looking for more rugby content - look at the ending of the Oceania Women's Rugby Championship, between Fiji and Samoa.
    Samoa were up 16-13 in pouring rain with a couple of minutes to go, when Fiji mount an attack from 40m out to score a try. They miss the conversion, leaving Fiji up 18-16.
    From the kick off, Fiji catch it and kick it out, thinking it was full time, but there was actually 15 seconds left. From the lineout, Fiji does an infringement that gives Samoa a penalty. They shoot for goal, win 19-18, and win the championship for the first time ever.
    It was also big because of a global league set up for women's rugby - the winner (Samoa) goes to WXV 2, while the loser (Fiji) goes to WXV 3.

Few years back my hometown HS was at state championship for football, after winning state out of nowhere the year prior, and the game ended on a touchdown just like this. Other team went for a dive at the bag on the corner of the endzone, cleaaaaaaaarly out, but got called a touchdown and won the game. Even had a good photographer right there who got near frame by frame shots even showing it clearly was not a goal. it was a huge controversy for a while, but the call was made and theres nothing else that could be done about it. Unfortunate for the kids, but they had 2 years of straight butt kicking so all in all it was a good couple of years for them

    Rugby player here (but still new), the “pile” is called a maul, and is very common after the “throw ins” (line outs). To answer your question as to if it’s to conceal the ball, that’s not the main goal. The main goal is to gain extra meters (or score) while your allowed blockers. While defensive players probably can’t see the ball, they can probably take a wild guess as to where it is in general, but that doesn’t matter too much since you wouldn’t be allowed to just go tackle them anyway, even if you’re not in the maul.
    Rugby gets pretty confusing for people who are new (especially if they try and relate it to American football), but once I started getting the rules it becomes a lot clearer why they are the way they are. If you ever watch a full game and listen to the referee, they play a much more commanding role than in any other sport. Whereas in soccer the primary goal of refs seems to be to call fouls, rugby referees make commands throughout the game that ensure the game flows smoothly.

    Thanks for covering some rugby, Jomboy! That bumrush technique is called a maul that is usually formed after a lineout. The other team knows the ball will be at the back of the maul, but they are only allowed to get to it through the middle of the maul and are not allowed to swim around the sides as that will draw a penalty or even a penalty try if the referee deems it to have prevented a try. So it comes down to having a stronger forward pack to your opponent or sacking the maul as soon as it forms legally

    I know it’s confusing, but the Champion’s League is the premier European competition made up of the top placing teams throughout Europe. What Luton town won was the EFL Championship playoff tournament which is the second tier of England’s domestic league. Championship =/= Champion’s League.

    If an offensive player is pushed into the crease there is no penalty and the play continues. However the player must make every effort to get out of the crease immediately. *If a player shoots or bounces the ball into the stands, the other team is given possession.

    The rugby was a standard play, a driving maul from a lineout near the tryline. The hooker gets the ball because he's last to arrive at the back, and once he's bound on, the defending side can't legally get at the ball. They can only try to stop the maul, which is *really* hard.

    In rugby when you form a maul like that, you can't just run around the outside of the maul to tackle the guy with the ball. As long as the maul stays together then the other team has to push through the front of your maul in order to get the ball.

    The depressing thing about that rugby match was that Moana lost every single game up to that point. A chance to finally win and they blew the conversion. Fortunately for them, they won their final game for their first win of the season

    What’s the stats on the soccer teams who win and get to move up to the next level and the dudes on the team who helped make that happen don’t get to play in the next season? Not all of them, but like 3 dudes who get replaced for whatever reason.
