Great little Camera ! Mount Contax Zeiss Lenses on it and your are good ! My sister had a FX-3 with a Zeiss 50mm 1.7. I used the Kodak TMAX 400 a lot, though it was 6x6 in Hasselblad, I exposed it as ISO 200 and developed it in a thin solution of TMAX developer very gently for 11 minutes with 2 softly agitations each half minute, it gave negatives which was very rich in grey tones (high dynamic) but still with very good contrast, I can recommend it.
@@graham_white Yes, but I had done it before with other films and developers, so I had some experience and it was easier to "guess" ;) The reason I did this, was because I gave up the "zone system" which took too much time and I used too much film and always ha to carry 5 Hasselblad magazines.
The light meter issue is due to the battery. It was designed to use mercury oxide 1.3v batteries that aren't available. The best option these days is the zinc air batteries at 1.45v --- all other options are worse. I have a FX-2 that has the same issue. BTW, that ML 50 mm lens is worth about $29 these days if it's in good shape like you say it is. It's a really nice lens that's cheap because of the unusual mount, and they made a LOT of them back in the day.
I got an FS-3 super a few months ago and I can confirm the lightmeter activates on a half press. Haven't had the chance to try it out yet, hopefully this summer they'll let us out 😅
That was my first camera and it taught me photography. It was early in my military career and I would hop on my bicycle and later motorcycle with my camera across my back and hit the road with some black and white film. I wore that camera out.
@@graham_white Yes, it was a great experience, back when life was a lot simpler. Today I'm installing light seals on a couple of my old film cameras and I'm looking forward to hitting the road again to rediscover that sense of adventure.
Fx-3 is a classic. It is simple, easy to use and inexpensive. I have used Minolta xd-7, Nikon FE2, F401, Olympus OM10, Canon eos, contax slr ,Pentax me super, mamiya ze and some medium formats. My top favourite is fx-3. 👍👍👍👍👍
I have an Fxd quartz with a 50mm f2 lens which I bought from a charity shop for £20. I found a kit to replace the body leather for £12. Its my favourite camera now and I have a Nikkormat ft2 with a 50mm f2 lens and a Nikon FE with a 55mm2.8 Ai micro Nikkor lens. The Yashica Fxd quartz is perfect for me at the moment because its so light.
I had yashica where the plastic battery cap was severely damaged, it is really difficult to find another one that exactly fits, so i rather have something more sturdy; but anyhow this is a full mechanical camera so no battery needed :P
I was wondering how difficult it was for that to happen, and also if any other battery cabs would fit the same size. Good to know. My issue with the metal ones is overtime they get stuck or Cesar especially if you have any corrosion at all. Berries with models of course but yes. Thanks for the input
Excellent Flick! I do use my FX-3 since decades, although i do love Contax SLRs, the FX-3 does have a extraordinary Shuttersound, and it's the simplicity, that -just- works, all the time! The FX-3 is a cheapskate (well, vs. Contax) SLR, but very reliable, it does have a plastic Body, over a Metal contruction. I like my FX-3 way much. ;)
nice! Honestly I have never seen a shutter count lifespan for any vintage cameras but I have never really specifically looked for them. They are all being used now well past what their lifespan was intended to be to begin with.
Hi Graham! Great video about the FX3. Will this camera work without the battery? Is the shutter mechanical and does the battery only operate the light meter? Thanks for your help. Anthony.
Hi Graham. How did you get on with the light leaks? Was it the seals ? I have just added a comment and tip to Jason regarding the duff leather ( it’s a common fault with these cameras) great vid by the way. Regards. Danny.
Vespa 64m thanks Danny! Yeah it’s a cheap fake leather I’ve seen it on several of them. And yes it was seals I believe. Have gone into the habit of replacing them on any camera I buy unless they look brand new.
@@graham_white Hi Graham. Thanks for the reply. I have a large collection of the older cameras, mainly SLR’s, all makes. I have done a few light seal repairs with the foam replacement but I am going to try string as we call it in the UK on my next attempt. Regards. Danny.
Until you mount a Zeiss 50mm f1.4 or the 35mm f2,8 you won't realize the amazing images you can create. Who needs a light meter? Use Sunny 16 and take awesome images and knowing S16 will make you a much better photographer.
Danvil I think you’re 100% right on that one. And yes. Don’t use the light meter to much. But for those who need it more frequently it is a bit annoying placement wise.
Hey, why are the shots so grainy? Even Tri-x looks less grainy than this. (and that's considering that it is a traditional cubical grain film as opposed to t-max which is the "modern" finer tabular grain.) What did the lab processed it in?.....btw, you are doing a great job with this channel, you deserve a lot more subscribers, keep shooting film👍
I have actually been wondering the same thing. I sent these off to be developed and scanned (along with other rolls from the same batch at different times and shot with different cameras) and the results were the same as far as look/ grain. It could be too much agitation with development or the type of developer. Lastly, It is more likely the scans. I had the cheaper scans done since I mainly rescan/ DSLR scan afterwards if and when I ship off for development. I believe TMax can have some issues when scanned on Frontier or Noritsu. I will have to look further into it.
Guys, I have a problem trying to put a new roll in the camera ! I can't find how to engage the triger to the "crank" back after removing the previous roll ! anyone ?? it's a yashica fx3
I just got one,the film advance dosnt budge much and i cant see anything through the glass ,do i need the battery to fix it? Or could it be something more serious?
I found one for sale but it comes with a 28 mm lens. I’m a begginer so idk if it’s the best deal, although it's the cheapest good quality camera i could find. analog cameras and film are very expensive in my country right now :( Great Video, thanks!
I have a Yashica fxd quartz with a 50mm f2 lens. My favourite camera. I also have a Nikon FE, a Nikkormat ft2, a Pentax Spotmatic. I re skinned the Yashica with a kit I found on Ebay and now it's pristine. I am looking for other Yashica ML lenses for it now.
Hey @Graham White, I just got my dad’s FX-3 Super as an early graduation present and it’s leather has seen some better days. I was wondering if you ever posted the video re-leathering it and if not do you have any suggestions on doing so. Also with the Camera he had the 50mm, 135mm, and 70-210mm lenses along with the CS-14 and CS-140 flashes. I’m trying to pick up photography as a hobby during quarantine so I was wondering if you had any tips for using bigger lenses like the 135mm and 70-210mm and different Flashes. Also I really loved the video, it was the first one I found when researching the camera, I plan to watch some of your other videos, keep up the good work! +1Sub
Jason Goosen hey Jason! Thanks, I appreciate you checking it out and glad it was helpful. I would have to research those flashes as I’m not quite sure about those specific models. I actual just finished reskinning mine the other day! Hoping to put that together soon. It is relatively easy and you can buy precut skins online just do a quick google search. Here is one such site. hugostudio.com. My tip for those larger lenses would be use a tripod or make sure your shutter speed is double your lens length or you might get shake. The 135 would be great for portraits and will give you a better bokah/subject separation because of compression. Same with the 70-210 (depending on if it’s a variable f stop) but older zoom lenses don’t usually yield good results. The science behind glass elements etc just wasn’t there yet so they tend to be less clear etc. great lenses for highlighting parts of a building, landscape or subject instead of the entire scene... If that makes sense?
Hi Jason. I have the FX-3 and I used a pencil eraser to remove the top layer of leather. It left a really nice grey felt finish which I decided to stick with. You could try that while you decide the full recover. It didn’t take me long to do. Regards. Danny.
Graham White Yeah like Vespa said I still have the felt liner but I’ll definitely check out the site to see if any of the skins check my eye. And regarding the bigger lens it is a variable f stop. I took a couple of rolls testing out the different lenses but yeah I think I’ll probably get a tripod since I don’t have one. The flashes are www.depop.com/products/awesomecameras-yashica-cs-14-flash-nice-compact/ and Yashica CS-140 Electronic Flash for Yashica 200-AF and 230-AF Camera www.amazon.com/dp/B0047CY6D4/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_r2dVEbK01CPY6. But the problem with the CS140 flash has a broken mount would that be worth getting replaced?
Jason Goosen I’ll be posting mine teaming video soon. I mean if the other flash works I don’t think you need to have the other fixed. Also i don’t think they are worth repairing since I assume they are cheaper than a repair would be.
thanks for sharing. Im waiting for my yashika fx-3 to arrive
