I'm feeling the 1 arm row in my traps way more than I should. In fact, after doing it, my traps were tight and my neck was a little stiff. I was using a 16 kg bell, which is a small fraction of what I barbell row, but the motion feels really different. Should I go lighter? I didn't feel like I was 'muscling' the motion, so maybe my technique just sucks?

Your neck/traps could definitely be tight so a light warmup is always good. I had the same problem for years in my traps but not lats. You need to keep the shoulders down and find a row motion that works for your body. Seriously. Forget how someone else does it-just find a way to row without pain. Eventually the trap involvement goes away.

Starting from the floor doesn't prevent inertia - it OVERCOMES inertia. It prevents momentum.
