  • In this series, we'll be highlighting customers that stop by the shop, or we run in to at the track or shows.
    First up is Jay Hahn and his amazing 1992 Camaro that we've dubbed "The DSE-Z's younger cousin." Jay built this ride at home in his garage and it's pretty awesome, so enjoy!
    Wheel Specs: 18x11 6.0" Backspacing Front/6.5" Backspacing Rear
    (Note: Jay's car has a stock axle, and ours is narrowed. Both cars have clearance modifications)

      I’ve had my 69 Camaro since ‘97. It has a LS2 427 stroker and a lot of DSE suspension pieces. I still work on it and change stuff. Sweet 3rd gen by the way.

    That blue one looks incredible. The 3rd gen styling has aged so damn well. The styling is timeless if you ask me. With the right stance and wheels ( like both of them ) it looks like a race car. Kinda like the 70-73 Trans Am. It just looks great from every angle. Chevy outdid themselves with the 3rd gen body style. Nothing has looked that good since IMO. Even the retro styling of the 5th gen.

      I agree with you. The 3rd gen is still the best looking Camaro they’ve built. I love my 91 and I’ve owned it for 18 years and I still stop and admire what a fine looking machine it is. My goal is to have it like these DSE Z’S.

    Falling in love with this 3rd gen body style more and more, especially when you see it done right like this green one! Love the wheels, and the stance is perfect. Wonder what it would look like with a factory GM gray paint job and these same wheels in satin or polished black. 🤔🤤

    In the 90s I had a 75 firebird as a daily driver (still have it 🙂) as it started getting rust issues I ended up getting an 88 iroc to use as my daily transportation.
    I could not believe how much better the 3rd gens handled, I cant imagine how they must be with all those mods. I ended up getting rid of the Iroc, it had a rod knock starting, was full of computer issues at the time were not an easy or cheap fix, then the trans went. It was sold to a guy down south who was planning on building an scca car out of it.
    It was a weird base model iroc, 305 auto, no t tops, vin showed it was built with the regular camaro 15" wheels but it had iroc center caps. Was white with gold stripes tan interior. I always wonder what happened to it, and if the next owner had just as many problems as I did.
    That car hated me every time I fixed something 2 other things would break. Looked really cool but I think my firebird put some vodo on the camaro cause it was jealous or something lol!

    First "fast" car I ever drove was an 86 IROC a classmate of mine had in high school in the mid 90's. It was a blast, his family raced so it was "slightly" tuned with a few more ponies but not too much, probably around 275 whp... but it was a blast, the stock suspension was pretty good, easy enough for a 16 year old novice to throw into a power slide and recover easily! Love DSE 3rd Gens builds!

    I have been building a 3rd gen myself. A 1992 TRANS AM GTA. I stripped all the running gear, suspension, up graded brakes. Replaced with a hawks 3.73 rear end, qa1 suspension. So the entire undercarriage has been rebuilt. I working out the suspension and then pulling the engine and transmission doing body work and then planning on dropping in a LSX 454 or LSA. I struggled with this I was originally going to doing a FIRST TPI to kind of keep it period correct. I bought this gta over drinks at a bar in Nashville TN during a Marine Corps reunion. I had a GTA when in the Marines and one of my Marine brothers would ride home with me when we had liberty. We talked about how much fun we had on those drives and all the times I got pulled over. When this build is done the both of us will road trip it to Camp Lejeune, North Carolina to recapture a few of those days. :)
    If I were to do this over again I would go with Detroit Speed. No problems with the Qa1 but Detroit Speed seems to have much more complimentary parts and gear.

    Both beautiful cars, and beautiful builds. ...as someone who's owned thirdgens for over 30 years, I can explain why "we" don't like the trap door for the fuel pump, and most of us have NO issues with either of these cars having one. It's about survivors. Original cars, and not cutting them up. With SOOO many pumps that go bad, and sooo many people who just don't care about "original", we see this topic come up a lot, and it's kinda taken on a life of it's own. Most of us who've been around these cars wouldn't ever suggest these two cars NOT have a trap door any more than we'd suggest running stock 15 or 16 inch wheels. But if you're asking $30k for a low mile original Iroc, it better not have a fuel pump door.... and SOOO many of them do.

    • @detroitspeed
      @detroitspeed  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Original cars are harder to come by, so we completely understand that. When it comes to a purpose build car that wasn't the nicest thing to start with, it's no biggie, but thank you for your input!

    Whoa rare Cadillac ELR. Talk about random. Mod that! I’ve heard of people now able to tune them.

    Both cars are beautiful. Ive been wanting another 3rd gen and maybe these are my motivation. Maybe I overlooked it.... I see the wheel specs but what about tire specs?

    • @detroitspeed
      @detroitspeed  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Do it! Both cars run 315/35/18 Rival S tires.

      It will take some modification, but they could fit if you do it right.

    Nice cars planning on swapping my 91 RS but I want to run the TKX T5. someone needs to come out with the factory style TPI Z28 front ram air box with a larger snorkel and larger drop in filters for the LS intake

    You list 6” backspacing which is 0mm offset on the front and 6.5” (13mm) rear. This means you are running more offset (wider stance) in the front than in the rear. Can you explain this please? I’ve always thought you want your wider deeper offset wheels in the rear.

    Thanks for showing these 2 beauties. I’m still enjoying my 5th gen with a big cam. What size cam is in the green 3rd gen ?

    When someone says "true dual exhaust" for a thirdgen, you know the car will make more car shows than it will actually be driven in anger.

    Will your company ever have plans for an IRS suspension for the 1st gen Camaros?

    I hate to be that guy, but I started building an 8,000 rpm engine for a 1988 Camaro in 2014, wanted to do it in Chrysler B5 blue, and didn't have the money to finish it before Detroit Speed! Definitely not doing blue anymore so as not to be confused with DSE-Z haha

    The Japanes knew that access to the fuel pump is important .
    Too bad GM didnt realize that .
    my 95 Z28 has a trapdoor now , my 84 Z28 will get one if needed.
    Heres a tip that I learned years ago with my 1969 Firebird always use Rain-X on your windshield ( The Wipe on Type ) and carry a bottle of it with you if you travel.
    if you apply it right, it works great and can save your ass in bad weather .
