I have lived near the river rother since 1980 and this is the worst flood we have had, a new cycle track, works by yorkshire water, and a lot of new housing to the south of Chesterfield seem to have made the flooding worse!

I agree all the fields and hedges/trees have gone from a lot of places now you see floods in places that have never flooded before

every time they say they will (and have) sorted out the flooding problem. they need to dredge the river and build better flood plains. The Avenue project can take much more water if needs be.

The picture is at Horns Bridge in Chesterfield.
This is at the confluence of the River Rother and the River Hipper.
The Rother does indeed flow through the Avenue area from the south. There are quite a few flood plains between the Rother's source to the south (near Pilsley I think) including the Avenue, but many of these have been concreted over. Even so, Horns Bridge has always been a problem for as long as I can remember and I'm 82. I can't remember it being as bad or so widespread in past years. Problem is how to get rid of the water. You can't pump it because there's nowhere to pump it to. Same applies to the River Hipper joing the Rother at Horns Bridge.
In ancient times the area where the picture is was a huge flood plain/swamp. The houses built on that flood plain on Hasland Road were flooded last week as well.

This is what happens when we try to dominate Nature.
We should work with it not against it.

1:03 Sympathy for the stranded car and its owner, but it may have saved my car as, when I saw it up ahead, then almost up to the windows, I was able to do a U turn before the water got any deeper. 4:45 Very decent of you to consider the feelings of those in the residential area; the worst flooding I've had in my home was in the cellar, where some of my wine bottles lost their labels (didn't even spoil the wine!)

Some strange spellings and (lack of) capitalisations in the captions, but that aside thanks for taking the video, which was very well-timed to show that the railway was in operation. Did you synchronise that with a rail timetable?
