    It actually is very hilarious at how they’ve been doing political songs and jabs at the government but now they’re being praised by the same people they wrote against. Like Bts almost got black listed for speaking on events that the media was trying to gloss over, Bts knew they’d get into trouble and yet they spoke on these events anyway bc it troubled them and mattered to them to the point where they did not want to stay silent. One example of nearly getting blacklisted is the song spring day it very directly referenced the Sewol ferry disaster that occurred where a lot of people including high school students ended up dying, the government officials and everything surrounding this was as tho it was something not to discuss bc of the tragedy. The boys donated to the families of the tragedy and used the same yellow ribbons in a subtle scene in the music video that showed support to the people who lost their life that day and their families. The majority of what Bts speak about are taboos in Korea that’s why they’re seen as political views

    lmao giving up human relationship doesn't mean that you don't talk to other ppl, but rather the lack of human relationship due to busy millennials. Like how it's said in the video, unemployment rate is so high in Korea that in order for millennials to get a decent job, they need to learn new languages, get certificates, do internship, and constantly do things to prove their future employers that they haven't been killing their time during uni. Thus, their bond between friends have grown weak compared to earlier generation.
    Also on top of that, Korea's economy was basically built on ppl comparing and competing, so it's a highly competitive society and we constantly compare ourselves with ppl around us. Constant comparing makes yourself feel like shi*, so ppl tend to avoid human contact when they've been unemployed for a long time.

    i feel like all developed countries are facing this problem. the older generation created a bunch of problems and left them for us millennials to solve but it’s gotten so much harder to afford a decent living but the oldies think we’re just slacking off and call millennials lazy and financially inept :(

    Quick side note:
    Paul said “they ain’t holding the door for nobody.”
    Interestingly enough it is actually *NOT* a part of Korean culture to hold the door for others.
    So if you’re expecting the person in front of you to do so, you’ll catch a door to the face. And likewise, if you hold the door for people they’ll look at you either weird or like you are hella respectful (and there’s also the likelihood that people will just assume you’re holding the door so they keep filing in😂😂).

    There was a bit more nuance to the stork/baepsae analogy that you might have missed; in addition to sort of explaining metaphorically the disadvantage millennials face compared to the baby boomers, it also symbolizes a common mindset in Korean culture, that people are born with innate abilities and traits. So essentially that some people are born storks and others are crowtits, and you can't do anything to change that, it just is what it is. So that is a mindset they are also challenging by using this metaphor, saying they are considered "crowtits," both by society and the kpop industry, but they can do just as well and and are just as talented as those considered "storks." Overall great reaction, thank you for doing this video!

    When I first read the translation for Baepsae, I thought the lyrics were quite universal. Most countries struggle with issues of economic disparity. Though the issues in Korea may be extreme due to the high youth unemployment, I've read many similar news stories about the US and other countries. Even in the US, Millenials have postponed marriage, having kids, buying house etc. due to economic instability. "Passion pay" also reminded me of the debate and ethics around unpaid internships in the US. Even though, corporations are earning record profits, employee wages have remained stagnant.
    These issues have only been exacerbated under the current US administration. If you care about universal healthcare, $15/hour minimum wage, LGBTQ+, global climate change, clean water etc. I hope US citizens 18 and over will vote on Nov. 6th. Please vote, this may be the most consequential election of our lives 🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏
    Also, I believe spitting in Korea is considered pretty rude, just in case Paul goes to Korea someday.
    And, Baby boomers are the generation born after World War 2.

    • @frontline327
      @frontline327 5 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Dee Walker That makes sense. I've read that Korea has the highest rate of smoking in OECD countries. But, I've definitely heard Koreans say they think it's impolite. Maybe it depends on the person like it does in the US. I live in the US, but I think spitting on the ground is gross and impolite. Sorry Paul. Please keep your spit in your own mouth. Paul obviously feels differently tho, lol

      Exactly. The situation described by DKDKTV in S.Korea especially regarding the housing market is something that has been talked about for years and years and years here in UK, and how first time buyers are getting older and older.

    • @AramasG

      I just wrote something similar - it's the same here in the UK.:(
      Also spitting on the street is disgusting lol like spit in some tissue or something (or at very least in the road)- lots of people here do it but it's considered bad manners :D

    • @hannahbalkovec
      @hannahbalkovec 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yeah, exactly. I was actually shocked that they seemed so surprised by millennials putting off doing things because of the economy. We get blamed A LOT in the US for destroying industries (cars, real estate, diamonds lol) because we don’t buy from them. Or for destroying institutions (marriage, religion) because we don’t believe in them. When I watched the explanation video it actually made me enjoy the song even more because I could so closely relate.

  • @EM-rm2xh

    You guys are looking more handsome every day.
    As someone who has grown up in the lower class, this song really speaks to me. I think millenials in America (especially coming from poverty) are going through the same thing. My favorite line is how they address older generations telling us "just work harder" and "effort, effort, effort" not even realizing that we're having to put in three times the effort in order to just barely get by.
    Another song that is clever like this one is GoGo. I don't think there's really an explanation video about it, but it's got some great social commentary as well. It makes fun of the materialistic nature of today's youth while at the same time criticizing the society that made them that way. They're saying, yeah, the young generation might spend all their money on luxury food, booze, etc. but what's the point of saving anything if they'll never be able to afford a house, have work grant them vacation time, or get out of poverty. Plus, the song uses really happy instrumentals and a fun dance, but the key is in B flat minor which evokes the emotion of mocking and extreme discontent. The cover and image of the song is a sort of 'carpe diem' 'yolo' vibe, but underneath it's really sad......much like the young generation's lives.

    One thing that I noticed is that RM used these same millennial terms in "Dope." In his rap sequence he says - "Samposedae? Ohposedae?
    But cause I like beef jerky, 6 gun generation Yukposedae" and finishes with "So can I get a little bit of hope?" Which is clever because Chilposedae means giving up hope. They slip in lots of political content, which makes me really appreciate Dave and Danny taking the time to explain it all. Here's an interesting link to the generations and what they've given up. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sampo_generation

    It isn't just this song! There are a few songs that are equally important that I wrote and explained to you several months ago over a period of time about songs like "No More Dream" and "N.O." as well. I am so happy and grateful for Danny and David from DKDKTV who finally have started this so very important series! It's been really frustrating for me always being so aware of the true meaning of this song when so many are more focused on the "silly dance" part of the song which they do Rock Paper Scissors for in the beginning and who loses has to do the silly dance! There is the "Baepsae" Silver Spoon Mirrored Dance practice that is the only one that has excellent pretty accurate English subtitles if you click onto CC even though it doesn't say Eng sub in the title! This is the only one that will help anyone understand the lyrics since the color coded lyric vid is inaccurate and totally misleading and confusing and doesn't even really make sense! Plus, yes, the choreo most of the time does go very much so with the lyrics! Thanks so much for seeing this! It really sheds light on, I feel one of the most important parts of BTS and further explains why they have such a diehard loyal following! Thanks to BTS shedding light and acknowledging these problems many who've listened to their songs do not feel as alone anymore! BTS have literally saved lives!!!

    • @shinryouzen

      Abbiea123 This is my entire feeling every time I mention Spinebreaker. Back before BTS did the homemade MV for Spinebreaker I always thought it was a powerful and controversial song against kids these days. But now people think about when they hear Spinebreaker is the meme-y MV and how funny it is. I'm not even blaming the boys for the MV (I'm actually glad they made one since the song is pretty underrated so now it got its promo, I often hear it play in Vlive Run episodes too), it's just that most of the people I see fail to read deeper into the meaning of songs like Spinebreaker. Even their choreo in the MV shows how they are emphasizing breaking their spines like how the lyrics say the kids are breaking their parents spines because these kids have been spending their parents' hardearned money on overly expensive branded jackets just because everyone in school has them. What's ironic is that BTS has a song called Baepsae which criticizes the older generation but they also have Spinebreaker which criticizes those types of younger generations. LOL they made songs for both generations so no one is safe, when BTS sees these issues they point it out.

  • @abbiea1237
    @abbiea1237 5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    Because for BTS it's always about saving the lives of the younger generation who many go through depression or ultimately become suicidal!! Because of all the pressure put on them and their hope and dreams being squashed or taken away! BTS songs are political and speak up against society as well because they're talking about things that up until 2017 before their last president finally got impeached you could easily be blacklisted for! Even talking about depression was not allowed! The new President Moon Jae-In loves and admires BTS. The First Lady was even singing along to their songs at their friendship concert between France and Korea that BTS just attended and performed at! They are trying to save the youth of Korea while introducing Korea internationally quite successfully where other nationalities even want to learn Korean and go to Korea all because of BTS. This is why the President just gave them the award Medal of Merit that only way older people usually at least in their 50's or more like their 60's or older ever received before!

    Yes!!!! I love this song! I'm so glad you guys watched this video! I liked this song a lot already but I love it even more now. It's my anthem seriously. I live in the south with high number of conservative baby boomers around. You wouldn't believe how much constant complaining in public, in earshot of me, they do about how "lazy" millennials are that we just don't work hard enough that's why we don't own houses etc in my area. They think I'm a loser because i work in food service. Meanwhile, I and half the people who work with me have college degrees and massive student loan debt. I had to get work where i could find it because I couldn't find a job in my field. At present, my coworkers who just have high school degrees are in a better economic situation then I am. And we have "passion pay" here it's called internships. And some of these internships you will work even up to a year without pay even more depending on what field your going for. You work the internships to gain experience so you can get a paying job later. But if your competing with people who have a degree (they received years ago when school loan costs were 1/6 th they cost now) and 10 yrs work experience good luck getting hired. I would have honestly been better off if I'd either gone to trade school, nursing school, or joined the military then going to college/university. So this song speaks to me a lot.

After watching that video I had reached the conclusion that I was following the right group. Bapsae and Spine breaker are probably the songs with more social criticism... Spring day has a critic too but it's more subtle, you must watch the explanation video to get the full message.

    Before they debut, some members of BTS did work. Suga worked as a delivery driver to help pay for his college expenses, but stopped after he was in a car accident and hurt his shoulder. When he told the company what was going on, the company paid for this college tuition. He talks about it on one of the Burn the Stage episodes. He was on a motorbike and when he regained conciseness the wheel of the cars tire was in front of his face. His shoulder ended up being out of socket. You could say that he almost died. An angel was with him for sure.

    When I first learned the meaning I thought, no wonder they have one of the highest, if not the highest, suicide rates in the world. Also, later I watched a documentary about the extremely high number of people there who LITERALLY refuse to leave their room. There is a name for it, I forget what it's called, but the person is so depressed and traumatized that they are unable to even leave their room. So MANY young people. Family members must bring them food, but rarely see them. Very sad. I am grateful for the channel you mentioned that explains the lyrics from a Korean perspective. I see SO many 'reaction' videos where the reactor is COMPLETELY clueless to what the song is really about and I am now uninterested in those reactions. You love it so you'll do it even if you're not getting paid right. It's the same bs when people get paid very poorly or not at all for internships.

    Don't want to sound like a broken record, but since I found this channel yesterday, I've been binge watching all your BTS vids. Love your genuine reactions, going to check out some of your other stuff too after all the bangtan stuff.

    I'm glad you mentioned the dancing, because it's actually another clever commentary from Bts. The dance is does indeed look like birds or storks, like you said, but it's also mimicking traditional Korean dance, once again reminding us that the older generation are storks. ALSO, Bts loves to incorporate past lyrics in newer songs, and in Dope, they mention sam-po-sadae and oh-po-sadae (3rd generation and 5th generation who have given up 3/5 things).

    1) I love this channel
    2) I hope Paul comes in more videos, please show him the storyline😭
    3) I'm not sure if you reacted to any Squishy Min Yoongi videos but theres a ton on that channel and they are all amazing and hilarious. Theres some guide videos to the members and to the different BTS eras you can use for Creating Armys Series, but theres also videos like 'BTS Habits' and 'Jungkook Being a Brat' so I really recommend them for a good laugh

    When I first heard Baepsae it was just a song that got me pumped but when I found out the meaning it blew me away. It still remains as one of my favorite BTS songs. I feel like the millennial and baby boomer thing is also something that could be applied in the US. Millennials are blamed or shamed for a multitude of things by the baby boomers when they are the ones that made the problem.

    baepsae is the song that cemented me as a fan of bts!! i knew that we shared the same values and that they could make badass and fun songs while still being heavily political.
    Am I Wrong is anothrer one of my other favorites too in terms of political songs, especially the line adressing what the minister of education of south korea at that time said about the class system.
    Another one is also paradise which is an incredibly well done and reassuring critique on neoliberal society's expectations of sucess as the only valuable thing in life.
    in conclusion: i love bts

    Interestingly we are actually facing the exact same situation as Korea here in the US because of our envolvement in the Korean War along with the Vietnam War. Wars create new jobs and with it a boom of economic growth, the « baby boomers » are the generation that saw a lot of soldiers coming back from war and starting families in good economic times. So even though Korea’s problems tend to seem magnified due to their lack of space and group mentality, we are facing very similar problems for the same reason.

    It took me by surprise that this was their most political song because "am I wrong" is out there and is very direct... then I saw this video and I undertood that there was more to the lyrics that I just didn't get..that's why I love this series
    and that whole n-poe sede (or however you write that) helped me understand RM's verse in "DOPE" because he doesn't say "giving up on 3, giving up in 5, how about 6" that's just something that they put in the lyrics because they couldn't translate his message...he's saying something more like don't call me 3posede or 5posede and that makes that song so much better!

    This whole explanation is true but i strongly believe it's about how they were treated as "rookies" or "newbies" in the kpop industry. Because in kpop or korea in general there's "superioity complex" if the artist came/debuted before u even just for a year u would be belittled by them (but thats changing now) BTS are more likely talking about their perspective as idols in the industry just starting up to build their dreams.

    Anyway, great video as always. My favorite duo reacting to my favorite artists!!!

    There is a new group who debuted 3 days ago and they are called "Ateez" and if you want to check them out, I recommend the song "Pirate King" they are so talented! They only have two songs out though which is understandable but, I think they will become quite big one day.
