BTS is the biggest group in the world, not just in Asia. They are the most streamed group of all time on Spotify, the 9th most streamed artist overall. And 1 of only 4 artists to have at least 100 songs with over 100 million streams each on Spotify (Drake, Bad Bunny, and Taylor Swift are the other 3). They were the best selling artists in the world in 2020 and 2021 and were number 2 for 2022. They've won hundreds of awards and have been nominated 5 times for a Grammy. They also hold numerous world records including the most streamed video in 24 hours on youtube with their music video for Butter that had 108.2 million views. BTS were also the first Asian artist to win Artist of the Year at the 2021 American Music Awards and were named Entertainer of the Year by Time Magazine in 2020. You've only just scratched the surface with BTS, they have over 300 songs of various genres and subject matter over the past 10 years they've been a group. And while yes technically BTS is a kpop group, kpop is more of an industry rather than a genre. Suga (a member of BTS) has said this about kpop "K-pop includes not just the music, but the clothes, the makeup, the choreography…all these elements I think sort of amalgamate together in a visual and auditory content package, that I think sets it apart from other music or maybe other genres so again, as I said, rather than approach K-pop as it’s own genre I think approaching it as this integration of different content would be better.” BTS have often said they don't want to limit their music to the term kpop, they are just BTS who love to make music and perform.

I think bby gang mag's video essay "BTS vs. K-pop" defines what 2K-pop" even is very good. It's a little complicated.
(I so love his video essays - but his channel Elliot Sang is also very good)
And than there is why BTS is different: "BTS: More than K-pop"

They have a very diverse discografy. This is not the only one video with more than 1 billion views they have. All of them write and produce most part of their songs. They are not just known for being great singers, rappers and dancers but also, their Korean lyrics are so deep, meaningful and inspirational. The message they send through their music resonates with the general public because they tackle depression, anxiety, mental health, discrimination, social expectations, self love, hard work, following your dreams etc. They have 3 English songs Dynamite, Butter and Permission To Dance which they released during the height of the global pandemic to bring positive vibe and hope to all their fans across the world. They have more than 300 songs as a group excluding their solo stuff. Their 3 English songs are not really that deep compared to their Korean songs. The seven members are all songwriters, producers and composers. Although they have in-house producers, they are actively involve in writing, composing and producing their songs from their debut album in 2013 to their solo stuff until now. Their music genres include Pop, Hip Hop, Latin Pop, EDM, R&B, Ballad. Name it, they have it. They can sell out stadiums across the world in less than an hour including the legendary Sofi Stadium, Allegiant Stadium, Rose Bowl STadium in the US and Wembley Stadium in England. Getting a BTS concert ticket is like hunger games. They have over one thousand awards as of March 2023 and still counting including Billboard Music Awards and American Music Awards. They are topping Spotify, Itunes, TH-cam and other music platforms. They have 28 Guinness World Record. Their fans called ARMY are not just screaming teenage girls but people who are in their 20s, 30s, 40s, 50s even 60s and 70s. I'm 48 years old and I'm an ARMY. FYI, they are the biggest group in the world. They are not your typical boy band. They are not just KPop. They are global. They paved the way for other Kpop groups to be known in the western music industry. Thanks for reacting to BTS. Name a boy group who made their country panic due to economic loss upon announcing their hiatus. None- it's just BTS because they contributed about 5 billion dollars to their economy every year. Listening to only one of their song won't really make you like their music but as I've said, they have wide range of genres. What kind of music do you like? BTS have 6 mvs with views more than 1B. They are not only huge in Asia but on global scale as well. You can see other reaction of their mv from all over the world and in multiple language.
Their fandom (called army) consists of all ages from kids, teenagers to elders in their 70s and 80s. They cover multiple genres with multiple topics as they themselves pretty much involved in their music making.
BTS consists of 3 rappers and 4 vocalists who debut in 2013. Currently they are focusing on solo project as they are going for military service. The eldest member already in the military since Dec last year and second member will follow shortly. The rest will enrol when it's time.
Even they are on solo schedule, all of them were well supported by their fans.
Other than mvs, they also have behind the scene video, dance practice, vacation video and their own variety show videos. So yeah...they have a lot of contents.

47-year-old Army from Norway here, can recommend giving the boys of BTS another listen as their 300 song portfolio is varied and inspiring.
They DO have the "traditional" pop tunes like DNA or the English language Dynamite or Butter, but the real goldmine is their forays into other genres and sounds. Would recommend Black Swan for the visuals, Blue and Grey or Magic Shop for some of their typical messages, Louder than Bombs or Run, BTS for a different sound, and anything by the rapline, more or less. :D

3:00 As a fellow Brit and massive BTS fan, I find it a bit depressing how little coverage K-pop gets here when it is so huge, so fun and so good. The K-pop music scene reminds me of pop music in the 80s. There is that same buzz and excitement and a similar mix of music, fashion and video as key elements, to which they have added choreography. (In the 80s this level of choreo was done by only a handful of artists and most of them shared the surname Jackson).

Hi from 54 yr old Army from UK, and thanks for your reaction. Please do continue and don't be put off by some Army's who get a bit sensitive at times. There is a lot of history over the years of people showing hatred and being anti BTS and A.R.M.Y. and people out there who are not genuine. We tend to get overprotective of these amazing young men because of it. Army's too have been disrespected as well, and of course, with a 90 mil strong fandom you'll also get some crazies! 😂 However the relationship between BTS and Army is very special and unusual, however we are very welcoming and really nice to those wanting to find out more about our boys. So if you continue you're in for a great ride, especially if you love great music and once down the rabbit hole you'll wonder how on earth you got there, but be very grateful you did! I won't repeat what others have already mentioned, I'm sure you get a bit of the picture by now. But know you're in the best place in the world, BTS have been likened to MJ and the Beatles for a reason, so hope you cover more BTS content, and we'll be here to support your journey! 👍👍 Some links and info to help below:
The best translations can be found at Doolsetbangtan: doolsetbangtan.wordpress.com/
For an explanation of their MV's Bookish Theory is a good source. And DKDKTV explanations given by a Korean are useful as we foreigners might miss cultural references etc. Very necessary with BTS reactions! Always watch the MV's to the end.
A great site for good quality Eng subs for BTS’s MV’s and especially the LIVES (content added regularly): Enjoy BTS More: th-cam.com/users/EnjoyBTSmorevideos
They also have various versions of their MV's and songs, from the official MV to remixes (B-sides done for Army, also excellent) and live performances. Dance videos for their choreography can be found at Bangtantv and behind the scenes videos. Just depends how far you want to go, there is a lot. The MV's have a storyline attached but that is better saved for a time when you might want to get to know the members more.

BTS has 350+ discography with massive number of credits, so much that one of the members is the highest credited artist in Korea (and youngest) with currently 212 credits and the rest of the members are not far behind. They have an insanely diverse discography with easily above 10 genres. Their core is hiphop and its essence lingers in a lot of the varied genres they do. Thereby creating a unique 'bts genre'. Particularly due to the importance they give to lyrics and their writing styles can often of bases of old school hiphop which thereby infuses into the various genres they do like r&b, Pop, Funk, electro Funk, edm, soul music, rock and emo, Latin Pop, Ballad, Trap, Urban, Alternative Rap, Boom Bap. Interestingly this is vague naming cause the number of subgenres of Pop and hiphop the include is wild.
But bts also doesn't stop experimenting. They began in 2013 and after 10 years they are now in a hiatus to serve in the mandatory military in Korea. They are taking turns in enlisting before which the members are doing their first official solo albums (before which the rappers have made numerous solo mixtapes over those 10 years and bts albums tend to have solo songs and unit songs along side tracks with all 7 members. Most of vocal lines previous solo experience comes from solos in bts albums and osts or collabs they did individually). Each members music is so vastly different and also expressing newer sides of them which quite often can be a transition from past lighter lyrics and sounds to darker themes and some the other way round. Speaking of lyrics, bts's main reason of popularity is their thorough introspection and capability to articulate it poetically. Their discography can roughly divided as revolting young boys in '2 cool 4 school' to adulting, youth life and struggles in 'The Most Beautiful Moment in Life' to Hermmen Hesse inspired 'Wings' to 'love yourself' series of albums, to 'map of the soul' inspired from Carl jung (a major name in the field of Psychology and Psychiatry), to self reflection and mental stance during pandemic in 'BE' album. Their music speaks of all the raw human emotions, struggles, essence, morality and social standards, taboos and sociopolitical aspects. So much that they have taken risks like calling out political happenings at a time in Korea when things were pretty vile such that you could be get blacklisted for speaking against mismanagement.
So many of us have gotten out of dire mental heath issues due to their own honest sharing of their experiences and comforting lyrics combined with those that give a reality check that really helps people feel less inhibitions to get help (am one of those, Clinically depressed that started taking over my physical health and now one medicines that is improving my life vastly!)

Well now that you’ve discovered BTS, welcome!! Yes with 1b+ views, they are a huge deal. But the popularity of BTS goes beyond their music (or in addition to their music, I should say, cuz their music is also stellar). They have been called “The Beatles of our generation” by western media since like 2018 because of their massive popularity all over the world and also their huge level of influence. You might be interested in their speeches at the United Nations. The UN has invited them 3 times because they know that when BTS speaks, millions of people will listen. They have an awesome underdog story, literally started from the bottom in kpop to dominating the whole world’s music industry. They were the Top Global Artist two years in a row, they have 28 Guiness world records and they are also the most awarded group of all time. I hope that you will react to more bts to discover for yourself. We’ve seen many lives changed because of them, so enjoy the journey 🤗

  • @loftyradish6972

Something that needs to be taken into account with a lot of BTS' music, is that it is a part of a story arc. DNA is the first part of a story. It talks about a destined love, one that feels perfect and wonderful. But the next part of that story is "Singularity" and "Fake love" which are about realising you have erased who you are in an attempt to be loved, and that what was in DNA was nothing but infatuation, a fake and unrealistic example of love, a "love" that is unsustainable and ultimately destroys a person. The last song is Epiphany, which is about realising you need to love yourself before you can truly love another.
I love this story because I see it playing out everywhere, and it is nice having a "love" song, that when put in the context of the story, shows how empty that love really is.

I'm in the U.S., and am older person, and I absolutely love these young, hard-working, talented men. If you'd like to learn about them, there are several good fan made intros, but the most popular these days is "An Introduction to BTS: The Bangtan 7". It's rather long, but worth the watch. There are other good ones by xCeleste, and a few others. I found BTS in May 2021, became official ARMY a few months later and still am. I have never fangirled over any group as much as I have BTS. BTS is a wonderful group of young men. Their singing and dancing is next level. They also have individual works that are incredibly special. Black Swan and ON are two of my favorite, but have many more. The individual members are now doing military service, but will be back in 2025. Welcome. Thanks for reaction to our guys. I'm 48 yo ARMY from FL.
Fun fact: BTS won the Newcomer Award in 2014 at a CHINESE award ceremony. They were even there to performed on stage too. They used to tour several cities in China. Of course this was before China banned all Korean music and dramas from being imported. That's probably why you haven't heard about them there now openly. Although there's a huge community underground that support our guys, I mean massive insane $$$ for merch and donation for birthday billboard displays, etc.
I'm sure you've got lots of recommendation/comments from fellow ARMYs already, so I won't write full book here. Just welcome to BTS World 💜. Have a great weekend !

I'm not entirely surprised that you hadn't heard of them. They believe in making music honestly and with integrity so they refuse to participate in "pay to play" culture. Because of that, at least in North America, their Korean music gets no radio play at all. Don't know how it works in China. They have grown organically and now focus on their millions of fans worldwide and not the corrupt music industry. Today, their member Jimin became the first solo South Korean artist to ever reach number 1 on the Billboard Hot 100. Again, with practically no radio play, just fan streams and downloads. I think you'd like the song; it's called Like Crazy. We are very proud of him and all of them. 10 years making music together. 💜

In 2021, BTS became the first group since The Beatles to have 6 number 1 songs on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in a single year. That's only one of the many, many records they've broken... including smashing tons of TH-cam records such as most viewers for a video debut, etc. DNA broke the record for most views in the first 24 hours (21 million views), which was then broken by them about a year later with IDOL (45 million views in 24 hours)... which they broke later with Dynamite (101 million views)...They are a phenomenon.

Because they are really everywhere these days, even non-kpop fans here in the boonies of North Carolina know who they are. So I find it interesting when I come across someone who hasn't heard of them. I imagine that you have heard or seen them somewhere but just haven't realized that you have. Anyway, welcome to BTS's world, we fans are called ARMY and we thank you for giving our beloved group a chance. We hope that you continue to learn, explore and understand why BTS is the biggest group with the biggest fandom in the world. But, if you don't want to become a fan, I suggest you turn back now and not do anything more. Because once you start and tumble down the rabbit hole into the BTS Universe, it is very hard not to love and respect these seven extremely talented men....you WILL be a fan! You've been warned!

I wish they would play BTS's music in clubs or on the radio, but they just won't no matter how big the song is. If it isn't in English, they won't play it. X.x
I'm surprised you found the lyrics odd for this song. This song is actually not something I prefer stylistically, but I started to love it first for the lyrics, which I found quite beautiful and poetic. The idea that your love is destined...something that intrinsically connects you to each other all the way down to your atoms, a love that spans life times. :)
BTS is The largest group in the world. Not just Asian, but any group. And one of the largest musical acts, group or otherwise. They draw fans of many ages, nationalities, and walks of life. :) I'm a 40-year-old English teacher from the US. I'd like to recommend the song Fake Love by BTS as it comes from the same album trilogy as DNA and is the next song is the sort of "story" the albums create.

Thanks for reacting to BTS ! I think they will surprise you on many, MANY levels !
They have, no lie, the widest range of music any artist have and hundreds of songs. That means, no matter what your genre is, you'll find songs you like and some you'll enjoy less. Anyways, as much as medias like to put groups in a box, BTS is no typical "boyband" and even in the Kpop industry, they're totally different. They're pioneers in some way and to these days, I haven't seen any artist that big being so normal out of stage. But most of all, they've been working very hard for a decade, literally starting from scratch in a company that was on the verge on bankruptcy only to have made this company one of the biggest economic sources in South Korea nowadays. There are 3 rappers and 4 singers. And on top of being amazing rappers, singers and dancers ; BTS members write, produce, take part in the artistic concepts, music videos, dance choreographies, ideas... Everything basically, in collaboration with their company staff and artists. They're really on a line of their own and I think you'll see that for yourself when you react to more. That being said, you're really perceptive on many levels, can't wait to see more of your reactions :)
Also, I think you should definitely react to the different fan-made guides about BTS. They'll put you on many informations about the group, the members, how they work and everything basically. Because above learning about their group history, these guides make you understand their music a lot more in some way. That was my case when I first became a fan (and I'm sure I'm not the only one). I guess learning about the background of each member, their background as a group and the way they work for their craft, makes you understand the music (and the artistry) in a much more complete way. The most complete (and amazingly made) guide is : "A Guide to BTS Members: The Bangtan 7" (by Taylor Mari). Hope you'll react to it ! In any case, enjoy the journey !!

There are messages in all of their music including words of truth addressing social injustices, bullying and women empowerment to name a few. Rarely do they sing or rap about love. They do have substance and why ARMY is so globally massive. Fans have discovered art, books, theater and foreign languages we would have never known and much in our own backyards.
