The (Expected) FAILURE of Kliff Kingsbury.

  • The Arizona Cardinals had a very busy Black Monday. The Cardinals fired Kliff Kingsbury after four seasons and just months after signing him to a contract extension through 2027. The Cardinals had a losing record under Kliff and only made the playoffs once. It wasn’t working. That wasn’t the only change in Arizona. General manager Steve Kiem decided to step away from his position to focus on his health.

    People don't really talk about how Steve Keim never got any draft class quite right. Most players never went beyond their rookie contract.

    • @t4d0W
      @t4d0W ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hilariously he got the QB right the second time (with flaws) but he whiffed miserably in talent/depth in key areas like the trenches. No surprise whenever I saw their O-line face against Donald and the Rams in key games, the latter would win out late in the game. The two LBs he took for traits high in the first round (SImmons at 8, Collins at 16) aren't exactly game changers like a Micah Parsons whose a beast at 12th. The WRs he took like Moore, Isabella and others were under utilized. Worse were the TEs which for some reason he kept collecting but were never as valuable in the offense. Then the FAs he signed were kind patch jobs to long term problems especially on defense. Old JJ Watt was still trying to carry a lackluster D-line.

    I tend to agree with your points overall, but honestly he wasn't the worst head coach. He just was outmatched especially as the 2nd half of the seasons hit and teams noticed trends in his attack. I think I'm probably going to be a bit kinder then most of your comments on the subject, but his Arizona teams never admittedly got significantly better through the draft. Moves like free agency helped but this was always a team riding hard on a couple talents both sides of the ball. Their loss against the Rams in the playoffs, where Kyler looked very out-matched and overwhelmed, I felt was a harbinger of the next season. I do think Kliff deserves the responsibility for why those teams tended to falter later in the season as it showed an inability to adjust so don't get me wrong, but I do think they could've gotten more assistance for his regime.

    • @jonathancarrillo7739
      @jonathancarrillo7739 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Agreed his lack of adjustment and in-game awareness really cost the cardinals down the stretch. Had some creative offensive play calling in the beginning but later seasons turned weirdly conservative. I think he was trying to avoid being a full blown college offense but never quite combined his experience with the pro game.

    • @Gungho73
      @Gungho73 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@jonathancarrillo7739 You do wonder if that becomes something we hear about later like with Dennis Erickson in Seattle. Majority reason Erickson got the job he did there was due to his offensive innovation in college; he was profusely under the impression those couldn't work in the pros. So he just simply never tried things like sweeps with Galloway because he was trying to meet the NFL standard.
      A lot of coaches in NFL history, many far worse performing then Kingsbury, get intimidated by the league in that fashion. Wouldn't shock me me if that's partialy the case here.

    With the exception of this season spiraling wildly out of Kliff’s control, how is his tenure with Arizona dubbed a “failure?” Each season showed clear progress, which included the Cardinals first playoff appearance since what, 2015? Not to mention, they earned HISTORIC ROAD WINS against their division rivals in what was easily the toughest division in the NFL in 2021.
    Please tell me what head coach could have succeeded in Arizona this season considering everything that was thrown at Kliff? This season was lost before it even got started. With Hopkins out, Kyler Murray’s ridiculous contract, to an eventual depleted roster, no depth of talent, and just all around bad luck.
    And yet, Kliff found a way to prepare three different backup QB’s so they could actually be somewhat competitive. David Blough was rolling better than Murray was all season-and he literally started a week after getting signed to the team. What’s more telling is that his players played their hearts out to the end.
    So, if you want to call this season a failure, then I’d completely agree. But it’s not a failure because of Kliff. This is a pretty popular narrative to go after him because a) he’s the head coach, and it comes with the territory, but mostly it’s b) he’s a good-looking dude that everyone thinks reeks of privilege. While the latter may be somewhat true in the NFL’s hiring practices, he definitely pours every ounce of sweat and energy he has into his job. Say what you will about his coaching and his in-game decisions, but this guy works harder than most and there is zero question that he gave it his all.
    In the meantime, I’ll just sit back and watch Kyler Murray’s ego take over the franchise as he gets a carousel of coaches fired and teammates traded. Arizona is not a winning franchise, and they never will be as long as their current owner is running the table.

    • @johndoyle3232
      @johndoyle3232 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      “Watch Murray’s ego take over the franchise” and then you proceeded to say “Arizona is not a winning franchise” which one is it?? The year before Kyler got drafted, they went 3-13 with some of the worst offensive statistics of all time. I really don’t think Kyler is affecting the least successful nfl organization of all time that poorly. If anything, he’s done more good than bad

    You judge Kingsbury as a failure due to the Cardinals' record and his college record. He coached at a bottom Big 12 team. Nobody has had a good record at Texas Tech. Then he is asked to win at Arizona where a 5'8" tall quarterback earns 23% of the team's salary cap. In the past 46 years, only 7% of Cardinals coaches had a winning record (Arians). 93% had a losing record. Kingsbury is not the problem. If I owned an NFL team, he could coach for me.

    It’s plain and simple. The owner should be fired - he made a terrible hire and should take complete responsibility. Cliff seemed to be in over his ski’s and unable to inspire the team. He is a very good QB coach and could eventually be a good head coach with more experience and proof. I think he did his best but just wasn’t suited for the role at this point. The owner… he needs to publicly say that he doesn’t know how to hire. This team needs a strong experienced leader. If they stay healthy - within 2 years could compete for a run at a superbowl

    I thought Kliff was okay. In his 2ed, 3rd, and even this year Kylers health screwed him over. Really the whole teams health this year sucked. Sure he may of been a little to aggressive on 4th but statistically that’s what you should do. Kyler also didn’t look to good this year and I think Kliff had nothing to do with it. The o line sucked and his best wide out was out. As for Kliffs teams at tech I mean not many people win at Texas tech.

He forced Az's hand to not get a offensive coordinator and he constantly got lost on the clock, he was listed as being the top 10 statistacally worst head coaches as an overall career with a team due to his incompetence. We miraculously won games and blew winnable ones all year on terrible playcalling. Don't even say it was health this year when last season we had a healthy squad that collapsed in on itself as kliff didn't re adjust his playbook.
