Hey all you bari ukesters out there. If you want to get rid of the muddy sound and the scratch you may want to try the tuning I discovered . First purchase a set of Aquila gCEA strings for baritone uke. After attaching and stretching them, tune them to the customary gCEA pitch then drop the pitch a whole tone to fBb,DG. This G minor tuning is the equivalent of pinching a capo on the third string of a guitar in standard tuning. It is also the tuning used by lutenists playing the Renaissance lute. All the music you play can be played with this tuning, which has the advantage of slightly lowering the string tension as well. The strings don't bottom out on the higher frets either.

This is called Contra tuning
Contra tuning strings are easy to get From a standard Classical Guitar set of strings use the 4 thickest strings tuned to Contra GCEA.
Also to get less squeak use polished or flatwound Classical Guitar strings.

I had the same problem with muddiness when I installed low octave GCEA strings on my vintage Harmony baritone. The use of a pic and playing closer to the bridge were great tips!

Thanks so much! Seriously, I'd already decided to get a baritone ukulele and I was deciding to get GCEA strings for it. I have a wonderful Breedlove guitar so why would I want a baritone ukulele with the same tuning minus two strings and all of that amazing tone and volume? So I really wanted to hear a baritone ukulele with standard GCEA tuning! Plus I've learned a lot ukulele chords and I'm having so much fun singing and playing uke!!! Just want to continue that. Playing ukulele has drastically improved my guitar playing.

I mistakenly ordered the Guadalupe regular gCEA instead of the octave lower ones, but went ahead and strung them on my old Silvertone Bari. Have to say they were the shortest strings I've ever used. I could barely make it around the C and E tuners. I ordered the octave lower ones and hope they are at least a little longer. The outer windings don't go clear to the end of some of the strings either.

No worries Jim - I hope the low octaves will work. They are meant for baritone Ukes, so they should go the distance. Hope you dig them when you finally get them strung up :)

I'd want the Low G but I'd want the usual CEA strings on my dream Baritone.
That's possible - I believe they make "long scale" GCEA strings for baritone Ukes!
Always tuned dgbe on the baritone ukelele never considered gcea. Kind of a cool concept.
I ordered some of these strings and noticed they also have the lower octave set for dgbe, for what it's worth....

These are Guadalupe strings made by hand in East Los Angels, California. You can also order directly from them. They are good quality but the wound aspect didn't work for my style of playing. Very squeaky :)
Yes indeed! They do take a sensitive release when plucking them...one of the points I highlighted later on. They have a nice low range...quite "un-ukulele-like" when it's that low!
Ordered two sets of Baritone Low GCEA (Full octave lower) from Mainland Ukes to check out on an Oscar Schmidt OU52
Here is what I measured for the diameter gauges (inches): A - .0445 E - 0305 C - .0345 G - .0425
The G string barely fits in the nut slot and the A string doesn't and is riding high over the fretboard (Jus' Press as Led says :)
As someone else mentioned, they are just long enough with two inches to spare
Oh boy...that sounds like a bit of a headache! They probably only fit into baritone Ukes’s of a certain nut width? Sorry to hear of the trouble...hope they work out for you to play them!

Interesting tuning on the bari. Have you tried tuning with a high G set of long ukulele (like those on a tenor) or classical strings but only lower the G string one octave lower? It will sound just like a ukulele but with the low G string which sounds very good. Then you would not have that muddy sound you talk about. Enjoyed the video. Thanks...
No, I haven't tried those options...there are long scale CGEA strings for baritones...Thanks Franko!

I also have a baritone tuned this way. I only like to pick mostly with this setup. Strumming is too muddy as I think you said.

Great arrangement. Always informative. One suggestion though, can you move back from the camera so that both hands show? Some of those picking runs would be good to show in a tutorial.

Awesome Beautiful! I really enjoy recreating tunes on my Bari Uke! I also use some different strumming techniques to define the low sounds and my long thumbnail helps out too! :)

This was almost exactly what I was looking for in terms of lower octave strings. I noticed you were playing with low G instead of hi G. I prefer standard high G tuning but one octave lower all around. In order to get that I have to play around with the order of the DGBE strings still.

I noticed that Russian song in there. Ochi Cheryne? Dark Eyes, is that right? I'm not a Bob Marley fan but you always seem to make his songs more melodic and artistic. Almost etheral in this case!
A few obsrvations and questions. I have 2 baritone ukes and they are tuned DGBE. Like the last 4 on a guitar. I have never heard of this tuning. I've seen people do re-entrant tuning on a DGBE baritone but this is totally new.
Why would someone choose to do this? So they didn't have to learn "new" chords or kind of transpose in your head? (i.E. GCEA's C chord equals DGBE's G.). Obviously it's a more popular baritone tuning than I thought because they make strings for it. Only my D and G strings are wound.
Which brings me to ANOTHER question. Does anyone make a Low G (for GCEA ukes) that is NOT wound? I'm kind of with you on the "scratchy" sound of wound strings. Maybe Mainland caries such strings. Thank you again for all that you give us in your videos.
Ken Middleton's Living Water Strings
There are several unwound low G sets available these days as that tuning increases in popularity. I personally use the GHS Chee and Maisel curated set but there are also sets from Fremont, Aquila, Worth, Living Water and more. Several companies also have individual low G’s available. I also tried Glen Rose’s trick of rearranging a high G set by string thickness to give myself a low G set on my baritone. I really liked it and used it for a couple of years before going back to the standard low D baritone tuning. I’m not so fond of the low D anymore so I think I’ll go back to the low G. Just to clarify, I mostly play low G tenors - the baritone is a fun occasional instrument. I also still play guitar (where I started). Hope that helps.

So is this just the same tuning as a guitar then? I thought I read somewhere that the bari tuning is up one octave from a guitar (top 4 strings only of course). Sounds like for this tuning you need different strings?

Hmmmmmmm standard tuning for the baritone ukulele is DGBE, same as guitar but without the low E and A strings.
I thought baritones were tuned DGBE not GCEA. But I wonder if these strings will work with a tenor uke, or if the nut will need to be altered to accommodate?Have you ever tuned a tenor with these lower octave strings if a link or review would be nice.
Fremont makes special tenor strings that are a "high D baritone tuning". It's a nice effect: not quite an uke, not a guitar. It feels like it's its own thing, probably like the octave uke in the video here.

Google their site. They still sell it. I did the math and am going to try to build a cheaper set. All wound strings is probably the best way to do it.
4 years ago I went to various so called uke and guitar experts asking about low great for baritone ukulele all said neck length was the issue

Yes, for this set they are. It makes for a little bit of a swishy sound when you finger pic but the deep tone is so pleasing to play with 🤙
@@UkuleleZen wish i had found your video earlier! The local ukulele shop says they can set my tenor guitar up as an octave ukulele. They also suggested 4 wound strings. I wonder if the steel strings will make a difference

I may be a total beginner to the ukulele, (playing the Tenor and Baritone uke for 10 months now), but even I know, that it is sacrilege and extremely cringey to take the beautiful Baritone with its perfect and natural DGBE tuning and bastardize it into a GCEA Tenor/Concert/Soprano tuned instrument. Why would anyone do that? That's like tuning and modifying an acoustic guitar to GCEA Ukulele tuning or taking a orchestra silver flute and modifying it so it sounds and plays like a Tin Whistle. If your going to play the Baritone Uke, play the Baritone Uke as is, if you only want to play in GCEA tuning, then stick with a Tenor, a concert or a Soprano Ukulele as that is what they are designed to play in. No Woman, No Cry sounds much better in DGBE tuning anyway.
The lowest note is about the same between them and maintains the reentrant tuning. For beginners, you can use regular ukulele learning resources as well. Other people claim DGBE baritone uke is a neutered guitar with no purpose. I say if you like it, do it.
@@bobjenkins3rd I don’t agree. I don’t like or play using reentrant tuning so my Tenors all have low G strings and to me sound far better. Yes, people can do whatever they like in terms of tuning their instruments, but there are many out there that say that when you tune a Baritone to GCEA that it will be a bit off sounding and unnatural with regards to the intonation. I am also not a fan of those that put the baby Baritone strings on a Tenor or Concert Ukulele, unless they are just trying it to see if they are interested in getting a Baritone Uke. I still say the magic and originality of the Baritone and what makes it sound so incredible is its natural DGBE tuning. Nobody wants a dog that meows or a cat that barks
