Arc thrower is absolutely amazing against the squids. It WILL stun the tripods and stop them from shooting their eye beams, and will kill them quickly enough after that if you have access to their face

Why does it feel like my crossbow doesn’t damage the ships shields, I’ll fire an entire mag and it’ll take no damage

From what I've seen/read the shields are resistant to explosive damage. If you're talking about at around 1:47, K3 and A2 were firing on the ship from a bit off to the side that dropped the shields!
