The Lost Cinemas of Dublin City Centre - a walk around the City remembering some sites and discovering others.
Another highlight of the day was randomly striking up conversations with curious onlookers as I shot the locations - the elderly gentleman on Francis street was a treasure trove of information on the Tivoli.

All Ireland is being demoished and that's an even bigger crime, along with our culture, religion, and customs. The tragic part is that it is our 'own' that are doing it for the EU unelected.

About the Adelphi: in the 1960s it was used as a concert hall for the visit by the great pianist Artur Rubinstein. He played Schubert's last sonata. At the end of the 1st movement, the lights came on and the usherettes came in selling ice creams! Rubinstein was not happy. Apparently he coasted the rest of the performance.

      Interesting, I didn't know that.
In the projection room there was a framed photo of the Beatles on stage in 1963. Before the cinema closed, it was a scramble to see who'd get it. I didn't :)

Thank you for this brilliant video. I can vouch for the Adelphi screen being fantastic. The last film I saw there was U2's Rattle And Hum.
My father was a lighting designer and supplied lots of these places with spotlights. I can remember going with him sometimes in the 1970s and 80s. Great memories.

4.51..the regent cinema findlater place..was wondering for years about that place because I was in it when they turned it into a bar/nightclub..it was called the Back Gate..it was funny because the slope down to the small dance floor was actually where the seats where..like this place was tiny for it being previously a cinema when I knew it had previously been, never knew the name though lol

Fascinating. I didn't realise there were so many cinemas in Dublin in the past. I visited the Screen, the Ambassador and the Irish Film Theatre, Earlsfort Terrace where I saw my first 'art house' movie, 'Days of Heaven'. Despite the destruction of parts of O'Connell Street, it is still a magnificent street that is full of historical significance. Very informative and good choice of music.

Cinemas was indeed a great part of lives once real escape from reality into a world of dreams. The Cinemas themselves was also themselves dream palaces to sit in and romances made while there.! Sadly now gone because of change in lifestyles and with TV and modern day technology. Remembering those once fine places of joy here on this video does indeed hark back to times we had then and there fantasies we saw on-screen with the movie stars of yesterday. Fine buildings gone forever ! Nothing today can or will replace them now and gone into memory but some should have been saved for future generations to not show how we once entertained and those elaborate places they was once. Dublin has suffered those loss like other big cities have and we can only hope those that are left behind will survive to tell the tale.!!

I remember showing Aliens to 20/30 people per screening. Asking people locally why wouldn't they go see it, their reply was 'we'll wait for it on video'. When Europe 'caught up' with the US release dates and the films were opening same date everywhere that did bring people back to the cinema. And the experience as a whole, screen/sound couldn't be matched at home.

I was in all of them that were still open from the 1950's and the Adelphi was my favourite screen, too. Saw Mutiny on the Bounty in Ultra Panavision 70 there.
One of my uncles was a projectionist in the Regal. The Cinerama in Talbot St. was great except for the trains rumbling over the roof!

Brilliant history. I was with a drama group (Parnassus Arts Group) that used the Eblana aall thorugh the 80's. We also used the Academy on Pearse St as a theatre venue for a few years towards the end of the 1980s. The cinema screen was still intact on the stage and we had to roll under before making a stage entrance. Worse still, because it wasn't set up as a theatre, there was no back stage area and, consequently, no toilets. So, if we were in a long play, it would have been quite the ordeal!!

Left Dublin 12 years ago or so.
Went to see at The Screen in Hawkins Street ‘Downfall’, ‘Moulin Rouge’, ‘Amélie Poulain’, among others.
I remember a pigeon trapped inside the lobby that I safely ‘scared’ and led back outside by opening more doors.
I smoked many cigarettes by Mr Screen, waiting for the right times to get in. :)
