I remember you mentioned Frances at the end of one of your Mr Bungle videos and is the only reason I even discovered Mars Volta in the first place. It’s only a slight exaggeration when I say that listening to Mars Volta has changed my life.

I saw them in LA this most recent tour. The crowd was horrible but it was easily the BEST CONCERT IVE EVER SEEN. I've been to a ton of shows this year (GY!BE, Sigur Ros, Bjork, Hiatus Kaiyote and Flying Lotus (!), and more) but I was NOT expecting TMV to put on such a fantastic show. That's the most energy and happiness I've ever felt by a live music show in my life. Crowd was horrible but I didn't even care, the music was just so good. Best band ever, and Frances The Mute is definitely in my top 5 albums of all time. Amazing video, thanks for uploading man.

I discovered The Mars Volta about 8 months ago through this album, I found it at a thrift store having only heard "The Widow" previously, and was like 'fuck it, why not'
I did not get what I expected
Anyway TMV is probably my 4th favorite band now

I used to dance along to Cassandra and the raw bark part suggests that it's time to move the pelvis, progressively towards sexual movements. It's not just the lyrics, everything in the music is going to culminate with an orgasm more clearly described by the guitar.

As for the ending of The Widow, I think it's alluding to drowning ("Pale runs the ghost/Then I'm swollen on the shore"), and those disjointed keys are a musical soundscape of being trapped by the water, unable to break free. Granted, I also used to think that the wild sax solo at the end of Cassandra Gemini was supposed to be Cassandra being r@þəð, so what do I know?

I think Frances the Mute is meant to be a sort of no context spoiler right at the start, which would be filled in as you go
Which maybe also explains why they weren't *that* miffed to lose it

I’ve always thought that the title track was placed during the atmospheric parts of cassandra. Like while Cygnus is having this drugged or un drugged epiphany he hears a phone ringing as a hallucination that reminds him of what he heard from miranda, or hearing the spirit of Frances

I really like this album as well. It came out very close to when I was born, and my dad would always play it when I was little. Of course I never thought about there being a story, but I always loved L'Via L'Viaquez, and I just drove close to 9 hours to Columbus, OH to see them (and got lucky enough to be by the stage near Omar). Thanks for the explanation.

I found The Mars Volta through the song Tetragrammaton in 2006 and went through the albums, and ever since I mantain that Cassandra Gemini is Omar's Magnum Opus and Frances The Mute is the best album of all time for me. I've been listening to Pink Floyd, Rush, Throbbing Gristle and other references, but this album just doesn't get out of my mind.

I can't avoid write everything I think about the album.
I consider Frances The Mute the fifth best album of all time, in my opinion it is surpassed by Physical Graffiti and Led Zeppelin IV by Led Zeppelin (obviously), Five Peace Band Live by Chick Corea & John McLaughlin and Romantic Warrior by Return To Forever. The 5 albums that I mentioned (and adding to the complete soundtracks of Halo and The Lord of the Rings), are not only the compositions that have transmitted the most feelings and emotions to me, and continue to transmit when listening to them, they are also the works that best I was completely understood, which I feel should not be considered music, but something more than being named eighth wonders. I think that no praise, no acclamation by everyone, not even the best possible place that is given to them, will do them justice, because they are so perfect in every way...
I still remember the first time I wanted to get into The Mars Volta, when I first heard Frances The Mute, and when I finished doing it, what was my final verdict on doing it? That the only thing I liked was the cover, because the rest was the weirdest and most pretentious shit I had ever heard in my life, I belittled it, and everything related to the band, I left it in oblivion for a while. By the time I decided to give the band another shot, the album itself (and I'm honest, I did it to kill time, I'm thank you for doing it), and finished listening to it again, I felt like I had gotten hooked on it. little, and then I wondered, man, or am I really the problem? Because, what I still hadn't been able to understand at that time with FTM, is that I was dealing with a very different work from what I always used to listen to, something more than a simple album, so when I decided to listen to it again, I said to myself, pay more attention to the album, take into account everything it is offering you, let yourself be embraced by that strange and unique magic that you are barely getting to know, its spirituality, let yourself be carried away by all its qualities, its atmosphere, its lyrics, its rhythm, its aggressiveness, its sinister, calm, crazy, sad and epic tone, and then you can more comfortably give your verdict, because little by little I was realizing all those details for each blessed second that passed when each glorious song sounded, I was realizing that everything was beginning to make sense, as if it had been about having managed to transcend into another reality. Seriously, in all my years of life, had I found something that I didn't know was part of my life and I was? scorning unfairly? There came a time when I couldn't stop listening to the album without resting, appreciating everything about it more and more, I even got to study it, and discover its architecture and melodic engineering behind it, study it again, analyze it, I no longer care. I could get it out of my head, I couldn't help not thinking about it, humming the lyrics and the melody... By this point I was already completely sorry for not having misjudged it from the beginning, for not having understood it, each new Playing it is like a new experience for me, a new satisfying journey, and for me not every album manages to do that, with FTM I found solace, I found a part of me that will never go away, I found everything I like of music, will always have a place in my heart.
If I had to keep only 2 The Mars Volta songs, they would be without a doubt Cygnus... Vismund Cygnus & Cassandra Gemini, as well as Kashmir, Stargazer and Achilles Last Stand, are the songs with which I show my inner self.

Funny, I was at that show and I also flew to Dallas that day but when I got to the airport I realized the cheaper ticket I bought was for a different month so I had to blow another $250 to get there.
I've seen Volta and Omar many times so I felt underwhelmed by this show, mainly because the drummer was just not as stunning as any of their drummers. I did think Cedric performed better than any other time I've seen him. His voice is way more controlled these days.

The ringing in the opening of Frances the Mute is the sound of altar bells, albeit with a echoing distortion applied to them. To me it conjures up the visual of a traditional Catholic mass, and each time the altar bell rings we see a snippet of Frances's awful life and the true nature of the perverted clergy that lies beneath the outwardly sacred public façade put on by the church.
