It's been 10 years, I keep on coming to this video and still thinking this is probably the best drum solo I've heard in my life. Giuliana is an absolute beast.
He lives inside quantization more. Purdie lives in groove.. not that I prefer one or the other.. just Mark is NOT groove, he's more the Bach of push pull

I get bored of drummers who only have technique. Mark is truly an inspiration to me because he really has originality, energy, groove and can make a small kit go a long way. Was a real pleasure to meet him some years ago and especially to find he's a nice guy and doesn't let his amazing talent go to his head. He is by far my favorite drummer.
Agree 100%. He's also incredibly versatile. He crushes grooves like this, and can turn around and nail jazz to the wall. His work on Gently Disturbed with Avishai Cohen is my favorite from him.
Mark is the first drummer (known/visible) that brought the tradition to service the modernity.. he brought EDM time signatures to Jazz trio (and more)//
My reply couldn't be later, but Squarepusher did some of his songs live with a band under Shobaleader One, they did A Journey to Reedham around the 6 min mark which is heavy on the drums, you might enjoy it th-cam.com/video/d-j_D-O1vwM/w-d-xo.html
I love how.... it's 2022....and here is this guy....playing beautifully...and playing things that have never been played before on a simple little drum kit. It's very inspiring.
Found this dude through Avashai Cohen's work. I wanted to see where jazz drumming is headed and who's leading the way. This guy is in the leading edge. Awesome.
Would love to buy Mark Guiliana's albums now, not just his Solo albums but his work with Donny McCaslin as well. Myself too, David Bowie made me take great interest in Mark's drumming. Now I am hooked as a new fan!
Ever since I heard this man play on BLACKSTAR? I just had to see just how good Mark Guiliana was? I loved his work on BLACKSTAR but wanted to see more? Thank u David Bowie R I.P., Mark Guiliana is just fantastic!
I think his spirit animal is some sort of serpent; the way he whips out at the kit in short powerful bursts but also manages to maintain and hold back sometimes is wicked.
It feels inspired by Go Ahead John with Jack DeJohnette's drumming and Teo Macero's studio wizardry on Miles Davis' Big Fun album-a pretty unpopular album during the cocaine-fueled Disco era of the 1970s, but pretty bad-ass 50 years later.
I have giving Mark Guiliana money for master classes and albums, but I feel like I could send him more money for how many times I come back to this video for inspiration. Love it.
Whos that guy on bass? Or whatever that is lol, and what kind of overdrive is he using? Or does he have a midi pickup? Whatever it is, and whoever he is, I dig it!

I’ve Just opened TH-cam to write totally the same comment
But you’ve done that 😂
Same here, but approximately 3 years for me
Mark Guiliana proves we have no reason to fear drum machines.
Matt Larghi he is a machine , not In a negative way ;)
Drum machines have reason to fear Mark Guiliana.
This dude gets a lot of mileage from just bass drum, hats and snare. Amazing.
The man lives inside the groove. Completely owns all time and space. MARK GUILIANA IS THE DOCTOR WHO OF MUSIC.

One of my absolutely favourite drum solos of all time. Love it so much!

Whatever space of dead air tries to sneak it's way into his playing, he's already anticipated it and filling in the gaps like a molecule.
Five years later is still awesome, does not go out of style !!
Found this dude through Avashai Cohen's work. I wanted to see where jazz drumming is headed and who's leading the way. This guy is in the leading edge. Awesome.
He's a lucky fellow Cohen. David Dor is in the same league.
I've watched this so many times. If I could only have half the amount of talent Mark does O_O Thanks for the post!
wmdrums stop watching and start practicing
One of best ways to learn is to listen :)
I got hooked now onto this kinda drumming. Thanks Mark...Keep it going.
deadly precise. So mechanical yet round and rolling. He becomes better and better! Unbelievable!
groove and technique in perfection
This is the NU-JAZZ Mark is cuttin up time like a scientist!
So refreshing to see creative and conceptual drumming over mindless posturing

He has this amazing appearance on the album towards the center of everything, you should take a look at that
+Max Sergeant Just ordered HEERNT-LOCKED IN A BASEMENT on Amazon so I am looking forward
to hearing the cd.
+John Kaufmann yeah man, they're all good records. Enjoy!😉

Superb, simply out of this world....this is pure creativity in drumming.
Mark and Jojo are my two top drummers , groove and originality

Великолепно!А ведь это по сути рабочий о том!Только понимая джаз можно так реализоваться!Браво!❤
inbelievable
he is the one and only. killer drum
Makes my head hurt in the best way possible.
Reminds me of Chris Coleman in the way he chooses to use metric modulation, and beat displacement.Utterly amazing.
Craziest drumming I've heard in a while.
I'm sure he's actually been created by Japanese engineerzzzzz
jajajjajajajajjajajjajajaj
Bowie brought me here. Thank you David
yep, I came from Bowie too :')
I dig Mark's drumming style!
It's like, "Oh yeah, check this out!"
😎👉 🥁 🎯
It's strange not seeing this in black and white with comically large hi-hats
Incredible.
Chris Dave is the King of this style.
Mark is the best !
No doubt, he's in Groovesville.
i'm having seizures, i might as well make art!
awesome. unique style.
I think his spirit animal is some sort of serpent; the way he whips out at the kit in short powerful bursts but also manages to maintain and hold back sometimes is wicked.
Yeah Mark! Great stuff!
That maple custom snare sounds awesome!
Awesome.
don´t know how many times i have seen this solo... But... When i don´t wan´t to practice, when i wan´t to, and just for pleasure
Hats off. Snares on...
OK. That was awesome.
2:15 best part. Like.... "what now?.... okay, whatever"
He utilizes many ideas in place of many drums. He's always interesting.

I could add Jason Linder to the payroll, too, since he is holding the line down for Mark to shine.
@@jmfs3497 Yes this is absolutely ridiculous
This Kat has so much command when he plays!!!
Wow!
wicked. many thanks
incredible,me like it!
perfect internal clock
Now vs Now is the only contemporary fusion band I listen to. They take it to a completely different level altogether
my. gawd.
This drum solo is as long, if not longer, than most pop songs.
drumming machine
awesome
REALLY COOOOOOL! And yes! No danger that any drum machine can redo this!
dammmm its goooodddddd
WTF man! Awesome!
class.
why the fuck are there 36 down thumbs...you people man, christ.
Mark is the man and thats that. Micro X-hat and all...
Practice. Practice and more Practice. Rudimental baby.
I think his brilliance is not even in the notes he plays, but in the ones he skips!!
Well said!
This is what a panic attack sounds like.
Ninja. Jeez. Wow.
👍👍👍👍🎶
that small hat gives the ping pong ball sound :)
This guy is a genius!!! Kind of robot moves without being square... That's whassup!!!
Best
jazz drumming --> IDM --> IDJ
0:34 snare tweak 🥺
yoda-level

Fresh is the word
Hi Drew! :D
Glitch Drums YaY!
How is he doing this?
📀📀📀📀
Those who don't understand ghost notes think he's a bad fidgeter. XD But gosh dang those ghost notes!
What is this song and group?
"super hihat master :o " - zyk
he can get away with saying anything anywhere with that phrasing
whats the small hihat/stack?
max stax 10" or something else?
Do you know what stax you use?
Any idea what hihat might that be?
Anyone know his tuning and muffling on the kick? I hear the same low end "woof" that he has in Bowie's "Black Star"
my educated guess is a yamaha sub-kick but I'm not sure
Thank you Vincent. Have you heard his sound on Bowie's "Black Star"?
They did helium dirty
what track is this? or from what record is it?
whats the cymbal set up hes using at .40 sec?
