    Today I'm really depressed due to quarantine, being unemployed since March due to covid-19, the racial injustices and tensions in this country, and going through a recent breakup. And crippling PTSD. 💔 Watching your video has brightened up my day; you have no idea how inspiring you are. To see another black girl in her twenties going through the motions of life, and being real about them, rather than sugarcoating or flexing, is so affirming. I am so relieved to hear that I'm not the only one struggling through young adulthood. I am 25, and struggle with this sense of failure and this fear of wasting my youth. 😩😩 2018 and 2019 were probably the worst years of my life also, even worse than 2020. I also neglected my hair by wearing braids/Marley twists all the time, and was usually too stressed to even think about caring for my hair. Thank you for this video, thank you for being you. You have no idea who you are helping and inspiring without even realizing it. ❤️❤️❤️🦄 And btw, you are gorgeous and beyond adorable!! 🦄😍✨

      @atbprincess much of what your said spoke to my soul. I’m 28 and the anxiety of screwing up your youth and at the same time feeling like you’re making regrettable mistakes is intense. In my experience my mid 20s were marked by losing both parents and heaps of responsibilities changing. But with therapy and a lot of work, I got through them. What I’m saying is It can get better even when it seems like it never will. Reach out to your support system and rely on them, telling them what you need specifically and be open to the changes that happen. Wishing you best of luck on your journey

    This really opened up an old wound. I didn't appreciate my hair when it was at its "full glory", I bleached it, cut it, had manipulative styles, and to this day, it's not recovered to its fullest. But I am more forgiving towards my hair now, I have a strict routine, I moisturize it, massage it, give it words of affirmation. You truly don't know what you've lost until its gone. Thank you StarPuppy for shedding some light on this.

    I love that you stress that healthy hair can only be achieved through a healthy mindset and healthy relationships with those around you and yourself. A lot of natural hair content creators only focus on products on the hair, which can lead to members of their audience feeling inadequate, confused, and frustrated that their hair isn't thriving.

      It's total self care. My hair grew the most when I did the least with it, but had a protein rich diet and slept well. Didn't overextend myself or be in the company of draining people.

      Also can lead to product junkieism which can be a chronic and contagious condition in the natural hair community. There’s a stage I went through with my hair where I was filling the frustration I felt about my ability to take care of my hair, my hair’s length, health, thickness; with buying a variety of hair products. And I completely agree, taking care of your hair, is much more holistic than we like to admit.

    • @uyaiumoren2030
      @uyaiumoren2030 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I agree to some extent about products but a product formulation can affect your hair badly or for the better. For a long time, petrolatum has had a bad rep for hair and silicones but for me, it works for my dry hair and seals in moisture. So I would say experiment and discover what works for you and take proper care of your hair.For 4c hair with finer texture do not use straight up petrolatum to seal look for petrolatum in a light cream form to use, it could be your favourite body lotion

    • @Siberius-
      @Siberius- 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      That can be the case, but that is not always the case (since you mentioned that it "can only be achieved through"). It can be achieved for certain people, regardless of having an unhealthy mindset, not having healthy relationships, or even not having a very healthy lifestyle etc. Maybe their hair would be even better, sure, but both are still in the healthy category.
      These things can lead to not taking care of ones hair with products and so on, but that's about the products and routines and stuff again.
      Just to reiterate, I didn't apply this to all people.

      The silk cap helps protect our hair breakage & damage under the wig.

      Isn’t that obvious tho? Like you breathe through your scalp as well and it seems logical to think that if you are going to cover your entire scalp preventing it from breathing properly you are going to have to take extra steps to take care of your hair... like idk how y’all got the idea that wearing wigs does good to your hair when it only makes it worse, like you aren’t supposed to cover your head every single day... it’s meant to be free and move around and breathe, like y’all seem really stupid sometimes lmao

    I wore wigs excessively for 2-3 years. I just find them much easier then having to do my hair every week. It was actually counterproductive bc my hair started to break off along my hairline and nape bc of the braids I was putting under the wigs. I have a video on my channel about this! Lol. And even tho wigs are a great protective style you have to be careful of how you manage your hair underneath and make sure the braids aren’t causing tension.

    Aww, hearing your story about your hair reminds me of mine. My mistake is I got it straightened after being natural for 5 years and then it was breaking off. Then went to wigs in 2018-2019 but went to a stylist who yank and put heat in my hair just to braid it to install the wig. What killed it was box braids on top of that. My hair was damage and I slowly been cutting it off. But the crown area is where there’s the most breakage but it’s closer to the root. I did considered shaving my hair off.
    My hair has regain some thickness and returning to its natural curl pattern however it’s not as full like it was a few years ago. I have CCCA (Alopecia) too which is inflammation in the scalp. And my hair sheds a lot too. I noticed thinning spots which I never had before. So I feel your pain.
    I started washing my hair once a week instead of every 3 weeks, and use peppermint oil with my conditioner to help with blood circulation. I deep condition my hair every 2 weeks. My hair seems to be shedding less now that I’m giving it more care. I’ve been doing this for several months now. I hope your hair will continue to improve as well.

Last year I attempted to take better care of it. I started using Devacurl deep conditioner once a week. Ironically that product did more damage than good. So now my hair is in recovery.

      Halfricenne -I figured that out the hard way. I can’t use fenugreek, for that reason. I recommend, introducing them gradually and hair journaling. I use teas, TEA BAGS 😂, because, if they don’t work for my hair, I can still drink them, because, no one wants to waste money (especially since I’m a recovering product junkie).

      Commenting in case anyone updates their results with Ayurveda. I’m using it too, and my hair is significantly healthier and is growing well. but I’ve been leaving my hair alone and my hair routine has been on 💯. Especially since ive had significantly less places to go for the last 3-4 months of quarantine. so I’m not sure which is causing it and if the Ayurveda is actually doing anything. Also if you’re posting updates or tips please comment on which herbs you use!😊 I use fenugreek, neem, amla, brahmi, hibiscus, and msm powder (this isn’t Ayurvedic but I add it anyways).

    Most of us at some point has jacked their hair up trust me with something hair dye, overprocessing, doing to much, neglect we are out here just not being our hairs best friend and loving our hair like we need to. Taking care of our hair can feel like a job, because we have so many other things that demand our attention. Just stick to a regimen of regular washing moisturizing, and simple styling and trimming and you will be back on track and on your way to hair and emotional recovery. My aunt kept dyeing her hair multiple times in a course of 2 weeks trying to achieve a certain color. It fell out in patches in different parts of her head. She recovered and her thrived again and all is fine.

    I just found your videos because I’m literally going through the same thing right now. I have fine low porosity 4c hair. My hair has probably been about the same length like 7yrs. I didn’t realize how much love and dedication it would need. Between being pregnant and having a baby at the start of the pandemic and the loss of my brother this year, it’s been a long 2 yrs and I haven’t been good to my hair, it’s broken off in so many places. I hopped on the headband wig craze and thinking I was doing a good thing, those things snatched all my edges a nape hair (which are already weak) sooo freaking fast.. I’ve ordered a lot of your recommendations and I’m basically starting my hair journey over the right way. I’ve been binging all your videos. I’m so happy I found your channel, you’re really a breath of fresh air!xoxo😘

    I’m going through hair fall too. I saw a dermatologist to make sure it wasn’t something serious. Found out it’s a form of alopecia areata, he gave me steroid injections in my head, girl. All I can say is, if you are doing everything right (less stress, better health routines, and good hair care) and you still have thin hair, you should see a specialist. Some things that cause hair thinning are better treated sooner than later.

      Jessica C Yeah I hope you don’t deal with it either. I found out so much information about alopecia. Some of the things black women put on their hair as children, can start to cause hair fall in your mid 20s-30s. Most women do not even notice hair fall until 50% of the hair is gone. There is stuff that we do that can cause scarring and literally attacks the hair follicles. My derm told me that oils and things are good if you do not have follicular problems but once you do, the oils have a very hard time penetrating deep enough to repair follicles. Basically there is so much info but unfortunately we tend not to see a specialist until the problem is past repair. Good luck with your hair journey.

    It's crazy you mentioned the curlformers during that starpuppy vs shrinkage series, because I remember watching your hair (which is similar to my own 4b/4c/4a) and thinking that my hair wouldn't be able to handle the roughness of curlformers. I suggest putting it in a protective style (diy box braids/passion twists) for a few weeks (6 wks max) and seeing if that helps. During the protective style, you should continue moisturizing and sealing your hair. And emphasis on diy (or a friend/family member you can trust to be gentle). A salon might be too rough because they try to make it so neat.

    I experienced the same thing with crotchet braids. I would wear a style for a month, wash braid and pick a crotchet style to put in again. After a year I noticed my hair wouldn’t curl up and it was dry and thinner so I cut it all off. I thought since I had my hair in a ‘protective’ style it would help my hair flourish but it did the opposite.

    • @leilanidru7506
      @leilanidru7506 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I’m thinking of trying crochet braids next. What do you think the problem was? Did you deep condition? Was there too quick a turnover between styles? Like did you put in a new style too soon after the previous one? Sorry if these are invasive and anyone else who has a similar experience with crochet pls answer. Last year I bog chopped - again🙄- due to my neglect and damage and I’m not trying to go back😭

    • @rockofages28
      @rockofages28 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Leilani Dru definitely not letting my hair breath in between styles. I moisturized my hair often in the styles but I just don’t think my fine, naturally thin hair could take it. Plus last year I was going through a lot and under a lot of stress so that may have just added to the problem.

I just want to say that I deeply value and love your personality/the way you tell your story and explain things, and at the same time naturally offer valuable nuggets of information/experience. We have different hair textures, but your tips and advice (through sharing your story), are absolutely universal. ❤️✨🙏🏼 2018 was a horrible year for me too: mind splitting stress, anxiety, deep deep deep sadness, painful loneliness, loss of Friendships, loss of self... I too ended up neglecting myself, and my “ sadness goggles“ warped my reality. I really just stopped taking care of myself completely, and my body, especially my hair suffered. My skin and nails were wrecked as well, and my body was in a constant state of inflammation it feels. Everything was warped. Slowly but surely, alongside you, I’ve been recovering into a beautiful, healing version of myself. It’s constant change, but life is beautiful again. 🦋 living in my truth of love. Stories like yours help me feel like I’m not alone, and you give great life advice through your experiences. I guess I’m just trying to say thank you for existing, and for being an authentic, sweet, knowledgeable, and inspiring light on this planet! A true beauty. My hair has also done a 180 through being inspired by you. I learned my hair is “not a cat”! The same thing happened to me. Although my hair was relaxed. I just kept on putting wigs and not even braiding my own underneath then I had to cut of my relaxer and went back natural but still ! I kept on wearing wigs then switched to weaves non stop the front part of my hair ripped off! I went back to a relaxer treated it and also have relaxer stretch days which made my hair really grow. I now wear wigs for special occasions or at least twice a week. When you wear wigs constantly you don’t give your hair the opportunity to breathe and also your front hair starts to recede. Wigs are really a fashion style not everyday use.

    Can't wait to see your hair! So far I feel like I have missed out on half of this year oh, you know being able to celebrate Mother's Day, Father's Day, Memorial Day, 4th of July, my birthday, Etc and on top of that losing my only sibling. Seems like things are not improving at least in my area which is a hotspot for the pandemic right now. That can really get you down because I'm trying to be safe and I'm hoping that at least I'll be able to gather with family members and not endanger anyone at least by Thanksgiving but we still have to have a memorial for my sibling. We couldn't even hug each other or see each other.
