"Just drums with words." Thank you for this. I've been trying to explain this to people but haven't been able to articulate it. The tuplet flow in a lot of today's rap is another type of percussion.
Yo Drew. Would love to see you teaching about the writing process. How to deal with syllables, word placement, rhyme structures, compositions and so on. Keep the grind man. Really insightful content plus a lot of side knowledge that you pass.
Good video. Another addition to your flow is internal rhymes and changing rhyme schemes unexpectedly. I find freestyling often can make you develop a flow of your own easily, you just gotta experiment with different techniques. You can also make random sounds that rhyme to create new flows, Tech n9ne does this.
Do you guys ever need a break from writing lyrics and Making Beats? I write lyrics and make Beats Daily and i need a break sometimes. Do you feel That way too?
Your comparison to drums is dead on. Have a consistent tempo, fast tempo with slow fills, slow tempo with fast fills, completely irregular time signatures etc etc. Dope vid though man.
Dude in grade 6-7 i could flow fast pretty fast. a good 6 years later i can only do simple basic rap after not doing it for a while. Back then rap was pretty simple now its everywhere

Was wondering if you could do one on flow and delivery of how to basically start the flow when the first verse kicks in, like some examples of how to start your flow, i think this is my biggest problem its my delivery and flow seems like i do the same flow for every song i do, like i try to change up my voice when im flowing but once i hear back on it, it sounds the same...! Could also be i dont really know how to master vocals yet as well. What software do you use im using studio one right now just got it and still tryn to figure it out, cause your quality is good!
sweet bra, been breaking it down myself. as I freestyle similar to yourself of the top. gonna use this for the youth mentor program get them freestyling for a session.
the way I see it , everybody is entitled to an opinion, and anytime you argue with another person about someone being good or not it's just an opinion, you make your own assumptions
Codey Horn Try simply listening to beat with good ass speakers and try to tap to it then pick which mood is good with the beat style. Once you finally feel that rhythms then GO.
am I the only one who thinks he looks like ludicrous. I just started not to long ago freestyling I ain't new to this. thanks for the help the video was pretty lit. keep up the good work you're to legit to quit.
I think this video is mainly how to help rapping live in-flow, as opposed to taking time to solidly think, or come up with the dopest, deepest lyrics for a recorded song, which allows for much more time for revisions and thinking. Very separate aspects of rap, as there are many aspects of almost any craft. I've learned that whether it's soccer, starcraft, music, or rap, you want to have deliberate, focused training on certain aspects, and then afterwards bring them into a live, jumbled practice. You can train the live-flow aspect, or the "thinking about your second line" aspect before bringing it all into freestyling. You can focus on cardiovascular endurance, or max sprinting speed, or accuracy of goal-attempts, or crossovers before bringing it altogether in a live soccer match. You can focus on raw APM, or not missing workers, or micro, or mini-map awareness before bringing them altogether in a tournament match.
SinclairFilms I don't rap so I wouldn't be speaking from experience. But from what I know and what I can induce and deduce logically, my approach would be a few things. not necessarily in this order, but definitely before live freestyling. Another qualifier is that people's minds work differently, and I'm much more of a slower, analytical mind, as opposed to a "dive-in, and think while acting" mind. So these would be my approaches. For me, freestyling is too unstructured, with too many variables flying around for me to distill and identify patterns. I am pattern/principle-driven, which once I get, I can generate all the infinite possibilities of subspecies. 1) just listen to a lot of rap that you appreciate and enjoy. Inspiration and enjoyment is big. 2) Distill principles and patterns of rap that you see, especially the very awesome rhymes. In Eminem's 8 Mile, there's "momma drama sreamin on a too much for me to wanna" This is what is called ... I forget what It's called... but it basically transcends single words, and it takes sound patterns of multiple words, and cross-words. Boom! Pattern Identified. Keep looking for other patterns, like word-bending (aka cheating, but hey lol). Rap Battle's Mozart vs Skrillex bends "here" with "diarrhea" and "Idea" and "IKEA". It goes well with the European accent pronunciation of "here", and being Mozart. 3) Write. This allows you to isolate your thinking, without the distraction of adrenaline, cortisol, the desire for props and recognition, the fear of bombing and embarrassment. 4) Do it for yourself, and determine your "success" by your satisfaction first, before being judged by others. External approval is a tricky beast. It's the ultimate real measure of quality when it comes to an art like rap, but it's also a harsh killer of potential if the bud is exposed before it's ready. Understand and embrace things will suck. Even when you're good, you will write crap. It's mining, where your yield is never 100%. 5) Have something to say. I only actual wrote a rap / rhyming poem when I had something to say. Too many people do it just for the fame, or external reward. Real quality swells up from inside, inspired, and where your inspiration is fed by your perspiration. This comes from reflecting on life/things, and focusing on genuine value. More philosophical than practical, but there are some bits of practical stuff in there. Again, my strength is inducing / deducing, and not so much from experience.
gwho You have so much insight! Its crazy! I've noted down everything you said, I appreciate the help immensely! I'm sure it'll be a long ass process before things start coming together, but I hope it amounts to something. You're a legend :)
I'd find a group or club that's into it. or just friends who you can have sessions with, and basically get exposed to their styles. Their styles will inspire something in you, and you can see how you can mix yours, resulting in idea sex, as James Altucher calls it. The social element is huge, even for a rather non-social person like me. It's not just exposure to new ideas that you wouldn't generate yourself, but also upkeep of motivation, positive reinforcement, keeping you from burning out or getting weary of the art, networking for opportunities by building relationships and having something to offer whether it's your skills or another connections for others, as well as the critical feedback that's not done in an emotionally crippling way.
im just starting out on singing and stuff, but music and singing runs in the family as in drawing and dancing. anyways my friends and i are starting a girl group, and they said im in more of the "in your face swag. and break stuff.." but i wanna learn rap and be able to sing as well. i can rap to Linkin park bleed it out.. (of course, i listen to the song millions of times and practice at it. ) but any advice for me and the group and the rapping parts for me?
It all comes down to time! If you put in the time with any craft, you will get better! The best tip I ever got was to get CLEAR on EXACTLY what you want! Know what music you want to make first, then you will be able to create it :)
hey i love everything you're doing with the channel everything helps a ton! but i would advise if you could add your songs you use in the bio and give us maybe a playlist with good basic songs and organize them by flow speed? maybe just make some playlists on your soundcloud that we can have access to
Shit and I was thinking my stuff was bad cause it so loose and open. Now I realize the error of my way, I was my hardest critic. What I need was flow. Thanks bruh.
Yo when you said flow is like words but converted to drum patterns I got confused. I started to do that and all of my lyrics sounded horrible over the beat, but when I just make them up and make sure they're the same amount of syllables, it's sounds so much better..
If you ever wondered if Drew's videos actually help, all I gotta tell you is that they are timeless and you can always come back and re-learn from him!
I’m better at writing rap lyrics than rapping Here is a rap that i made its kind of like a diss track The beat drops as deep as your IQ. I never lose, because losing is the act of people like you. Beyond the walls of rap, life is defined. I think of rapping when I'm in a hype state of mind.
***** Wow! I can't believe you actually replied. This made my day, keep up the great work with the videos, I think it's awesome that you can explain the technicalities behind rap. Will definitely use your tips in my next rap =)
Do you have a video on how to do that fast burst flow like Big L does in a lot of his songs. Like from put it on where he goes "I flows, so one of my shows, wouldn't be clever to miss I'm leavin competitors pissed To tell you the truth, it gets no better than this" haha i hope that makes sense.
thank you so much how to rap you the goat man no cap 🐐 i had to watch this video a couple of times the first time i watched it i just watched and got the information but the second time i watched it my skills were way better so i instantly input this practice into a beat and it helped a lot💯 i appreciate you man 7 years later still helping rappers out! now that’s real ✊🏾
Really dope vid Drew! Never seen your vids before, but I just subscribed after watching this. Some awesome pointers that I'm definetely gonna use. Side note: You sounded a lot like Method Man when you did that NY mid tempo flow lol. Not sure if you get that a lot, but I noticed it. Do you make music at all?
never thought I'd be getting rap lessons from Kobe Bryant.. but this is very useful
haha
haha
haha haha

To everyone bitching about Drew calling Eminem decent in this video. Don't get ahead of things and jump into conclusions. He mentions Eminem in almost every video and talks about how he is one of the greatest.
Ive only seen 2 vids from this guy and i could tell right off the bat he really respects ems skill, using him as example with his beat, and another talked how he freestyles.
That literally one of my favourite songs.
The decent rapper line was a joke.
Good point though
smh, people didn't see the sarcasm when he said "decent"

Yo, he started rapping without any effort.
Yo Drew. Would love to see you teaching about the writing process. How to deal with syllables, word placement, rhyme structures, compositions and so on. Keep the grind man. Really insightful content plus a lot of side knowledge that you pass.
This is a very first flow basic lesson for every beginner rapper to learn.
Good video. Another addition to your flow is internal rhymes and changing rhyme schemes unexpectedly. I find freestyling often can make you develop a flow of your own easily, you just gotta experiment with different techniques. You can also make random sounds that rhyme to create new flows, Tech n9ne does this.
+How To Rap u said kick u in your face like high pow lol
Internal rhymes change the game
Lucid Trees true because when ur pushed to rap of the dome it shows ur natural flow
You gotta be careful though. Poorly constructed internal rhymes will quickly make you sound amateurish and throw off the listener
What’s internal rhymes and how can I help develop this brother? Thanks fellas
Didn't know Kobe Bryant was this great at rapping!
this guy looks like kobe
austin garcia he sounds a very specific way too lol good video tho
not really a Kobe fan but still a good video drew, keep it up man *****

Do you guys ever need a break from writing lyrics and Making Beats? I write lyrics and make Beats Daily and i need a break sometimes. Do you feel That way too?
Tupac yeah
Yes. Usually because I do everything from an inspirational stand point. If I’m not inspired, it’ll be harder to write
If I'm tired, not focused, inspired, or determined, I don't write
If I feel good or frustrated, I can write
i switch between lyrics/rapping and beats/producing, if i do one i cant do the other until the next day
He went off when he said "kick you in the face like hipow!"😂😂😂😂
The second flow reminds me of how logics flow is
'A pretty decent rapper' turns on the rap legend eminem XD good tips tho
Sinister Shady your name shows you’re a stan
I love this dude this dude actually top ten people Eminem is afraid to dis
Hahaha
When (some) black/African people talk, they sound like they're already rapping. I admire that. They have a flow.
Your comparison to drums is dead on. Have a consistent tempo, fast tempo with slow fills, slow tempo with fast fills, completely irregular time signatures etc etc. Dope vid though man.
If you're a rapper who needs beats, you can use mine for free (if you credit me) :)

Hey awesome freestyle Drew, your advice is dope. After watching your videos I have seemed to improve my flow and I hope you keep making more

Ever heard of a child, aged two
Having to go through what I’ve been through?
Staring through the door frame,
Source of my pain,
The Gorilla Gang came and
Shot moms in the brain.
Snatched up and strapped up,
Taught to be a savage,
It’s kill or be killed
So my enemies I ravaged.
For five years strong,
Internal Armageddon.
Killing and cocaine,
No way to refrain,
I’d miss my family silently in the midnight rains.
With an AK47 and one hundred rounds,
Line up another family
Then they’d hit the ground.
That sinking feeling in your gut,
If you don’t shoot - you’re shot.
Annihilate, fear is a perfect motivator.
Turn a young buck into a sick fuck
Just like the Terminator.
An Exterminator, child soldier marching on,
Gripping tightly to my gun,
What I’ve done was not for fun.
But it’s just begun,
‘Til my last breath I’m still a soldier.
When I was young I hoped it over,
Now I’m older and know better,
It’s not always stormy weather,
Spend my life just stacking cheddar
Was encumbered - now unfettered.
I just rapped this.
Niice
Nice dude

Great tips. You helped improve my rapping skills.
Do you have a video on how to do that fast burst flow like Big L does in a lot of his songs. Like from put it on where he goes "I flows, so one of my shows, wouldn't be clever to miss
I'm leavin competitors pissed
To tell you the truth, it gets no better than this"
haha i hope that makes sense.
he sounds like tyler the creator so much
Your beats are straight fire.
Luv that, he casually says "a pretty decent rapper..." puts on Eminem.. I'm like 😂 😂 😂
I’m just starting rapping. But have been drumming for 15+ years. Does having that rhythmic sense and knowledge from playing drums make rapping easier?
I love your style

Really dope vid Drew! Never seen your vids before, but I just subscribed after watching this. Some awesome pointers that I'm definetely gonna use. Side note: You sounded a lot like Method Man when you did that NY mid tempo flow lol. Not sure if you get that a lot, but I noticed it. Do you make music at all?
