How To Replace Timing Chain Tensioner Toyota Celica (Major Oil Leak)

  • I have a major oil leak and I'm not sure where it's coming from so I started with the timing chain tensioner o ring. This is applicable to Toyota Celica gt and gts years 2000 - 2005. If you are leaking here it can get on the serpentine belt and get thrown all over the engine making it hard to find.

    im not sure if you had any issues but after the tensioner is installed while in the depressed locked position the engine NEEDS to be turned COUNTER clockwise first to unlock the hook on the tensioner. in the video the engine was turned CLOCKWISE. based on the video the tensioner didnt unlock. the counter clockwise rotation makes the timing chain push the plunger in enough to release the hook. the engine always needs to be turned COUNTER clockwise for all 1zzfe and 2zzge models. just an FYI for anyone else about to attempt this job. The COUNTER clockwise rotation is probably the most important step in this job......

      Would a full rotation counter clockwise be sufficient enough? About to attempt mine

      15 degrees counter clockwise but on the 2zz the belt tensioner arm doesnt allow for clearence to remove. Without either shaving down the back of the tensioner arm or loosing and pulling the belt tensioner away from the block

    Thanks for the idea....I will be checking mine as well. 2000 toyota celica. With oil leak. Rear main seal was replaced 2 years ago. That was leaking bad on mine. And now oil pan is a little leaky. Not bad. But still gonna replace gasket

    My tensioner cannot just come off straight through as it was hitting a bracket.

    Upon Doing further research this method could cause you to skip a tooth in the timing chain (In my case I had no issue and many mechanics use this method). The best practice is to have the timing chain in TDC (Top Dead Center). For this, you will have to look for the mark on the crank pulley as well as remove the valve gasket to see the yellow-colored chain linkson the tming chain at the top of the engine.

      I have a leak in my tensioner, celica 2000. I was told by the dealership a couple of years ago it wasn't bad but the cover needs to be replaced, they quoted 1500, they told me the engine had to be torn apart, watching your video it doesn't look like that big of a job. Am I missing something? also, my car uses very little oil. What is the cover?

    • @ElectricMilesLLC

      @@MsJaneSi I'm not sure in your case. Dealerships always charge more. Even for a simple oil change.

      Is this what you meant? I just watched a video (link below) that shows the engine opened up. He said the design of the 1zz is nice in that it won't skip. Is this wat you meant by skip a tooth?

    Thanks for the video. Did you have to drain the oil first or can you remove the tensioner without spilling oil?

    • @ElectricMilesLLC
      @ElectricMilesLLC  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      No just turn off the car and let it sit for a while so it is not hot and all the oil drains to the bottom of the engine into the pan.

    Did u have excess oil leakage and if so did this fix the problem? I found i was loosing lots of oil after I just changed the oil 3 weeks ago and I'm not smelling anything burning but around this area its wet with greese and underneath it it is caked with old greese

    • @ElectricMilesLLC

      This did fix lots of the oil leak. I add oil stabilizer as well. It slows leaking and burns less oil.

  • @alexmohamed4068
    @alexmohamed4068 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    quick correction. the chain does not drag across the tensioner. the tensioner pushes on a guide rail where the chain rides on.

    • @ElectricMilesLLC
      @ElectricMilesLLC  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I realized that after. But yes your right the tensioner pushes against the giant timing chain tensioner cover.

    Could I do this same steps if my chain is loose?

  • @Teknakill
    @Teknakill ปีที่แล้ว

    The spring can't be that strong to not use some peice of wood to push agaisnt the unit and something else so the bolts can be tigthend.
    That would relieve the hassle of having to worry about the hook getting released, especially if you don't hear the click sounds if working in a loud area.
    With that, if you know your chain hasn't skipped a gear, I don't see why top dead center matters, so you don't have to take the valve cover off to inspect things visually.
    The whole goal here is to just fix the leak, nothing more.

  • @richardlawrence1771
    @richardlawrence1771 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    When it was leaking was it leaking towards the driver side

  • @Teknakill
    @Teknakill ปีที่แล้ว

    Clean the outside area first! Undo the two 10 mill nuts to expose the gap without pulling the unit off, clean both surfaces perfectly. Use some (just enough, dont be a drywall mudder) liquid gasket maker for high heat purposes on the flange OR a thin line on the case and tighten the bolts back up.
    Job done, you have sealed the leak without much hassel or seeing the old O-ring.
    That costs 100's of dollars? Bring on the comments please. Enlighten me, or prove me wrong.

      @@superkari28 Yes press down the tensioner fully and apply the lock, slide it back into the hole. tighten the 2 10mm bolts and begin cranking the from the crank pulley. Even though the lock is on it automatically slips off when you begin cranking.
