buddiec41 absolutely bro, I agree 100%. There are some amazing young drummers today but not sure they will have the same impact as an Omar or Harvey, these guys are legends.
I first heard Omar Hakim on Sting’s first solo album, “The Dream of the Blue Turtles.” I played my cassette over and over and over again. Sting put together an awesome band for that album: Omar Hakim-drums, Kenny Kirkland-keys, Daryl Jones-bass, Branford Marsalis-saxophones, Janice Pendarvis & Dolette McDonald-background vocals. Omar’s use of the ride cymbal and the hi-hats were so innovative and creative. It was sooo unlike the stuff I had been listening to. There was just an absolute pocket in every song. That album was just a sample of what Hakim could do. Sting released a double-live album from the Blue Turtles tour with the same band that featured songs from his first album and songs from The Police!! But those songs were revamped in such a way that made them so fresh. That album is called “Bring On The Night” and if you’re even remotely interested in Sting, The Police, or Omar Hakim, then I highly suggest that you get it. You will not regret it. Omar is so tight yet so loose I don’t even know how to describe it. He has a lot of help from that incredible band, particularly Kenny Kirkland on keys and Branford Marsalis on tenor and soprano saxes. I could go on but I think I’ve said plenty, and that’s just his work with Sting. I remember going out and buying Sting’s second solo album, “...Nothing Like The Sun” and being a little bummed out because Omar wasn’t on it. Instead it was a guy by the name of Manu Katche. I ended up loving that album just as much as the first one. Cheers.
@@Erotified When I think of Manu I think of the word "finesse." He can slam in the pocket but I like what he does on songs like Englishman In New York and so many others on "...Nothing Like The Sun."
What an absolute JOY it is to watch the wide spectrum of emotions Omar goes through while composing this piece. It's so incredible that Zildjian and Vic are providing amazing content like this to us at no cost. A huge thank you to everybody involved with these videos.
it's so refreshing to see and hear Omar. Lately, young drummers would be forgiven for assuming that the gospel chop/church inspired style was all there was out there!! Plus, this dude is one of the most recorded session artists of our times. This dude doesn't just play on sessions, this guy plays on hits!
@@morrispurnell9956 It is the old school feel I miss with all lot of those guys. What they can do is astonishing at times, but it is more like drumming as field sports or martial arts, not music. Omar just sounds like he has played a lot of music. He played on that Daft Punk hit from a few summers ago for example and all he does on that is a disco beat..bam, the tune becomes a smash hit. That's what I mean.
That introduction was so 70's announcer's style. Love Omar Hakim's style, pocket, attitude, since 1991 at the Guitar Center drum Dept. playing his Zildjian VHS tapes I was captivated. 🤙
??? He's not underrated at all, dude. Omar's been hovering around the top of the drumming foodchain for well over three decades and any pro knows this all too well.
The first drummer I really got into back in the 80s when I started playing andcstill one of my absolute favourites. The most versatile of them all and a true musician who happens to play the drums. Those who try to turn drumming into an Olympic sport, please take note. Thank you Omar.
Matt Bennett Well put Matt. It’s not about all the acrobatics. However, drummers like Weckl, Colaiuta, Chambers, and Larnell Lewis are some of my all-time favorites. It’s about knowing when to do a triple somersault off the balance beam and when not to.
Omar Akim. He is one of the many drummers that I grew up following and learning from , he is A pillar on which today's young drummers are standing on, when I saw him chop. With Zildjian Live. WOW!!!!

Omar is one bad drummer he’s been around for a long time and he still sounds so so fresh today as he did 30 years! You all are listening to so much history when you listen to him. Blessings to you Omar
Man what a legend and what was even more impressive was how grateful and humble he is. That alone speaks volumes. Thank you Omar for your amazing contribution not only to the drumming community, but more importantly to the music community. #LEGEND
Omar Hakim was huge inspiration to me as a young player. Great to witness him in this context with a level of documented detail that allows us to appreciate his artistry and active engagement in the music. Still killin after 50 years! Congrats!!!
