1st year pool owner 🙋🏻♀️ I’ve been testing my water once a day, every day! 😂 Also utilizing an automatic chlorinator. It’s been great! No algae blooms (knock on wood!) and it’s honestly been so easy to maintain! I followed all of your instructions in one of your other videos on water chemistry when opening the pool and it’s been so easy! Alkalinity, ph , etc all adjusted and at the recommended levels before even adding the chlorine. I think it’s made it sort of fool proof! Thanks! Maybe next year I will only test my water every other day! 😂
One of your best videos to date Matt. You need to highlight more the importance of CYA levels with the right amount of chlorine levels. 1-3 ppm of chlorine is a generic recommendation, your chlorine levels depends on how much CYA is in your pool, the more CYA the more chlorine you will need.
Great advice from Matt at Swim U. His video's are clear, concise, and a great resource for information. Thank you for all your Institutional Knowledge passed forward. You have helped me keep my pool in check. 👍
1 tablet of chlorine was enough to keep levels good for 2 weeks. but after I installed a pool heater, the chlorine level dropped dramatically. I got a chlorinator and now I keep the chlorine level good for the whole season
We are using a bromine in our pool seems like directions are a little different for chlorine versus bromine can you add a little information on maintaining a bromine pool bromine pool
Unfortunately, maintaining bromine in an outdoor pool is really tough and many people switch away from it. CYA doesn't protect bromine and it actually gets destroyed faster by UV rays vs. protected chlorine. You'll want to keep your bromide bank oxidized, which means adding shock to the water (like oxidizer).
More pros having pool indoors then outdoors I was smart enough to put mine is in my back porch its like a sunroom. Don't have to worry to much about chlorine but will need floculant or purified blue bottle at least once a week.
It appeared non-liquid CYA was added directly to the pool. Is the BioGuard brand good at dissolving? I used non-liquid once and ended up breaking out the vacuum because I couldn't get it to dissolve using a brush. Thank you!
Man great video! Just explained why im fighting my pool in central south Florida! Cant keep chlorine levels up, added sanatizer to help the uv factor. Added more salt to bring level up a little higher but in range, ph and alk are perfect. And usually run pool on high for 6 hours. I uped the timer to 8 hours. But after watching your video. Would it be better to run 24/7 on low during the heat of the summer? Also i have a semi in ground metal pool. 15x26x54. Im using a pool cleaner called Wanda the whale. It does good. But heeps getting the hose wound in a circle and takes 2 days to finally clean bottom. Is there a better option?
Glad it helped clarify things! If your problem is algae/cloudiness, run your pump more. If it's chemical levels, follow the other steps (like testing, chlorine boost, and CYA)
The chlorine tabs I am using aren't doing anything. I only have a 1000 gallon pool and have to add shock daily or every other day. They are rated for 2500 gallons. Hth told me to stop using them and then add a small amount of shock each night. I just don't understand after adding cya ( it was at zero) why the chlorine just disappears. I just added more ph down because the colors on the test strips sort of match towards the top. It was up previously. I also added algaecide and am going to add more because we started getting a slimy feeling and dust at the bottom of the pool. The slime is gone but these particles are a battle. I ordered a skimmer, so hopefully that helps. This is such an uphill battle for some reason.
Did veteran made a pool drain cover there is no information about that cover on the Internet or no pictures of that cover on the Internet. Do you know anything about that cover? What does it look like you have a picture of one
when using liquid chlorine, is it always necessary to add muriatic acid at the same time? Liquid Chlorine has a pH of 11-13. I exclusively use liquid chlorine since my CYA is high but I have a hard time getting the pH down to 7.5 where it should be.
Everything tests perfect but the water looks like 2:37 and slowly dissipating. Had a bloom and a week of 100s didnt help. Usually goes away faster but i think i gotta clean the filter..didnt do it before summer started.. my bad.
After this and last summer, I've been considering switching to bromine. I just feel like the AZ sun eats up the chlorine as fast as I pit it in. I'm at the point where I'm considering getting two chlorine floaters. Is there a better way? My pool currently holds just under 14,000 gallons but I don't fill it up that high as I don't want my youngest to be overwhelmed by the cannonball waves. I would say that I fill it closer th 12,000 or 13,000 and I go through 3 chlorine tablets every 5 days.
That is about standard for us in AZ during the hot summer months. Shock it at least once a week and alternate between liquid chlorine to help keep it in balance. Also, if your other areas are not within range your chlorine levels will be low.
Someone else already left a helpful comment about shocking. But a heads up about bromine: CYA doesn't protect it and it actually gets destroyed faster by UV rays vs. protected chlorine.
I actually shock my pool every Friday night as part of my pool care routine and this year I treated my self to a robot vacuum cleaner. I use it twice a week to help with the dirt that gets in. Maybe next year I will try a saltwater generator instead.
The night shift guy is only adding four tabs and then turning the feeder full blast and leaving it like that over the weekend. There is a drop in the chlorine on the log book right when we started getting into 78-110 degree spring and summer. 😅😮
PLEASE, PLEASE Help me!!!!!! I have something on the bottom of my pool, when I brush it, the stuff puffs up in a cloud. If I leave my pump off, the next morning nothing is on the bottom of the pool, it gathers later after I've turned the pump on. If I leave my pump on over night, the stuff is all over the bottom. What is this stuff, I dont think its algae as my chlorine levels are kept 5 ppm or higher. My Stablizer is at 90 ppm, PH is at 7.5, Alkalinity is at 120 ppm. PLEASE HELP ME!!!!!!
What type of filter system do you have? Sand, Diatomaceous Earth, or cartridge filter? Sounds like it might be diatomaceous earth feeding back into the pool or it's algae. @4:15 in the video.
@@SwimUniversity PLEASE, PLEASE, HELP ME, I've shocked the pool, I've double, tripled, and quadruple shocked it. I've used Cal Hypo Shock and Liquid Chlorine to shock it. My pool center professional says it is used up chlorine that has combined with something, killed it and floats to the bottom of the pool. I said isn't the sand in the sand filter supposed to catch that. That's probably more like mid-high speed, which is better than low! If you do go any lower, make sure you're turning it up to high when adding and circulating chemicals and running it enough to filter all of your water at least once per day.

Love in central Florida. Finally had to just drain ours for the algae. NOTHING was stopping it 😑
Oh no! Do you know what caused it to get out of control?

Is there anyway you could go over the chemistry of a pool if you have a mineral ironizer pool.

Got any tips for poly stock tank pools? I have a 1,000 gallon, 9’ poly. Using saltwater system with sand filter.
Check out hot tub chemicals for dosing, since your pool is on the small side.

What do you do when cya breaks down because of the hot weather? My water is in the 90 degeees and I can't for the life of my get my cya up.
Thanks so much for your videos!
You're welcome!
Great info as always thank you!
You're welcome!
What's the white powder in pool floor brushing off?
Could be the plaster coming off
If your pool has high cya levels, will that help protect liquid chlorine?
CYA does protect liquid chlorine, but it should still be in range (30-50 PPM)

That's frustrating. If the pH is really off, the chlorine can not work as effectively. Is your CYA in range now? And your chlorine is zero?

The temporary spike of pH from liquid chlorine should actually drop as the free chlorine drops/stabilizes. What are your FC and CYA levels?

What happens if you vacuum it? Sounds like something is coming out of your filter.
It's probably algae, and you should try to shock your pool. Make sure your filter is clean, too.
