I live in South Florida and for the past 6 years I’ve been paying a pool company for half of the work that I was performing ANYWAY myself in the form of physically cleaning. With our newest house my wife suggested that I (just) do it all myself and save the money. Literally all that it took was this video and a trip to my local pool supply store less than a mile away. THANK YOU!!! I spent at least $100 per month, per year, for the last 6 years (not counting any extra chemical, filter, or pump costs) which totals about $7K which I could’ve used on drugs and hookers!!!

Same here, moved to Broward County last year. First time in-ground pool owner. I noticed dark streaks forming on the sides and bottom, then I started seeing small dark spots forming. The pool care knucklehead would come weekly for about 5 minutes and seemed to randomly add chemicals. I was not convinced that he had any clue what he was doing. I got tired of getting ripped off by local "pool care" companies and am educating myself so I can take proper care of my pool. Thanks for your help Matt!

73 and a first time pool owner. For over a year the water is crystal clear in my hot NC backyard. Circulation and cleaning makes keeping the chemistry easy. Circulation and cleaning is made easy by robotic vacuum for the floor/sides and cordless robotic solar skimmer for the top.

I live in Australia and my husband and I just moved into a new house with pool. He is a bit of clean freak but for some reason he doesn’t care about pool at all. Our pool became extremely dirty after one month of ignorance. He doesn’t wanna call a pool guy because the quote of the cleaning pool was $700 and he said he is totally fine with the mud pond. We had a huge fight over the pool. So I decided to do it by myself. Oh man, you guys are the best!! Watching the videos and learning how to maintain and clean help me more than anything!! Happy pool happy wife😂 Now I can sleep peacefully. Thank you sooooooo much🙏❤️

This is our first year with a pool and I must say it’s been very trying! The people who shut down our pool (we moved in the fall last year) never told us to turn off the motor so when we finally figured it out, it was 2 months later. Needless to say, we needed a new motor when we opened the pool this year. We got new people to open our pool and install the motor. It’s a week later and the pool is still green! My husband took a sample to the pool store yesterday and they told him he needed 10 bags of shocks. He came home and mixed them in a bucket and walked away to clean up some debris and boom! There was a yellow cloud of smoke overhead! I was not outback with him but he was drinking a ton of water because I guess he inhaled some of the gas! He could have been killed! He said the guy in the store never explained that he should mix the shock one at a time. We are so aggravated and over this pool! We just feel like everyone who came here basically took the money and then left us to figure it out for ourselves!

    • @SwimUniversity
      @SwimUniversity  5 ปีที่แล้ว +11

Taking care of a pool can be difficult when you have no one you can trust. I recommend sticking to a single source of info. Our website is one, but you can also find a single person at the pool store who knows their stuff. It's important to have a pool mentor when you're first getting started. After that, you'll quickly become an expert. It's easy once you get the hang of it.

Just want to add a comment about your new brush offered in your store. I know how a cheap brush can ruin a good day. When I was a kid I was helping my dad clean the pool by brushing down the sides when we opened the pool in the spring. The cheap plastic brush broke and I cut a hole in the liner.
Spend the money on good quality pool equipment. Pools liners aren’t cheap. And spending a few extra dollars on quality tools is well worth it in the end. I’ll bet my dad thinks so now. A cheap brush will cost $10. I think PUs brush was $18. I’ll spend $18.

Been a pool guy for 7 years. I just wanted to add that all pools are different. If its a smaller pool with great circulation you can get away with running the pump 4 hours a day. And if its a huge pool with old equipment and worse circulation you will have to run the pump much longer to keep the pool nice.. old filters. improper cleaning of the filters.. type of pump .. plumbing.. valves .. can all effect circulation..

Depends on how much money you wanna spend but I personally would fill it, test it, and if anything a way out of wack adjust and then just keep a tablet or even half a tab in there all the time. Good thing is it's easy practice if you wanna mess with water chemistry but cheap to just refill if you just wanna use a tablet and refill if things get wacky.

I found an easy way to reinstall DE filter pads that needs to be shared. I don’t do videos so perhaps you can add this to one of yours. I was one of those who struggled with getting my Hayward filter pads realigned after taking them off the manifold. There was always one or two that would leak DE back into the pool on completion. I thought one or more may have torn but it turned out the filter pads weren’t seated properly to the manifold. I found it by running the pump in the backwash mode (cover off) and seeing water leaking from several of the connections. After disassembling I turned the manifold upside down, started with the short pad and worked clockwise outside to inside making sure all pads were well seated into the manifold and there correct spacers. The hardest part was getting the long bolt back into the manifold hole and it wasn’t that bad. All in all this was a much easier task than working from the normal position and no leaks or DE back into my pool. As a side note, I almost purchased a new filter set at $100 plus.

thank you for this video! My return jets were not at 8 o'clock angle which is why my pool was not cleaning effectively. I also realized one of my return jets didn't have the directional flow inlet needed to push the debris towards the skimmer basket.

I run my pump for 2hr in summer and 30min in winter. Works fine. Maintaining chlorine is annoying.

Is there a particular type of pool brush to use in an in-ground pool? I have a brush, but it continuously loses its nylon fibers. TIA

My wife and I want to add glass and sand to our 3000 gph pump. Is that a good idea? or a bad idea? And why?

I was told we should shock 2 x a week in the hot summer months. Is that accurate? I’m in Texas and it’s 100+ degrees.

i'm sure it's worth it, but most of people will not have the money to buy the $98 course... if it was like $9.80, you probably sell it more than 10x more... i don't think i need it for now, but if it was $9.80 i guess i would be inclined to buy it just because i liked this video so much!

You guys focus on below ground pools, what about above vinyl pools? There’s a little bit of difference with vinyl and pump systems.

I am contemplating installing an inground pool and this video just made me decide NOT to push forward with the pool. Jesus Christ didn't know a pool was this much maintenance! This is like a chemistry experiment and the fact I need to tend to this pool on a daily basis who the hell has the time for that

it is a bit of overkill on what needs to be done - I had a pool company and they only came once a week for about 25 minutes and we did additional skimming once a week. We have had no problems with our pool.
