Thank you a million times over! I tried 3 times to make these this Christmas with 2 different instructors. I failed but couldn't give up, especially when one instructor said 9 years old learned how to make them when she was growing up. Your video was just what I needed. PERFECT instructions. And, you were the only one to tell me how to get 24" long strips when my paper was only 12" !!! Bless you, and here is to a health, prosperous 2024!
This is the best tutorial on these stars!! Maymay asked who thought this up. From what I've read, Bavarian carpenters who had long, even, curling strips of paper-thin wood from planing the edges of their boards smooth invented the stars in the 1800s. A German teacher named Froebel popularized it as a craft for children using paper in the 1900s and it spread quickly to the surrounding countries and across the pond to the US. The proportion is 1" by 24", so you can easily make smaller stars at 1/2" by 12". It's very easy to make these out of ribbon, also.

I had a kit from Hearthsong that made them just like yours! It was maybe 20 years ago? So now I'm making some new ones and found this video, but the technique is a little different and they were dipped in wax then sprinkled with glitter. It's cool to see a different method and maybe you'd like to look into that one too. Comes out the same! Thank you for a well explained video.

I love your videos. Not just the craft, but every time you add a little something extra. Like the "needle" and the "threader". Those are very helpful as I truly have more craft tools than I can keep track of and being able to make the ones I need and also not worry about losing them because I can make more. years ago my mother and aunt made these stars. I always wished I remembered how they made them, I never knew what they were called so I couldn’t look for it on line. I was soooooo excited that I just happened to see it tonight while I was watching Your videos (as I do every night) and now can’t wait to start making them. My mother used some kind of waxed paper and then added glitter to them. I have one but never wanted to take it apart to see how it was made. Thank you for all of your videos and for the wonderful memories you brought back for me tonight.
I made these years and years ago . I used white paper and then I have a little itty bitty crock pot I put paraffin wax in with cinnamon oil and dipped it and then sprinkled micro opal glitter on the wet wax. Beautiful. It is a great idea using scrapbooking paper. I think I will teach my granddaughters how to make these. I love you instruction s they are always so clear to understand.
my first try it took me 3 trys, 4th time I got it, I was doing the first step wrong, I really had to look as you did it closely, I've made 2 so far, I love them! thank you.

This is a very clear tutorial. I make these and have taught classes. I make them as small as 1/16" wide strips for miniature trees and earrings.
I like that you used scrapbook paper. I also liked that you used the tweezers. I of course need them for the miniature stars and I see how they are necessary when you are cheating the length with the scrapbook paper.
If you have pre cut strips the supplies for many stars will fit easily in a shoebox. I made these during a hospital stay and had the best service you can imagine as nurses and attendants peeked in on me (of course leaving with a prize).
I made these years and years ago when I was in grade school. An older cousin taught me. We just used plain paper and then dipped them in melted parafin and glittered them. I hope to make a few this year.

I am so impressed! I'll make some of these too. They remind me of old world times. When I researched the Froebel star I found out that traditionally they would be dipped into wax and sprinkled with glitter after all of the folding is done. I haven't been following you long but I already know how you feel about glitter. LOL. I may have to try some waxed and unwaxed. Thank you so very much!

I learned these stars as an intern in a german kindergarten 35y ago! I have made thousands o them with all kind of ribbons and paper. Spray with glue and shimmer all sizes ,down to tweezers, and huge ones that had to be glued together. and after all these years still my favorite thing to make and give away....

Maymay this tutorial is amazing. I loved folded paper art and I like to teach it to my boys. They like to do craft projects and I think this one could be a good one for any holiday just by changing the paper, charm, and washi tape colors. I'm already looking for something my boys that are still in elementary school, can do for the first day of school to give to their teachers. I appreciate your hard work and the inspiration.

Thank you for these directions. They’re so clear. ...tho I must confess I’ve made 4 now and, far from remembering the steps, I still have to follow the helpful step-by-step for each one.
I’m making mine from fabric which I’ve first folded to enclose the cut edges. This is. both harder and easier than paper because it’s far more bulky but also far stronger and more workable. I’ve made 2-color ones like yours and 4-color ones as well. They’re going to be gorgeous on my tree.

This brings back lots of memories for me. My Uncle taught me to make these when I was a child. We used solid colored paper, dipped them in melted paraffin, and sprinkled them with glitter. My 5th grade teacher taught our class to make them also.

My Grandfather made these at Christmas time. He came to the United States from Germany as a young adult, he learned this from his family. When he was done making the star he would dip them into melted paraffin wax to seal them. So after he passed away (when I was 9 years old) my mother and I really wanted to make these, but my Grandmother couldn't remember how to make them and with the wax on the stars there was no way to take them apart. Thank you so much for this tutorial! My mother will be thrilled that I learned how to make these!

Also called Moravian stars. Made these when I was in high school back in the 70s. I have so many of them made with white paper strips

a friend made my a whopping bag of these from pastel paper. She dipped the finished stay in melted wax/paraffin and sprinkled it with silver glitter while the wax was wet.
Suzanne Cooke That is exactly how my German grandma made them.
My brother made them that way in boy scouts in the early 60s. I am an avid crafter and it took years for me to find the instructions.

As always, Maymay you've done it again! I have seen these before also, but I am so glad you did this video. I never seemed to be able to get the right results. You explain things in a way I think I can do it! . I also appreciate your tip on how to make the paper strips longer. I have always wanted to make these German stars buy my written instructions are very confusing. You demo is excellent. Thanks or taking a complicated star and making it easy. I'm wondering if I could use fabric to make these stars. I'd need to put a stiffener on the back or bind 2 fabrics together using an iron on adhesive. What are your ideas on this?

I prefer your tutorials like this, with no confusion and "ha ha ha" and people's other conversations! this is a very intricate craft so it need you need to concentrate on it but I like it! I really don't care for the live shows not just you other people's as well but especially craft shows and tutorials, better off intimate! I actually preferred your show before you went all big when it was just you and your home on the table!

+Paige Pappas Bednarsky I want to let you know I agree with some of what your saying. I also want to explain my earlier comment of "big time? Lol". I am very aware that God has blessed me beyond measure. I am in awe everyday that he allowed me to take my passion of teaching and crafting and turn them into a full time living. Everyday when I get in my car with my family to head to work I am thankful. I can't tell you happy it makes me feels to be able to work with my children everyday. To watch them grow and speak with customers. Not to mention the relationships we have built with viewers. I have never been a person that was ever happy with their career. I bounced from job to job, a lot. I did my best in every job I was blessed with but it was never a fulfilling career. I have never considered what we have big time though. We have a little store in the middle of a tiny town and we work so hard to bring content that our viewers want. I actually started the store because of viewers requests. Asking for ways to purchase the products I used. It became increasingly frustrating when I wouldn't be able to find links to products or stores wouldn't carry something I loved anymore. Now with the store we can be the ones bringing in the products I want to play with and making sure we can have them for you guys. I don't miss those days of me at home at my table because behind those videos I was struggling. Financially, emotionally and physically. If you've followed my journey you know that though, I tend to not hide anything! Lol Ok, on to where I agree with you, I too think there needs to be a healthy mix of live vs recorded. I am always tweaking my processes and will take your suggestions to heart. I appreciate you and you allowing me this opportunity to explain how blessed I know I am and how gracious I am to have you guys as viewers. I'd love an opportunity to talk about this subject in a different forum. There is so much to say to that person that, just like me, 5 years ago, was struggling to just make ends meet and be a present parent. First I say all the cliches are true! Lol. Don't give up! Push to live your dream (even if like me you didn't know what the dream was or that it even existed!). Today is the first step in your journey, make it count. It is all correct! Pursue your dreams, and most importantly, with God all things are possible.
As a fellow you tuber doing craft videos I know how hard it is to get one video up a week, and I don’t have 4 boys and a husband. I for one love the fact that maymay’s hard work had paid of and I think we should all be happy for others success. Who cares if she’s “gone big” maymay still does superb videos and she and Vince makes me giggle on the live shows.

I love the Christmas in July projects! We need the spirit of Christmas all year round.... Amazing video
I happened to notice that many folks have said they preferred you teaching, being taped. Do you think this could be a possibility, then go to the crafter after show live. Fans can ask any questions about the project then, and you guys can do the across the miles segment or whatever else you have going on for us.
I know your prbly having a blast at Crafters Warehouse, but you are truly missed at home.

Would it be possible to make this out of fabric strips? Maybe use some fusion backing to stiffen the strips? Just wondering. Or maybe some satin ribbon?
