Thank you so much for this tutorial My grandfather taught me how to make this star more than 30 years ago. He died 20 years ago and I can't remember how to make it. I have 1 star in paper he made a couple of days before he died. Now I will finally be able to decorate my tree again thinking of him
Thank you for your sharing! I'm so glad that you found the tutorial useful. One of the reasons I love papercrafting so much is because of stories like yours. It is so special that you have such a lovely reminder of your grandfather! I hope you have a lovely holiday season! If you think of it, I would love to see a photo of your tree all decorated with your stars!
I haven't seen the plastic ribbon on Amazon now or anyplace else for a while. I used to get Ty-Sil brand. I don't know what brand to look for. Mylar works too if its the double sided kind and curling ribbon if you want tiny ones. They look nice using 2 colors as well.
I've made these for years and never used string or made any holes. I just leave one of the ribbons long and loop it back into the point it came out of. This is how I hang these. Yes, you can use fabric ribbon. I had a felt ribbon star made with 3-4" ribbon on the top of my tree all growing up. The felt makes it a little challenging, but it works. Just put the top branch of the tree into the one of the star points. I've also done this with ribbon with wire in it (bend over the end so the wires don't catch). This method is really nice for a tree topper because you can curl the long ribbons at the end.
I Love this tutorial. The only ribbon I have in the house is some 1" Satan ribbon. So I practiced with that. I completely understand why you said the plastic type is better. The satin slides and its poofy. LOL. But it's cool. I'll use for a present topper. Thanks!
Great Tutorial I have made one today. Took me 3 hours to get it right but I wasn't going to let it beat me. Now I know what to do it shouldn't take so long. Thanks Jen
Yay, I am so glad you made one! For me, the projects that take some practice at first are the absolute best, for the exact reason that you mentioned! You didn't let it beat you and now it will get quicker and there is such satisfaction in mastering it!!! I LOVE that you stuck with it, congratulations!! :-)
so it took me about 45 mins to do this. very detailed tutorial. I think I would have finished faster if it wasn't for the "fabric-y" ribbon I used. thank you. this completed the top of a cone tree I made.
I think I remember my mom and our neighbor lady making fabric ones that they waxed. I was in grade school so I don't remember how they did them. I just remember getting in trouble for popping the chocolate candy characters out of their kids Advent calendar. Oops
There's a TH-cam video that does exactly this. Think they are also called Morovian stars. If you only do the flat points they seem to call them Swedish stars.
This is a Moravian Star, which is also known as a German Star, and is frequently made from paper strips cut in a 1:24 ratio. I think it MAY be easier with the ribbon though.
Hi Kathryn! Yes it is! :-) Thank you for including the ratio for making them with paper strips! I find that as long as the paper is trimmed to a point for easier threading, both (paper and ribbon) work really well, though you make a good point, ribbon is quite slippery, so may be easier! :-) TFW! :-)
Lindsay took me many tries but I finally got it right! thank-you for posting your videos I'm learning a lot being a little crafty myself I love doing these wonderful products
I tried this with satin ribbon, and found it pretty impossible. Satin slides too much, and does not grip. I tried using hot glue, fabric glue, and a glue stick, and found none of them satisfactory--some of them show through, and some of them don't stick. Paper works much better.
I have tried it with satin ribbon as well, with similar results to what you experienced. The ribbon I used in the video isn't satin ribbon, it's wide ribbon (roughly 1 inch wide) with a satin-like appearance that is traditionally used to wrap presents. It is made from a plastic that behaves more like paper than other ribbons do, it comes in every colour of the rainbow and is ideal for this project. You can purchase it at Hallmark stores, and in the gift wrap section of large box stores.
Thanks, I know what you use. You probably forgot, but in the beginning of your video, you ask if anyone would like to try this with fabric and let you know how it works. So I did! :))
Ah, ok, excellent! Thank you! The video is from 2013, you are exactly right, it has been a long time since I've played it back. Thank you for watching and for trying it! :)

You can use paper strips or fabric folded into strips too and then dip it in wax.
How amazing are these ???? Thank you very much for posting how to do this 👍🏼

Almost any kind of paper works really well, as well. Your videos are excellent, and your replies are super fast! Thanks so much for doing all this :)
Like your video but you are not speaking loud enough after your initial intro when doing the demo.
