I have worked in mining both underground and opencast for 40 years and I can assure you the training methods back then was quite different, it was more a matter of "swim or drown" back then
I have not worked for BHP but out of the 3 people I've worked with elsewhere that had got their start in u/g mining with BHP at Olympic Dam were completely hopeless and all ended up getting let go pretty quickly. I think going with a contractor is much better to get your start, bit more cutthroat and sink or swim, but atleast you will come out of it with some sort of work ethic, unless you only want to work for BHP the rest of your life
I quit working at the restaurant because I felt disrespected and undervalued. My boss would constantly ask me to do tasks that were below my pay grade, such as cleaning up after customers or taking out the trash. It seemed like he thought I was just a janitor, not a valuable member of the team During my time as an underground and surface miner, I formed lasting bonds with my coworkers. They embraced me as one of their own, treating me like a member of their family.
