Watching this in 2022 and it's forty years ago and I'm right back in MN as an exchange student. If I close my eyes and tap my heels together...just maybe I could return there to a better world.

I'm actually surprised that companies haven't jumped on the "retromercial" thing and re-released these on television. Cheap way to advertise without the production costs and time spent on new ads. People eat this shit up...
Cept for 4K TV. Kids watching would think there was something wrong. Watching Old Walker Texas Ranger and A team shows suck with poor resolution. On new HD flicks air brushing the womens makeup is a neccesity since 1080p and above shows every sag, crease and crowsfeet. Maybe 30 year old SNL skits could be redone for advertising? They are old, broke and on medicare? Money money money!
Some companies have done this. I know Folger's re-played their old Irish river dancing ad from the 'Best Part of Waking Up' ad campaign of the late 90s/early 2000s on television around 5 or so years ago
This is my absolute favorite Coca-Cola commercial. I remember it well and can still remember all the words. And this commercial has something that you just won't see in today's world- young people who can actually sing and dance. No Auto-Tune required.

It reminds me more of "Merrily We Roll Along", one of the most famous cult musicals of all time. It only ran for a couple of weeks in 1981 but has gone on to be widely performed (it just had it's five THOUSANDTH) production. Partly because the guy with the curly hair at the piano is Lonny Price, who starred in Merrily.

Isabel Glasser. I went to NYU with her and, among other classes, took dance with her. She was so good that she got to lead the class sometimes. She went on to have something of a film career.
I read somewhere that this first aired during the Super Bowl in January of 1982. Does anyone know if that's true? It was obviously inspired by the movie Fame, from 1980. For some reason I've always guessed that the actors were lip-syncing and the singing was actually done by others and dubbed in. Don't know if that's actually true though. Still a fantastic commercial.

I like the '70s-looking pianist, but other than that, I just remembered why I hated living through the '80s so much! I much prefer the 'Catch That Pepsi Spirit' advert from 1980, with the young girl attempting to toss and catch the baton with the school band on the day of the big parade. That advert was so positive and uplifting, signalling the start of a good decade--too bad it failed as a soothsayer. It's probably the last great soft-drink advert. Sigh... (I'm almost 41!)
