Geo pretty much taught me how to shave here on youtube when I went back to wet shaving, I'll say I took it up after finding his video's because I used a DE once and forgot it all and likely didn't know a thing any way. 4 years in and I have not nor ever will go back to a plastic razor or canned goop. The BEST way to shave is old school imho, biggest thing to me is...it all made shaving enjoyable and a leisurely thing and not a miserable task.
The Mülhe R41 is a beast! Probably the best DE razor in the world today! It certainly raises the bar in shaving! I got a BSS in a WTG pass! Outstanding!
Many say (including myself) the best in the world is a 1940's Gillette Aristocrat, or a 1960's Gillette fatboy toggle depending on who you ask. As far as current production you may be right (I am still waiting on the mail for mine, so IMO the jury is out), But I would put my Ikon OSS up against any current razor. I will say, I am really impressed with what Muhle can do with plating zinc based pot metal. The plating on my R89 is by far the best in the industry. Best non stainless razor perhaps.
I usually do 2 pass shaves in the morning. For me, a one pass still leaves visible stubble, and since my hair is black, it's noticeable. Three passes (one WTG, one XTG, and one ATG) shaves way too close and I usually end up with ingrowns a few days later. So I just stick with 2 passes: one with the growth and another perpendicular to the growth. Great and Informative video, Geo!
another great video! one problem I have with only 1 pass is it doesn't reduce my beard enough. It takes off the bulk, but there is too much stubble left behind, and the stubble can be be uneven in length too. 2 passes for me minimum.
Thanks, You persuaded me to buy and shave with an double edge safety razor. I bought the Muhle R41 open comp last week. And well, first trial was a bloody disaster, but second time was OK. I followed your instructions. No more Mr. and Mrs. Gil Wilky. I don't understand why ain't more shaving that way! It's natural, male, costs less money and it's save. Are we all infested by big brands advertising? Good explained videos. More of it please!
I have been shaving with DE razors for over 6 months. I cannot seem to get a consistently close comfortable shave like I see in the videos. I love your videos and wish I could get such a smooth shave so effortlessly.
@geofatboy Thanks again for the help. My face has never been more smooth and less irritated sence I started using a safety razor. Just trying to fine tune my equipment and technique now.
oh yeah also it was my fifth time using a safety razor and i tried the feather blade, it cuts like a hot knife through butter~!! I don't know why some people say they get more cuts, well i only used safety razor for about a month and i already use buffing, and j-hooking so either i picked it up really fast or just watched your shaving tutorial vids WAY more than i should have haha either way better than multi cartridge blades. You should see all the pimple scars i got from multi-razor shaving
Excellent video! I've subscribed and watched a lot of your videos, some of them a couple times a piece. Thanks for all the info you provide. It's really appreciated.
@geofatboy He went to the local barber, and the event was witnessed by Paul Jr. and his mother too. They used clippers and then a straight razor. Its season 6, episode 19 (Jeanette Lee Bike) and can be seen on Netflix
My best time so far for a damned fine shave bordering on baby butt smooth is about 8 minutes. WTG and ATG with a Merkur slant or Gillette Slim set to 9 loaded with a Feather blade. I do think that shaving is analogous to love-making, I get more enjoyment by taking my time. If you're in a hurry though, a hungry razor and two-passes is the way to fly. Thanks, Geo!
I like how you get a thick lather. I think I use a tad bit more water than needed. Im using Proraso ultra sensitive shaving soap. An added question, what, in your opinion is a really good DE razor blade I can use with my razor?
I just bought some shave gear from you, it was delivered within 2 days. Great service. Tomorrow is Saturday, I will try the first shave with the Merkur 34G. How long do the actual blades last? My beard is not to heavy, I shave every day. Thanks for your videos. wtr7
Great video bud! I am a complete rookie to this kind of a shave, and I am sure you have answered this question countless times... I normally use a mach3 fusion, daily, and I have a heavy middle eastern beard. What is the best blade to get into and shaving cream? I'll buy it from your site. Thanks!
Take this effect? Not sure what you mean. If you are trying to ask if agressive DE razors are the only ones you can get a clean 1 pass shave from, there are two answer. One is: Yes. It generally takes a more agressive razor, open comb or high level adjustable to get a clean one pass. Answer two, it depends on the person and the beard. Im sure a 14 year old could get a BBS shave from my Muhle R89, personally I need 3-4. I will usually do two to three passes regardless of the razor though...
When I'm in a hurry I found that I can do one pass against the grain with a single edge bic disposable. However I haven't tried this yet with a safety razor.
Geo, I just read that you like Pearl jam. Im from Canada and just saw them for the 5th time in Hamilton. If you ever want to watch a good concert from way back when, look up Pink pop. A great, great concert at Pearl jams prime. just got a Parker 99r and love it. I think soon Im going to track down a Gillette fat boy at a antique store. Love your channel!!
Geo, Excellent video! Now one of my favorites of yours. How about a video DEDICATED to daily shavers? Safety razors and the rest of the arsonal as well as techniques that ARE BETTER SUITED just TO DAILY SHAVERS. How 'bout it? Aren't most men pretty much, shaving on a daily basis? I've certainly had to take this into consideration on razor choice, cream preference and everything. Thanks !

hey did you know feather razor blade logo changed? it's all grey and dark now...they just went from happy, bright rainbow unicorn color to emo style dark..
would a slant bar have a similar effect? what about a progress or futur? I use a 34cc and have dark hair, so one pass downwards doesn't cut if (excuse the pun) if I want it to look smooth. Thanks geo.
I wish I COULD do a single pass every day and always be smooth. But a single pass just doesn't get the job done for me personally. I have to wait until I have a lot of beard before I can shave.
I used a feather blade in my R 41 this morning. Don't believe I'll do this again. 4 or 5 weepers and a raw face even though I used a prep oil and thick, luxurious lather. Ouch! Won't be able to shave for a day or two.
when I shave in straight disposable blade razor or with my Edwin Jagger ED89 safety razor ((((( if i do NOT clean it immediately, it will rust from inside ))))) i always clean my razor wash it with hot water but if i leave it with out dry it it will rust. (it takes long time to spend in the bathroom. so where i go wrong ???? plz advice. many thanks
im just starting to shave do you sagest i get a non-desposible razer or keep with desposible and if so wich razer do you think isthe best for slightly sensative
Hey thanks for the videos I also have learnt everything from your videos. I use open comb & shavette now only. I want a slant aggressive DE am thinking R41 or Fatip slant.
Thanks! I love your videos. For DE, what do you think is a good blade to start with? It seems best to work up to a Feather, but what are your thoughts?
So, if I am correct, using an aggressive razor like this should only warrant possibly two passes, especially if I shave every other day? For a less aggressive razor, is that where the 3 passes comes into play?
+Tony Marinelli That's correct Tony. The R41 (aggressive razor) will go through several days growth in one, two passes at the most. A milder razor (like a Weishi) will require more passes, sometimes many more passes to remove the same amount of growth.
geofatboy Hello. I use Baili, Merkur Long Handle, and EJ 89 as i have sensitive skin. I do 6 passes (N-S; S-N; Across the Grain on my face; across grain both way on my neck; and finally S-N on my chin). Is that too much? What would you recommend? Thanks
I got this razor a few days ago. I've been safety razor shaving for 2 years with high success, but I am having difficulty with this razor dragging. I also use feather blades. Can anyone help me out?
Of course. it all depends on your beard growth and how sensitive your face is. A more aggressive razor will get through thicker growth quicker. with that said. I can pull a 2 pass shave with a de89 in 5 min. and get baby smooth. All depends on how good you are with a de.
Beard growth makes men individuals if common sense doesn't. With Mühle R41 preparation is key or it will be bloody mess. In my experience the R41 doesn't work well for me with Feather blades. What I wanted to say different combinations work differently for each individual.
What Geo is doing in this video is ok, but I find that going straight down doesn't give me a close enough shave. If you shave everyday and you're strapped for time, but want a closer shave, try going across the grain or diagonally. Don't try this, however, if you haven't shaved for a few days, because you will get razor burn and/or ingrown hairs.

i'm down to about 5.5 minutes for a two pass (one with and one against)
What do you mean when you say an aggressive razor? Is that determined by the weight of the razor or the blade?
It means there is a bigger space between the the blade and the rake or bar below the blade. So it allows more skin to come in contact with the blade.
what brush where you using geo.
So, if I am correct, using an aggressive razor like this should only warrant possibly two passes, especially if I shave every other day? For a less aggressive razor, is that where the 3 passes comes into play?
