Hi thanks for posting this video, I am Pongo's Grandson and lived with my Grandad until his passing when i was a small child (up to 7 years old). Just to fill in some of his after playing history that i am aware of. He had a family and had 4 children with my Grandmother one of which was my mother. Whilst he was in his later years when i knew him, he had a home and whilst not being a rich man, was not in poverty. He had lots of friends stayed very active until he developed cancer which eventually took him from us. You say he is an icon at Villa and that he loved the club and that only one player has scored more league goals in a single season than Pongo (William Ralph "Dixie" Dean) but what is there at Villa Park to commemorate my Grandad (nothing that I am aware of) however Everton have a statue to Dixie, have a Suite named after him and EVERY Evertonian knows who Dixie is. I have asked lots of Villa fans if they know who Pongo is and very very few of them do. I thinks that's the biggest shame in all of this.

Hi Paul, thanks for getting in touch! Really enjoyed reading about your grandfather and his later life, I must say I am very relieved that he did not end up in poverty.
That’s a fair point about there being little to honour him at Villa Park, my intention with videos such as this is to allow more people to know stories in football they may not have heard about, such as your grandfather’s. This video has done really well view wise, so hopefully that will help his legacy and a lot of people will have learned about his story that did not previously know about him.
In the future I am hoping to do a series of interviews with people related to those I have done videos about, I would love to have a chat with you about your grandfather should you be interested?

All these years and I thought the name was pronounced "Wairing". Just goes to show one learns something new on a daily basis. My Dad spoke in raptures of his time at the Villa and you should feel proud of your relationship to such a legend. UTV.

Hey Paul, As a Villa fan i am quite aware of your grandad and those aware of our history do know who he was. Regarding something at VP to honor his time with the Villa, he is not alone in that regard. George Ramsey who played and managed Villa and also won 6 fa cups and 6 titles has nothing. Ron Saunders who created the team that won the title and European cup has nothing. So it is not a slight upon him.
With our current owners investing in redeveloping VP there is a museum about our illustrious history due to being part of it. So, I am sure your grandfather will be represented, it would not be complete if he wasn't.
I hope this gives a bit of reassurance that your grandfather is very much remembered amongst us fans at the Villa.
      All the best and UTV

When I was serving my apprenticeship at Cammell Laird Shipyard in Birkenhead in the early 1960’s Pongo Waring was working there as a Labourer.

That’s so cool, there must be a lot of stories about him from there! Did you meet him?

My Grandad worked there in the stores, probably in the 60's also. He was a cousin of Pongo's.

6:10 My dad told me about Pongo , which was passed onto him by his dad. Three generations in and Pongos name came up on match of the day today. Haaland beating Pongos record. Really not that much time time between the two players in the grand scheme of things, but the game is like it’s from a different planet now. Nice reminder of a great name that’s been in my head for the best part of 50 years 👍🏼

It seems the story is similar for some of players from the early days. Drink and bad behaviors ended careers to soon. Thank you for another great video. Like, comment, and subscribe to support the channel everyone.

It's pronounced wearing not warring, and Tranmere's ground is Prenton not Brunton Park

are you sure it’s waring rhyming with war, not waring rhyming with wear? my dad was a villa stalwart all his life, born in the west mids, and always talked about Pongo W ear ing.

I’ve heard people pronounce it as both, Pongo’s grandson commented on this vid and didn’t correct it so hopefully I got it right

I heard he was called Pongo because of his smelly socks. A Villa hero no matter what.

Came across a couple of explanations in my research, but the most accepted one seemed to be the cartoon dog one

Youre saying his name wrong. His surname is pronounced as wearing. As in what are you wearing today
