I am an Orthodox priest in Robertson, South Africa, where all our services are in Afrikaans. In the early years when we first started, I had great support from Tad Daniol in Wales, who has been an Orthodox missionary in Wales for many years. I also have a copy of a recording of the Liturgy in Welsh that he sent me. He is also the student chaplain for Orthodox students at 2 Welsh universities. He was originally ordained by Metropolitan Anthony Bloom of London, but with the blessing of Metr. Anthony, he transerred to the Autocephalous Orthodox Church of Belarus, which doesn't exist anymore as a commonly accepted canonical Church, in order to concentrate on work in Welsh in Wales
. Tad Daniol is now part of a Ukrainian Church for Western Europe unde the Ecumenical Patriarchate.

I am an Afrikaner Russian-Orthodox priest from Cape Town, South Africa. We have celebrated Orthodox services in Afrikaans for more than 20 years now, first in Robertson, but also in Randburg and now in Cape Town and Bloemfontein.
If we profess to be part of an apostolic Church, then we should be serious about making the transformative beauty of Orthodox Church services available to the peoples we serve (be they Welsh, Congolese, Japanese or Afrikaans), as all missionaries in the Orthodox Church have done, from the time of Pentecost. There is nothing arrogant about doing this, or yearning to celebrate services in the language of your heart. Rather it is arrogant (and reeking of ethnophyletism) to insist on celebrating services in "the Biblical languages", despite the fact that doing so makes it inaccessible to the vast majority of people taking part in them.

On the Old English Divine Liturgies. Most were in Latin, but St. King Alfred did have a good amount of stuff translated into Old English. Very likely that the liturgy was translated as part of that.

As an Englishman, I am fine with the liturgy being in Greek or russian. i have Greek ancestors and it pleases me to hear my real language.

@@Chrisc-sn6uh I am a Greek, and i have often heard that the Antiochian patriachate does english services, i dont know if thats true. I would be very happy for our brothers and sisters worldwide to be able to understand the liturgies in english.

Greek South African here, I had no idea they did the service in Afrikaans! 😋 We just moved to the Netherlands though and here they don’t have any English… so we have to look for the book that has the liturgy with Greek and English next to it
