  • Salutations, Ladies and Gentlemen! Today, I'll be discussing an incredibly thin piece of cutlery from Germany's city of blades, Solingen. This piece is made by Otter Messer--a company that has been around since 1840 and has produced a variety of traditional, German knives.
This particular knife is known as the 'Mercator klein', or 'small Mercator'. The large Mercator is a very popular choice for everyday use, due to its excellent sturdiness, slender profile and simple construction. The Mercator klein takes these same principles, but scales them down into a smaller, sleeker package. The Mercator klein houses a strong backspring, instead of the typical backlock, making it more suitable for those living with stricter blade laws. The handle shape, blade steel and blade profile are all shared with the klein's larger brother.
The Mercator knife sports an incredibly impressive history--one that almost deserves its very own video! The name 'Mercator' is a Latin word meaning 'merchant' or 'trader'. Coincidentally, 'Kauffman', the name of the original maker who produced the Mercator, is also the German word for 'trader/merchant', as well.
The K55K is easily the most famous version of the Mercator, also likely being the first. K55K knives are only produced in the large variety. Small variations are stamped with the classic Otter logo, as opposed to the "Katze" of the K55K.
    Mercator klein:
-C75 carbon steel satin finished Spearpoint blade.
-Fully integral handle made from a single piece of polished Copper.
-Plastic spacer for the blade tip to rest on.
-Steel rivets with a steel clasp/lanyard loop.
    -Handmade in Solingen, Germany.
Overall, the Mercator klein is a very reliable every day carry for those who appreciate a slim, yet robust knife with a great deal of utility, quality and history!

Happy belated birthday, my friend. Mine was in May.
I've got the black coated one. But that copper is brilliant. And like you said, it will patina beautifully.
    Brilliant video, mate!

The black one looks like a great workhorse! But yes, Copper is probably my favourite, and I can't wait to see the patina!
Happy belated birthday, to you, too! 😁
      Cheers, as always!

I must say I prefer plenty of handle on my knives so never fancied that type of knife, however when I first saw the Boker Atlas I thought at that price why not get one, very surprised at how much I liked it nice drop point blade and great for occasional use, I even found the clip acceptable in use I usually remove clips so it is a good back pocket carry. If I had Mercator Klein I would reprofile the tip just so the blade was just under three inches without spoiling the look of the knife, can't be to careful I don't want a knife confiscated and face a £500:00 fine on top, some Police are paranoid when it comes to knife carrying. 😁

The Böker Atlas looks very akin to the Mercator, (or the Douk-Douk, in terms of the handle) but I've yet to try one.
As for the Mercator Klein, same drill as always- "maybe UK legal, but don't take the risk". It's a shame that the laws are so vague, eh?
      Cheers, as always!

Firstly, thank you! 😊 And secondly, I completely understand why some may dislike copper or brass handles. They do require a fair bit of care and upkeep! Perhaps the steel models would be more to your liking?
      Cheers, as always!
