    The math is simple, the development and production cost of Fetchlands is obviously much higher than basic lands because it includes:
    * 4 lines of rules text - $5 per line, $20 per card
    * holo-stamp at the bottom - $4 per card
    * removing foiling so that they don't curve - $5 per card
    * bigger box - $25

      We need to stop demanding them because that drives the price and assures that they have a reprint equity on those fetches.
      Picture this 6 months of quiet in forums, reddit and even youtubers. MTG Online without a single fetch in their decks and even after this pandemic we start playing without fetches. Wizards will reprint these lands at an unprecedented rate to reignite that desire for these lands.
      I have my full collection on these and I could care less if they went down in value. I just want people to be able to play and enjoy the game at an affordable level. If I spend $100 on upgrading the deck I dont want half that budget to be one land or two lands.

      @GamerBear Actually it would (or at least should) as the price a company pays WOTC for a case of fetch lairs compared to a case of godzilla lairs is WAAAAY different. The only reason they "dropped" having MSRP's was for this exact loophole. Same reason it has a big box and wasn't purchasable direct, using loopholes to get around the fact they use and recognise the secondary market on a daily basis.

      @@sankethbhaskar4236 Exactly my thought. I've bought three of them: Killer Kaleidoscope, Year of the Rat, and Int'l Woman's Day (traded Narset and Oona recently of that set) and did highly debate buying all the Theros gods but passed (same w/ Thalia as I liked the artwork, etc. but don't play Modern).
      If it something I want at what I consider to be a fair price I will buy it; however, if it isn't something I want at the price I won't. I like having the options available and getting something fun when I have the opportunity.

    • @Yous0147
      @Yous0147 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @cak01vej I see that viewpoint, but personally, I wouldn't have given it an A- even without the overall implications of it all. The set is purely aesthetic sure, but there's still value to aesthetic, and 30 bucks for only 5 lands is still a steep price, despite the artwork on those cards. Not only is the product expensive for what it brings of value, but it is also likewise inflexible in that you can only buy all 5 colored lands together and for a full playset you could "need" up to 10 to 20. So yes I agree with the prof's point on aesthetic absolutely being fine to monetize when reprints are present to a large degree, but beyond that, there's still grading the product for what it is and what it brings to the table for someone interested in the product.

      because it IS a quick money grab.

    • @Rizon1985
      @Rizon1985 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's actually a slow money grab. A lot of effort goes into cards that get produced in small numbers and that's also where the price comes from. The artist wage cost has to be paid by selling a lot fewer cards and the production of only a few sheets is also a lot more costly for each card produced.
      So why do it that way? It makes their product line wider which they do to stop their continuous revenue drops.
      They could mass produce these and sell for normal prices. But then it would eat away from the other regular products they are already selling.
      Their big revenue comes from the regular products but they want more more more more. So if short term thinking about revenue is the only goal, it makes sense to add those "high-end" products for buyers who will also already be buying the mass produced products.

    • @endersblade
      @endersblade 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I bought the one with Reaper King, Sliver Overlord and Ur, because I will actively use them and enjoy the artwork. Other than that, they've all just seemed grossly overpriced to me, and blatantly pointing out that WotC is basing them off of the second-hand market. I really hope someone files legal action for this at some point.

  • @ShawnMcNaughton
    @ShawnMcNaughton 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    You hit on all the major points, but a few things I would add:
    - For Card Alters, the more troubling aspect is that these are tournament-legal alternate art, but a custom alter is impossible to guarantee as tournament legal (due to judge interpretation, weight, scope of alter, etc.)
    - One of my qualms with this specific product is that it's 5 lands for $30. Make it reasonable sized playsets for $50 or so, and we're talking. As is, it's either 'ooh, look, this is the 1-in-5 games where I pulled my Godzilla Forest' or 'OK, to have a reasonable full playset for all lands Godzilla, I'm spending.... around $800.' Neither feels good.
    - Reprints need a dedicated product. In fact, in MTG Arena, I think they may have stumbled on the right formula: The 'Historic' card bundles. If I could pay, say, $100 for a full playset (4x) of all 25 of those cards - an average cost of $1/card - I'm on board. Adjust it to approximately the size of a sheet or half-sheet if that makes it easier. Mystery Boosters cut too wide of a swath; they only get more copies onto the secondary market as a practical measure. Spellbooks and Secret Lairs are more focused on being a premium product. They shouldn't need premium packaging - a simpler version of the Commander boxes or a slightly larger version of the Challenger boxes would do. They should also be an evergreen product, or at least a large print run.
    - Let's be honest on the secondary market issue - if they admit to paying attention to the secondary market, we start getting into the situation that caused the Reserve List. At the same time, not admitting that doesn't help them with that argument when there is pricing like the Secret Lair Ultimate Edition, which as you noted clearly is not cost of production + any reasonable profit margin, nor is there anything truly special about the card quality or art.
    I've enjoyed getting back into MTG over the last couple years - but some of these new products just rub me the wrong way. MTG was never a cheap game to play, but this is... different.

But he does know I love godzilla, and things that are pretty. The card with Mothra and the one with the ocean sunset are just exactly what tickles my fancy. Though I still am unsure if I want to fully invest into this whole shebang (a lot of which comes from seeing the other less appealing card art) this is tipping the scales a bit in their favor. And people who stick to the kitchen tables or "game nights" generally just want to have fun drinking sodas and throwing out junky decks because it's fun to play some multiplayer and beat up on the first person to start whining the words "mana screw".

    However, making Godzilla cards locked behind a price point like Box Toppers and a $30 set of basic lands.... Right now, I just honestly feel exploited and I dont even want to play Magic anymore :/

    Hi Prof, I've been watching your videos a long time and I respect you a great deal. I share many of your viewpoints but particularly on the rising cost of Magic and the inaccessibility of formats. I've been waiting a long time to hear you say the words 'legally and morally questionable' and make it clear in no uncertain terms that Wizards uses the secondary market to profit. I'm behind you 100%. If this is something you want to say then say you don't have to hide it in a product review (the comedic timing of that A- grade gave me a good laugh though).

    Hello @Tolatian Community College,
    I think that the fetch lands were "economic boosts" for all the magic infrastructure, like local shops and distributors - they printed something that they knew people wanted, and gave the local stores a free reign in what to sell it for - it's perfect to help those stores stay afloat.

    As a customer who is still waiting on the complete set of Theros Stargazing I'm glad you brought that to attention. I wrote to Wotc requesting simply to get specific stain glass Planeswalkers maybe an extra or 2 nothing difficult. Met with inadequate responses. I'm located in NZ so the $150 was actually $300, and I know of someone in the country who received 4 copies of Thalia about a month ago.
    Happily told wotc I'm never buying another one of these stupid products after all this fiasco.
    Also fun fact. Cardkingdom has or had singles of all the Secret Lairs to date including ones people are still waiting on. So if you want specific cards, juts buy from the people who know how to sell cards for a living in a timely manner.

    THANK YOU!! I had been saying the exact same points you made about the difference between the secret lairs (compared to fetchland edition) and how WotC reeaaally can't pretend that they don't monitor the secondary market anymore...but if a regular person says something, it's not gunna make even a ripple against the mega-fortress that WotC is. But if someone as big as YOU says something and calls them out on youtube, they will be nearly forced to acknowledge this and make some form of action. If anyone has seen the Netflix series Cernobyl; Thank you for being our Legasov and speaking for the rest of us, knowing they will listen to *you* at least!

    I wish someone would address how the quality in printing hasn’t really improved. Foils still bend and cards are still miscut (such as most of the Mystery Boosters in some rarity sheets). AND, there doesn’t seem to be any consistency in card stock. Even the finish varies from set to set. I could have sworn WotC said they were going to address all these issues.
