    Thanks for this Kyle. I've got the 070 with stainless steel burrs. Amazon had it for $209. I was saving for a Eureka Mignon Facile. That has 50mm burrs. So for half the price I got 60mm burrs. Matched up well with my GCP. I was really surprised with the flavors the flat burr got with my filter brew. Nice sweetness and complexity. Overall I'm very pleased with this little guy that punches above its weight. Urbanic shipped it to me here in Costa Rica for $45 in 11 days.😊

    I have had the 070S for over a year now and I love it. The 070S is stepped, but with a simple 5 min modification and Teflon tape and it becomes stepless. Lance Hendricks suggested how to do it and I don't regret it. I got the 070S with titanium burs. I highly recommend it. I also use a bellow to reduce retention.

    I live in Korea and these are easier to find compared to other grinders and it’s cheaper than other brands that cost more especially because they need to be exported.
    I’ve had really good results!
    I’ve worked at specialty cafes and so dialing in is pretty easy. I’ve only used it for espresso though. Only issue is the mess it makes and also it’s a bit inconsistent. For a budget grinder, it’s super underrated

  • @huckthatdish
    @huckthatdish 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I have the 070s. If you align the burrs with aluminum foil shims, the fines production for filter goes way down. The machining tolerances aren’t super tight which isn’t surprising given the price point so if you follow Lance Hedrick’s shimming tutorial it performs a lot better in terms of fines. But stock it definitely does produce a lot of fines in the filter range no doubt. I got the bellows and it does dramatically improve retention. For someone who wanted to upgrade out of hand grinder and get both espresso and filter out of a single grinder for not an insane amount of money I’m extremely happy with my purchase. Also I personally find it aesthetically beautiful but that’s obviously up to individual taste. But as someone who was in the very same situation, if you’re looking for entry level single grinder for both filter and espresso like I was, I highly recommend an urbanic.

    I love the look of this one. The shape remind me of my gramma's pedal sewing machine. There's definitely style to that combo, with your manual press.
    I've been considering this 080, the mignon facile (a stripped down silencia), or a sette 270. Their strengths are quite different from each other. The noise is deal killer for the 270, although it appears the best for single dose. I'd like to see grind retention compare between these two, and particle distribution. My thought on this is the fine tune adjust precision does not seem as easy for tiny micro adjusts as the other two.

    When the Baratza Encore ESP is released, that might be a good grinder to compare to this one. I wouldn’t be surprised to see more companies including a spray bottle in the box. I’ve spray RDT’d every time since discovering the technique. I’ve forgotten static and retention can be an issue since my last three grinders have never been operated without RDT.

    I know you shouldn’t compare flat and conical but I’m really between the Urbonic and the Lagom mini with moonshine burrs. Im primarily interested in espresso. Still a little leery of the power and speed of the mini if I’m making a few for friends. Seems like the mini is in the clarity side of conical and Urbonic on the body side of flat burrs. One is a little bigger and more powerful the other a little sleeker but limited in power (maybe durability?) I would throw the Df64 in as an obvious contender as well.
    If I was more into filter coffee I would look into a power mod to slow it down.

    I have the Urbanic 70 which I’ve added the ‘gevi’ burrs to and made ‘step less’. RPM are way too high to be a good grinder. Not sure but would guess the 80 is also high rpm? Nowhere near as nice as the Sette 270…but is quieter!

    • @KyleRowsell
      @KyleRowsell  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      So I’ve been testing rpm and can’t seem to get a good reading on my tach because of the short reach of the shaft. Will have to further my testing but I don’t think Rpm is a reason to avoid this grinder. The Sette pushes over 500rpm for a conical which is not slow by any means.

    Curious what are the differences, if any, with the vertical mounted burrs as opposed to horizontal mounting?

    • @KyleRowsell
      @KyleRowsell  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Great question. This mostly effects the way the beans are fed into the grind chamber and then subsequently how they are forced out. Unlike Conical burrs, when flat burrs are mounted horizontally there is little to no assist for gravity to remove retention. Vertical mounted flat burrs allow the coffee to utilize both the burr sweepers and gravity to remove the grounds from the chamber. They often use an auger system when vertically mounted which often (but not always) results in faster feeding.
      That being said Horizontal Flats have taken large leaps with grinders like the P64 with little to no retention in a more aestecially pleasing, quieter package.

    It's great that these days more and more affordable grinders pop up which are decent performing, especially for people that are just getting into this world. Around that 300 price tag only option while ago was only basic Mignon for me, today there is couple of them to chose from. I would probably immediately swap those burrs with the gevi ones because I am into lightly roasted coffees.
    Btw my favorite roaster is by far Coffea Circulor, I would recommend trying their coffees if you have a chance. Kudos on the vid as usual!

    I’ve had this grinder for a few months now and the biggest con I’ve found is “stepless” creep. Because the burr spins at a higher rpm, it tends to pull the grind size back unless I hold the dial in place.
    @KyleRowsell did you experience this, too? Were you able to combat that problem in any way?

      The knob turns a big fat screw that pushes the burrs apart for courser grinds. Wrap a couple of wraps of white plumers Teflon tape around the threads. This will add smooth friction and keep it from turning.
