I just got a Lagom Mini with moonshine burrs as an almost exclusive espresso grinder, and I'm loving it. Hardly takes up any room, looks really nice next to my Cafelat Robot, works right out of the box, and super low retention/static. Plus I love that it's stepless.

Great review Kyle. Your original review was one the reasons I ordered mine it he first place. It’s only just arrived (with the obsidian burrs), and so far it’s brewing great coffee.
I completely agree with you that whilst ultra compact, it doesn’t have enough weight or stability in the base to turn it on or off one handed, which can be frustrating. Likewise, having to use two hands to rotate the dial can also be annoying at times, especially as you have to remove the magnetic lid. But the biggest frustration for me has been the removal of the printed numbers on the latest version, particularly as they did this between my ordering it and shipping. I can’t understand the rationale, and it makes dialling in and switching between filter and espresso far more difficult than it should be.
Whilst I love the coffee it makes, the Niche easily retains it’s crown as ‘King of the workflow’, and I won’t be selling it anytime soon!

    • @KyleRowsell
      @KyleRowsell  2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

Woah they removed the numbers? Dang. That’s a bummer!

    • @t0m714
      @t0m714 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@KyleRowsell Yep. Really frustrating, and hard to understand the rationale. Apparently it was because people were struggling with the fact that the zero point wasn’t consistent across grinders - but removing the numbers makes it a lot harder to dial in, and I have to re-zero between every grind. This seems like a backwards step from a company who usually make sensible decisions with the end user in mind.

Thanks for the shout out man. I actually have this grinder from February and I'm extremely satisfied with the workflow and look.
But I had the stalling issue from the beginning after a couple of weeks they sent me a newer version of power brick and it fixed the stalling with Obsidian but as soon as I installed moonshine burrs it came back and it came back big time. I originally ordered the normal 'obsydian' burrs last week with no clue that the 'Moonshine' burrs existed, because at the time, it was not an option on their site. But then the great folks at Option-O reached out to ask if I wanted to change my burrs to their new 'Moonshine' burrs...I said yes, without knowing anything about 'clear-coat' vs 'aggressive-coat'; this is also my first ever coffee grinder. I've had a Mini with obsidian burrs for about 4 months now and it's been great. I got it after seeing one of your earlier vids on it. I'm new to espresso so I wanted something at a lower price point to get my feet wet with dialing in. I've never had stalling, and at most am using it a max of 3 times a day between espresso and filter. One thing for daily use is that mine's definitely not zero retention. I always have to knock it to get back what I'm putting in, or run it for a while after you'd expect it to be done to get everything through. It's definitely improved my shots and I'm really enjoying using it, so thanks for putting it on my radar!
I will say, US customs clearly took mine apart, left it in pieces, and lost one of the 3 very necessary screws during shipping. I had to wait a while to get a replacement before starting it up. So it runs great, but shipping with the screws in some kind of protection would probably improve the whole initial experience.

I've had my Logom Mini 48mm for around a month and love it, use it for pour over, espresso and even for the Moccamaster and it does a great job in all of them, my c40 does have more clarity in pour overs, but to use it to grind 60g for the Moccamaster is just a pain, so the Logom Mini is perfect for that, I've had no stalling yet even when feeding in 60g for the Moccamaster. 7:00 sounds like they set a torque limit to prevent damage if you get a jam, like a stone or other foreign object in your coffee, (which is a common thing for grinders to have, as a safety precaution) but maybe they messed up and set it a bit too low (or just put in a slightly more powerful motor in the later versions).

Recently got my Lagom Mini, sadly too late to get Moonshine burrs with it but hopefully Option-O will sell the burrs separately eventually as I’d be interested to try them.
One thing that bugs me, and it’s by no means specific to Option-O. They claim for example that the Moonshine coating produces less fines and therefore impacts cup quality. You can’t prove a cup of coffee tastes “better” on a graph of course, but things like a PSD for a given grinder / burr set are certainly measurable. If you’re going to make a claim like coating X produces less fines and more clarity, I feel like it should be basically mandatory to post the receipts.
What I’d love to see is give us a distribution graph from both burrs with the same coffee put through each, let the consumer see & decide from there. Otherwise it’s nearly impossible to judge as a customer if you’re just being sold a bunch of marketing based pseudo science.
Not picking on Option-O here at all, this is just a wistful comment generally on the state of coffee marketing.
All that said… I’m still curious to try the Moonshine burrs and see if I can
    tell the difference 😆

Hi Kyle, I am in a market for a new grinder. A small, compact, efficient and functional one that is electric and pleasing to the eyes. I think this grinder fits the bill. I already own a Niche Zero and I love it. I use it primarily for espresso and Moka pot. For pour overs, I tend to use a hand grinder even thought my Niche is capable of grinding for pour overs. I just find the process of changing grind sizes every day to be a hassle and sometimes my Niche misses grinding a bean or two when I change its grind size. I like the fact that this grinder can do espresso occasionally but I would dedicate it primarily for pour overs. Thank you for the video!

reminds me of the properties of machining tools used in manual and cnc machines. coated cutters tend to have a softer edge which doesnt work well with light cuts. coating happens after the machining/grinding process so the cutting edges tend to be a little more rounded over. this does have benefits. a softer edge lasts much much longer and can take much heavier cuts without chipping. uncoated cutters can easily take very light cuts since they are sharper but are less resilient to wear and tear. its surprising just how much these carry over to burrs as well.

This is the best pairing grinder for the Niche Zero. For those who want to 'upgrade' to flat burrs like the P64, you should try this one first to test if you really like the clarity of modern espresso. If not, it can still be your pour-over only grinder. If yes, your upgrade to the P64 will not disappoint. I think Timemore 064S + Lagom Mini will be the BEST PAIR for espresso + pull over just before the "diminishing of return " at 2024

Hey Kyle. Trying to decide between this and the df-64. I’ll be using it 80% for filter and 20% for espresso. Mostly light roasted coffee and looking for high clarity. What are your thoughts?

I’m tempted to get one, but I have plenty of grinders already (Niche, Ode with SSP, Orphan OG, Option-O Remi), and I don’t think it’ll get used enough to justify it (the hand grinders mainly get used for travel, with my Flair Pro).
Of course what I should do is buy a P64 and then sell the Ode and the Niche. We’ll see.

If my primary use is going to be pulling a couple double shots A-day and a 6 cup mocha pot as my alternate for larger batches, or perhaps several shots on a Bambino Plus, wuld I burn this unit up? I'm also kinda worried about overclocking it on those weekends days when both of us are up and around and drink several cups of coffee... I fell in love with the Lagom Mini when it was 1st being reviewed and Out of stock but I became very leery when all of the issues cropped up especially with people stressing it's only good for a couple shots A-day... I had already been sincerely shopping things to compete directly with the Niche Zero or Mignon series for the last couple of years as I did my research on what setup I wanted (how I found you).
Would you suggest I just commit to the Niche Zero since I also occasionally do other brew methods and want a stand alone multi use grinder?

Hi Kyle.. I know its been 1 year since u posted this video..But ya, want to share my thoughts... I am from Malaysia.. I have been using the Lagom Mini for roughly a while now..
And yes, I managed to stall my mini, and that's when I first started out where I mistakenly taken 0.8 of a turn as 8 small dots when grinding for espresso, so when it kept jamming my linea micra and after 5-6 trials, one after another (with 8 small dots setting), then ya.. it started to get quite warm and finally stalled, but what I want to share is, even it stalled, by opening up the space (increasing to 10-12 dots) it kinda re-grind back without switching off and on, which I knew I was working it too hard, so I stopped (then went back to the manual where it actually meant 0.8 of a revolution). Well, not a great experience, but just sharing my stress at the time.
So, my thought is, unless we are grinding for super fine coffee like Turkish grinds, this grinder won't stall at all.. as I had tried 0.65 revolution and back to back 10 espresso shots, no issues (dint even get warm, kinda an indication for me to stop grinding and let it rest)
Well, just sharing my experience so others don't have to go through what I went through..😬😅

Is this lagom mini a variable RPM machine? If not, how low is the RPM, I want lower RPM for clarity and do not care how long grinding takes. thanks. Also, how does the moonshine burr compare to a flat burr for clarity; some are saying it really makes the conical better. I want higher clarity for lever espresso and I roast light roasts. @Kyle Rowsell came back with a new question. Your personal recommendation Niche vs Mini... I intend to pull at minimum one shot A-day probably 2 possibly 4 fairly regularly. My secondary brew method is A 6 cup mokapot. I do occasional pour overs and the neighbor brings her Drip-o-later for board game nights. I am afraid I might burn the Lagom Mini up but its versatility, Obvious appeal to both you and Lance and it's compact size are all massively appealing to me 🥲. I'm not seeing much about how much brew grinding you can do with it just that you aren't supposed to pull many shots per day.
      Thank you.

Very interesting video as always. Definitely looking towards ur Burr Coating video! Which one between the two 48mm would you think is best for 100% espresso brewing?
Both my best friend and GF will be buying a "Gaggia Classic Pro" later this year and fully upgrade them. I was then looking for the best affordable espresso grinder for them. Hey would only be doing 2 cups a day, and my GF 3 cups on avg. We all live alone so no need of something that can withstand 100g/day or do espresso for 5 persons at the same time if you see what I mean.
As always, quality over quantity and so far I haven't seen anything that seems to be his good for that price! I gave her the Sette 270Wi from my mom since I got her the new "Eureka Oro" that's obviously better but 2x more also than the Option-O so can't be compared. The DF64 looks like some fugly plastic junk and I don't trust the Chinese, nor something that's avg out of the box and needs SSP burr upgrade right away or even more mods.
That's why I don't see what would be my other options if they don't want to spend 1000$CAD. By the way also... Why the heck is Option-O that popular and in demand, yet one of the few brands to always be BACKORDERED and available almost nowhere?!? Can't they hire more people, improve their manufacturing process and build more of them already?

Which refractometer is that? It looks like the one from Aliexpress. Do you know how precise it is compared to more expensive ones?
(You should review the Mac studio 😁)

It is the aliexpress one. It’s okay! Not bad for the price. My vst died so it’s holding me off for now.
As for the studio…. Haha we’ll see. I’ve thought about starting a second channel for random vids. Maybe someday.

If you ever get your hands on another VST you should do a comparison between them.

So Kyle, in your opinion, I take it that the Ode never really lived up to it's promise? I got one with the version 1.1 burrs and was disappointed that it didn't even come close to standing up to my C-40 or K-max (and not because of the grind range which is perfectly fine for my pour over style).
