    The "Loader 64" folder can be removed. It includes stuff for Win/Mac/Linux for connecting this cart to a PC for debugging...something you can't do anyway unless you mod the board. Changing wallpapers is easy. Press the DOWN C and it asks you if you want to use the selected wallpaper...done. Just figured I would chime in since mine arrived today. The one that I received is a newer microSD model, but it works the same. Great cart!

    I've had the ED64 plus for well over a year loaded with the better part of the 64 library on it. I imaged the original sd to a better brand sd and archived the image. I have had zero problems with it. All saves work perfectly, once one learns the details of the different save features, and it plays perfectly. It's a beautiful thang!

    Glad to see the Super 64 has a regular SD interface. I just got my ED64+ from the post office and getting the micro SD card to latch is a bit frustrating, though it's not as flimsy as I thought. If I'm to get another flashcart, it'll be this one with its firmware switched out for Alt64 since it's basically a knockoff ED64+.

      You won't regret it (in my case I got it 2 years ago as ED64Plus), it works like a charm and almost all games boot just fine, and you can play some rom hacks like Smash Remix or Randomized games like the 2 Zeldas and Super Mario 64... just make sure you have an expansion pack, as most hacks needs it to work, the same for prototypes like Mortal Kombat Trilogy (the prototype features unmasked Sub-Zero instead of Cage for example).

    Hey, a correction: Any N64 can output any video mode. You CAN load PAL roms on an NTSC console, and NTSC ROMs on a PAL console. I'm using the Super64 myself with a PAL N64 and play NTSC ROMs on it just fine. Your specific TV might not be able to handle a PAL signal, but that doesn't mean it's not possible.

    • @PikangsFutaba
      @PikangsFutaba 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      In the end it comes if your display device can support both NTSC and PAL, as the console itself has no issues (aside of putting the cart in the correct mode for a USA/JPN console in NTSC or EUR console in PAL to start booting the games), so far only 1 game I was interesting doesn't work for me (Puyo Puyo Sun) but is not a big loss compared to what I can actually play that I couldn't back in the day or nowdays because of the stupid prices they ask for some of the games.

    • @blah7403
      @blah7403 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah he is talking nonsense, you can load PAL versions on American NTSC console and vice versa as long as your display works with 50/60 Hz. I have PAL console and play 60Hz NTSC games.

    For anyone thinking of getting this specifically for Super Mario 64 speedrunning. This works for the Usamune rom and that should be all you need. The barrier to entry for running and recording runs of this game on the N64 is already high enough with all the cables, worrying about a good stick if you're trying the eBay lottery, splitters, etc. that $200 just to get some decent practice tools is ridiculous. It's not like you're gonna use it for anything else, though if you do want to run more than just Usamune then by all means get the X7 for the most convenient experience.

    When FPGAs getting more cable and a smaler chip can do more an omni FPGA like the size of a GBA cart or whatever is the smallest that coule be placed into adapters would likely be the best way to stretch out hardware and reduce cost.

      Well, nodays ED64 Plus should have minor issues with Pokemon Stadium 2 but those are not enough to say that you should use the OG cart instead, I think the same can be said for Resident Evil 2, as far as I know, the only concern is to reset the console on games that don't use controller pack to save progress and also that some romhacks, translations or prototypes that are starting to appear might not run at all (one of the MKT prototypes must be fixed to make it work on ED64 Plus for instance), and you may want to have a 2nd SD with an alternative firmware to backup your controller pack data in case you only have 1, that way you can play more games that needs the controller pack to save their data (particulary most sports game that requieres a fully empty controller pack to save the data).

      @@DOOM31520 Regardless of the save metod (except for the games that must use a controller pack like Castlevania Legacy of Darkness USA or EUR) you need to reset the console to return to the cart. menu (yes, there's no need to hold the button, press it like if you want to actually reset the game), once you see the directory screen again (like if you want to change the game you want to play) you're good to go to turn off the console, as the save file is created or updated (you can check the saves directory if you want to make sure the data was saved, but you don't need to do that actually).

    I think something to know is that the voltage is a higher pull on everything other than the official Everdrive, that added voltage can in the long term damage your system. However it's not going to break in in a day, probably not a year, possibly never. But it is a bit of a risk and will shorten your N64s overall life cycle. Though again I have never had an N64 just die on me and these things are pretty sturdy.

    • @brandonkick
      @brandonkick 3 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      A bit of a misnomer in the world of flash carts.
      The danger is a 3.3V flash cart (which they all are) running on a system designed for 5V operation. The problem is that extra power left over from the cart only needing 3.3V while a regular cart needs 5V is going somewhere, most likely dissipated as heat via a voltage regulator.
      The N64 and GBA for example, run on 3.3V and the flash carts use slightly MORE power than that. In this instance, on of two things would happen. The system would blow a fuse from over drawing current, like any other standard electronic would OR the system would simply consume more power than normal. It doesn't hurt a GBA at all, just hampers battery life. With the N64, since they run hard wired to an outlet in your home, the systems most normal response would be a blown fuse from current overdraw.
      I do suppose aging components in your N64 power supply might cause a bit of an issue with a flash cart drawing slightly more power than a normal cart... but I bet at worst the flash cart just wouldn't work properly or at all. A standard game would work just fine.
      This isn't a fault of the flash cart though. It's a fault of an N64 power supply that was needing repaired anyways. Again, it's not like the flash cart only needed 3.3V and the system expected it to draw 5V and had to send that extra power off somewhere to be lost to thermal dissipation... I can see that being a bigger problem.

    • @heyguysitsshea
      @heyguysitsshea  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Lol understandable. So with Aliexpress I made sure to check the seller ratings and customer reviews, i found one guy that had like an 82% rating and immediately clicked away because i knew it was just going to be trouble. I found one seller with a 99.8% rating and at the time had sold just under 400 everdrives, so I felt safe ordering from them, and both everdrives I ordered came to me flawlessly. Just keep in mind that aliexpress does ship from china and we are in the midst of covid, so it might take a month or two to get to you. As far as region locking goes, the cart has spaces in the bottom to allow it to fit in any console from any region. The japanese and north american n64s are completely identical aside from the plastic bit, so the cart will work with whatever you decide to put it in

    An interesting video. I didn't know anything at all about the Super64. I have just one question: if I try to play a PAL game with Super64 in an NTSC system, what would happen? Would it crash, or run the game with messed up video/audio or something?

      I guess I cant really answer that question, I don't own a PAL n64 to experiment with. I feel like it should work fine, but I really have no idea. If I were you I'd check around youtube or google to see what the consensus is. My advice is stay away from reddit opinions tho, I mentioned it in this video, but the n64 subreddit is not objective when it comes to anything that isnt the krikzz everdrive. Actually I recently bought an Everdrive 64 X7, I have the option to download their licensed PIKO ROM's on the purchase of an Everdrive + their custom firmware, then you have to buy an SD card added to your order, however I know a friend who gives SD cards (for example a 32 GB SD card costs like $15 bucks at Stone Age Gamer while at my local electronic shop it's well around under $5 bucks) that's why I don't order SD cards from them so they don't pre-install their licensed ROM's and firmware, it's a rip off!
    Still that's the only place where I bought my Everdrive, the reason why I ordered the x7 model it's because I sold my previous x5 (v2.x) it's because a friend really wanted an Everdrive 64 for himself since he loves the N64 so much, and I sold it with SD card included, so he's way content their heart than me haha...
    Well Can't wait to play some Dobutsu no Mori now that has RTC and I'm curious to see how's the N64 DD games look as well :)

      I have a NES everdrive from Ali-express and it works just fine for me, but some ROMS won't work, for the most part are either hacks (very few of them but some are a big lose like Rockman 4 Minus Infinity) or Bootlegs (like World Heroes 2 or the awful Action 52... the later has a workaround to play the crappy games, nowdays hard to find the splitted ROMS, I could help in that regard as I was lucky to get the ROMS before it was deleted from the page I got them).
      And I can also say that the SD2SNES Pro (FXPAK) from Ali-express also works like a charm, except for the auto region patch for PAL games (I haven't give a shot to NTSC-J games yet, only NTSC USA) without having those patched to bypass the region lock.
