The most important aspect of Tomiki's aikido is to break ukes balance completely, otherwise its just empty technique with the "uke" doing all the work as seen in most styles of aikido!! It has been seriously neglected in my opinion and why Aikikai "aikido" is considered ineffective by other MA and the rise of new MA such as BJJ and MMA!!...This has been well known from my own practice since 1974. Mr Sato does it as we were taught!! ... Avoid, break balance, technique... I always look at ukes body being raised upwards before the throw. If it's not there, absolutely no chance of success....

@Barath Murali In actual combat we would attack with atemi as well as kansetsu waza ... There are many techniques in the Tomiki kata's that teach this in preemption, but in this example video, he is teaching a balance breaking kata... Tomiki's aikido is more Aiki jujutsu orientated... There are 6 koryu katas comprising of 174 techniques which also include weapons.... For self-defence, it is exceptionally good... Believe me, I have used Tomiki style techniques in real life and I can attest to their effectiveness!!... I also practised judo, old-style karate, and amateur boxing during my military service, so to say that you cannot use techniques or they are outdated, is a complete misnomer... I also respect BJJ but it still has its limitations too... One on one it has its advantages, but no good when you are in a situation where there are more than just one attacking!! Horses for courses Barath... All martial arts have their strong & weak points... It's making the best of any given situation and adapting techniques to what actually works.... In other words common sense.... You have to study the whole system before making assumptions that it's all like this....
