  • This movie was demonstrated by Tomiki Kenji sensei and Ohba Hideo sensei who were two of the most important people of Aikido history, I believe. Especially, Tomiki sensei established Japan Aikido Association (people usually call it Shodokan Aikido or Tomiki Aikido) which has the students all over the world today.
Unfortunately, I don't know much about the details of this video. It said Tomiki sensei was 7th degree of Judo. As you know Kodokan gave him 8th degree in 1971. So this movie must have been made before that. And the words of Judo Taiso appeared at first. 'Judo Taiso' exactly means exercises of Judo. I guess this movie might have been made for Judo students.
I believe that this movie is definitely valuable. Enjoy!
    NOTICE: This movie is silent.
If you are interested in Shodokan Aikido, please check their website! And if you go to Japan, please visit their Dojo!

Fascinating video. To look around the art I study as Tomiki and to see it's evolution.

i actually found tomiki style aikido to be the most fun to learn and pratise and the most effective defense to use on the street. its not as hard a style as the others, its the only modern style of aikido and the only style that incorperates competition as aikido originates from the samuri and is traditionally a very rigid and devestating art origionally used to replace swordplay in times of peace

There is nothing flowery or fancy about Shodokan. Its probably the least "flowery" Some of the techniques are very direct as they are made for the fast pace. I like Yonshinkan (never had the oportunity to train it) I think some of the Shodokan training will certainly give your Aikido an edge.

tomiki aikido is a flowery, fancy spin of aikido designed to look pretty and thus enable it to be a sport. Softer flowing circles reminds me of ball room dancing :) beautifull to watch but doesn't touch on yoshinkan aikido...I am hooked on this martail art (the hard style) and find myself constantly thinking through techniques even when im out shopping or at work...

The key thing missed with Tomiki is respect,Lots of people can't stand to see others enjoy their life's activities Tomiki is a soft style .Its enjoyed by many if people don't like this art then sadly its not for them. I love it because it teaches respect kindness to man kind.Where it helped me the most was mental focus and learning how to think flexible and flow around any threw problems in my life.

Excellent video. Despite shomen uchi technique is different, Tomiki Sensei is really good. Every discipline changes in time and aikido is not the different. Because we do not know why or for whom this movie was taken, we can't understand the backround.
    Thank you for sharing!

When i start pushing my fist toward someone's face, a lot of times their initial response is "I'm being punched, i need to grab this fist before it hits me." And from that response, you can go from there. In my dojo, we try not to wait for the uke to grab: we initiate that forces the uke to respond because they believe they are under attack. If they don't grab or block or make contact with that hand, it'll go ahead and strike them; if they do grab/block, technique follows.

The one's that want to control you to punch you do. The grab at the hands is the extreme. These are releases and can be done from a grab anywhere on the body. I can see how someone looking at this for the first time may not get the jist of what it is showing.

@Mathewallison007 I did other arts such as boxing, wing chun and goju ryu, judo as a teenager. All had their uses....I have studied Tomiki's way of doing things and found them very effective..... Much more so than the so called traditional stuff you see now..... I have found that true Tomiki converts do develop strong body core and basics and real so called 'ki' without doubt..... That is I still practice it now for myself at 58 yrs , it has kept me strong, healthy and most of all effective.

aikido changed alot since this film, partly due to Ueshiba changing alot. The techniques being shown (and the training method) are very much like aiki-jitsu (as of course aikido was originally).

@mauriteinsh what do you mean with "glad that I practice 'AIKiKAI AIKIDO'"? Except the fact that this video is OLD ... perhaps from 1930 ... it is exactly the same Aikido that is done in Aikikai in our days.
Don't mix up the Vidoe showin formal Kata with some fancy stuff you see in our days. The construction of the techniques, the foot work in that video is perfect and it is the same I would expect from my students ... and yes, I do Aikikai Honbu Dojo Aikido.

Tomiki is the proof that Aikido is not combat effective. You see that in a match the "defenders" have much more trouble executing a technique than in other Aikido styles. Can anyone explain this?

I also trained in JKD BJJ Vale Tudo & even Karate as a kid, non had for me the beautiful fountain in the spiritually rich garden that was filled with babbling water& peace. If u r training N Tomiki then train because u love.If u want to hurt people thin this is the wrong art. Tomiki made me stronger in BJJ because I understood little truths about movement flow, balance and joint manipulation.

Tomiki took cues from judo. Too old fashioned maybe. But tomiki people use hakama when doing sword kata.

  • @BigJasonStud
    @BigJasonStud 15 ปีที่แล้ว

but these aspects also make it unpractical wiith our current laws. simply u will go to jail if you starts breaking ppls arms and wrists which is what traditional aikido is designed to do.tomiki style aikido is the only form of modern "self defense" - is literally has no punches or kicks and teaches how to effectively defend against those kinds of attacks as well as knife/gun attacks. if u cant draw ur gun or sword,,

it isnt and youll never see a video to show it is because that video doesnt exist. When aikidoka or any grappling based system spar, they all will just be wrestling but those who do only aikido will be useless because guess what, they never spar all out, even shodokan doesnt do it.
