    Thanks for the tip. Was wondering on white vs other colors. Got a bunch of old light latex from painting interior that I was going to toss. This could save me money plus doing something useful with waste.

      Why not exterior latex paint? It seems like a fungicide would be beneficial.
      We just put in some bare root fruit trees (from @DaveWilsonTrees 😊) and I was thinking of making a thinned paint/whitewash using Kilz primer.
      I don’t have the time or numbers of trees to experiment, so curious as to your answer.

    You can wrap them, commercially they use cardboard milk carton sleeves to protect young trees from sunburn. These techniques don't protect form boring insects though.

    I always wondered why the orange groves alway had white paint on the trunks? I thought it was just to make them look cool 😎 not just keep them cool.

    You can only use indoor, water soluble paint, which is fairly benign. But there are organic paints out there.

    ok, well the info I saw indicated it was wrapped with some kind of cloth & that it did protect from borers. I am glad to know there is organic paint that can be used - much safer.

      It's probably a fungicide that would not be for ultimate human consumption, I'm guessing.

    • @richardmang2558

      I put white 4" plastic drain pipe over my very young , freshly planted trees. To protect the trunk, with the branches exposed above the pipe. The trees have to be small to be able to bunch the leaves up with one hand and slip the pipe over with the other hand. I cut a piece of pipe about two feet long , I do this to protect the young tree from rats and rabbits from chewing the bark off. I use the white colored pipe so it reflects the sun. This is the 4" white round plastic drain pipe for burying underground that rain gutters drain into. This type of pipe is very soft and it cuts easy with a sharp knife, I use my big long Bowie knife to cut the pipe. I suppose it could be put around a more mature tree trunk if you cut the pipe down one side so it could be split open and slip it around the trunk instead of trying to slide it down over the top.

    You mentioned not to use an exterior latex because it has a fungicide, I would think that a fungicide would be a good thing for a fruit tree as long and it does not hurt the tree.

    This is what I do to protect the avocado tree trunks.Once a year after harvest time at the end of the summer,I will wash the trunks with a pressure sprayer with the engine at idle,not too much water pressure,them I will spray 2 ounces of diazinon insectice in 4 galons of water and 2 ounces of agro-penetrant.one week later all the trunks are painted with white water based paint,3/4 paint.1/4 water. this protect the tree trunks nicely. I do use exterior latex paint. It cost too much to see a healthy tree producing avocados to let it be unprotected on the trunk. Sorry for my bad English, it is not my native language.

    Friends, I wish to talk with you about this. When he said INTERIOR latex, he gave a reason. That suits me just fine.
    When he talked about those bugs he mispronounced and on the screen misspelled them. They are borERs. Not bores. We have them in forestry too.
    And last, the point of this whole video: I thought it was SUNSCALD, not sunburn, and that it was a winter problem, not summer.
    If this is news to you, I will be glad to explain it in a friendly way.
    Are you sure you want to pick at the loose bark in that tree wound? What about CODIT when you expose those new, raw places?
    In any case, I am glad you are painting the trunks.

      Exposing those areas allows them to be covered and ridding the area of dead tissue avoids attracting pests that would like to eat it.

    Toxic latex paint on a fruit tree?

    • @michaeldougfir9807
      @michaeldougfir9807 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Doctor Shred: NOT toxic. He explained that. Besides, latex is a tree product.

    • @shred46
      @shred46 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Latex paints use mostly water as a solvent, which make them a much less toxic alternative to oil-based paints. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency states that water-soluble interior latex paints are low in toxicity if ingested in small quantities. They also clean up with water, so cleaning does not require harmful solvents.
      Types
      While interior latex paint is not highly toxic, exterior latex paint may
      contain mercury for use as a preservative and bacteria-killing biocide.
      Though paint companies have voluntarily removed mercury from exterior latex formulas, it is still legal for them to contain mercury.
      For this reason, exterior latex paint should never be used indoors. This
      is to avoid any possible risk of prolonged exposure to mercury, which
      can affect the nervous system of both children and adults.
      Effects
      The main issue with interior latex paint is not with the paint itself, but with the fumes released by the paint as it is drying and over time. The fumes are made of organic compounds, or VOCs, which are gases like benzene, formaldehyde and toluene. The actual gases depend on the formula of the paint. Generally, the more heavily tinted and glossy the paint, the more VOCs are released. Theories/Speculations
      VOCs
      cause reactions in most everyone, but especially affect children, the
      elderly, those with compromised immune systems and pregnant women. The American Pregnancy Association recommends that pregnant women should not paint or be around paint fumes. VOCs, especially formaldehyde, are blamed for causing headaches, nausea, fatigue and irritations of the eyes, nose and throat. According to a 2006 article in the Vancouver Sun, VOCs may even be responsible for liver disease and lung cancer.

    • @johncos1068
      @johncos1068 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @D Singh And it says not toxic. We could have a discussion about VOC's but we are talking about painting trees outside. That plus the how ever many billion people that live inside houses painted with interior latex paint. Being afraid of painting your tree with indoor latex paint because you think its toxic is ridiculous.
