Just found your channel today - I've inherited a couple of toolboxes full of old tools from my father recently and it seemed such a shame to let them go to waste since they are all coated in rust. I was looking to see how easy it would be to restore them. Your channel is very peaceful to watch. It looks a satisfying process and has helped inspire me to take the time and effort to have a go at this myself. Great work - especially with no narration but light humour too. Perfect. Thanks for making the effort to create and post these.
Hey JR, thanks for your kind words! I wish you all the best and a lot of fun restoring the tools :-) If you got any questions, feel free to contact me. My email adress is in the Channel Info. Thanks! 🙂
@@misterpatina Found a Cornwell 9/16"x1/2" double box end wrench I left beside a piece of equipment last year - gonna have to try some of these tricks on it this weekend.
My father used to have a textile factory and these wrenches came with the German knitting machines he had. I have a few of them. I keep one in my trunk because it fits most lug nuts on tires.
That thing has probably snapped since this video was made, if it has been used for anything. Needed to be tempered after heating in order to not be like glass.
Hey guys, I wanted to say thank you for all of your support! That gives me a lot of energy and motivation! If theres anything you got for me (critic, hints and tips, lovely words, tools to restore or just a nice comment) feel free to leave it in the comment section or contact me by email! PS: If you think i need a more powerful burner, hit the Like! :-)
This is nice as an ornamental tool. I say this because the blue colour from heating would suggest a temperature above 340°C and quenching from that temp makes the metal brittle. Please beware if using this as intended.
Painting of blue background is easier if you strongly dilute paint - probably twice or triple. Surface tension make it cover the whole recession. Color might be transparent, but it is easy to repeat. This technic strongly depends on paint formula, not always works
And for white lettering you can take flat piece of wood, wrap it tightly by cloth and soak it by white paint, then stamp letters. This antique recipe was used long ago for embossed car license plates renewing
Hey Vadim! Thank you so much for your hints! I especially like the hint with the wood and the cloth, i think ill use it the next time! Thank you so much!
@@misterpatina you should create an Amazon affiliate site. I was looking for some of the tools and products you use, I'd much rather some of that profit goes back to you!!
Q: Is there a reason that you remove rust before you sandblast? Wouldn't it just be quicker to sandblast the rust off? (just starting out on this tool restoration thing....)
Thanks! The oil for bluing was an engine oil, 10w40 The oil for the anvil was an universal oil for sewing machines The grease is an industrial grease from „nigrin“. Hope I could answer your questions 🙂
@@misterpatina just perfect, have some tools from meine opa, but the are rusty so I look at this video a couple of times. I think there is a good chance to get to use it
Hey Teacher, that’s a good question. I would recommend, lay the tools in white vinegar for a couple of days. After that give them a nice brush with a drill wirebrush or a regular wirebrush. After that, lay them in oil for 12 hours and dry them afterwards. That should be an easy way without (many) tools :)
@@misterpatina Thank you, thank you, thank you! My Dad was a truck driver/mechanic. He had every tool imaginable. When he passed, my brother took what he wanted and left me the rest. I have bought new wrenches, but would mean a lot to restore and use his. 😊
Guys! I am not sure but isn´t hardening the wrench the wrong way?! It will break instead of bending. (Yes i know its a big wrench and you need a lot force to bend/break it)
Hey bro nice job love the blue and white on the wrench too. They spelled chrome wrong so you'd better send it to me..... What is the 25 for on it LMFAO. Nice job.
I have a whole set of "Hazet 450" open ended and "630" ring spanners since the 1960s. Super quality! Nice "restoration", but in my view grossly overdone. This is a run of the mill tool, not a museum piece! The finish you got is not original at all, and there never was any paint on those spanners.

a cheap Warrior Paint removal disk for a drill or a Right Angle grinder will polish off the rust FAST and make the metal shine like chrome !

Hey man, I love how this one turned out! That has to be by far the most legendary tub used for bluing something on all of you tube haha.
Thanks Bro! 😄 yeah, couldn’t figure out till today what’s the motive about. A bee a flower? But hey, it’s heat resistant :)

Do you use anything like Simple Green?
Great video! Will the rust come back again bro?
Thanks! Guess in a long time it would be possible that it will rost, but till today it doesnt ;-)
I am still curious what the name of the tool is that you used to do the lettering, please? Thank you very much!
Hey Leslie, it’s a touch up pen 🙂
What brand and model is that drill press clamp for the drill?
Nice Chanel 👍
What Oil and grease are you using??

Oh „fluid Writer pen“ is basically the Name, there are some brands, but the product is mostly the same. Should be around 15$.
Keine Angst vorm kleinen Pinsel, ist er aus Naturhaar dann schreibt er die Schrift besser und sauberer - sonst super Arbeit!!!
25+28mm wrench, hmmm, not an standardized size, for European standards. However , 28mm fits on a 5/8 whitworth bolt.

I’ve never did chrome plating, since it’s a more complicated process than nickel plating.
