      maybe a bad play there, a neighbor had a bird box with similar spikes on it, and the cat from the house across the road from them got injured while climbing on it, the owner of the cat successfully took the birdbox owning neighbor to court and claimed vet expenses plus unnecessary distress, there are other ways to protect the box from cats, especially with how vindictive people can be nowadays

So i tapped the window and he knew he was busted, froze up looking towards the house. When i went outside he was sitting on the ground trying to look innocent like nothing going on here. As i got up close to him though he suddenly sprinted away.
      Little jerk. Eh well he was just being a cat. He never did that again though, probably knew that we could be watching at any time, he wouldn't know.

    Hello bird friend,
    I'm from Munich, Germany, and for more than 10 years I take care for about 25 nist boxes. I'd like, if I may, to give you an advice for your nist box design. The distance from the bottom to the lower edge of the entrance hole should be at minimum 17 cm, better 20 cm, so predators like cats cant reach down to the chicks, even when the nest is stuffed with nesting material. Also I fixed most of my boxes on long roof laths, minimum 2.5 m, so it's very difficult for cats to climb them. If you want to, you can provide the boxes, after the autumn cleaning, with dry hay or moss to get the birds a more comfortable place for the night.
    bye and good luck for your fluffy friends

    As a cat lover I just want to say: this is why you should keep your cats inside. Cats are an invasive species in 85% of the world. They are responsible for decimating the local fauna of any place they live. Our fluffy feline friends are apex predators with very limited predators above them on the food chain especially in urban environments. Unless you have a barn with a mouse problem you probably shouldn’t have unsupervised outdoor cats. You can leash train a cat or build a catio if you want your cats to have outdoor time which will help native bird populations recover.
    Thank you for coming to my ted talk.

    • @allthumbs3792
      @allthumbs3792 2 ปีที่แล้ว +25

      100% agree! Not only is keeping cats indoors important for birds/local fauna but any vet will tell you your cats will be safer, healthier and live longer indoors. My two cats are given plenty of inside stimulation and toys. But for windows, they have never known the outside, and they don't miss what they don't know! No cars, no diseases, no dogs, no poisoned rodents, no coyotes. I don't love the cat box but I do love and respect my cats.

    • @Shaun137
      @Shaun137 2 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      @K N Maybe that should also apply to humans as well as we are more destructive than cats will ever be.. . Also I am a cat lover, who fitted his cats with a stretch collar with a bell on it.

    • @Tinyvalkyrie410
      @Tinyvalkyrie410 2 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      @@Shaun137 cat bell collars only make a very minimal difference because cats are ambush predators. Depending on the style of hunting your cat prefers, you will be saving 50% of their prey at maximum, and as little as 2% at minimum. I’m glad you love your cats, but please keep them indoors. Outdoor cats live half as long as indoor cats, and are responsible for significant devastation of wildlife. Keeping them inside is good for cats and for other animals as well. Humans are destructive. Letting cats go outside is just one of the ways we prove that every day.

    • @jatojo
      @jatojo 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree that house cats can have an influence, locally, on the bird life. But using a nest box as an example in this context, is pretty absurd. A bird in a nest box is even more unnatural than having a cat outside.

    • @Tinyvalkyrie410
      @Tinyvalkyrie410 2 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      @@jatojo nest boxes are replacements for the trees that would be otherwise available. Nest boxes are not natural, but they are a way to mitigate replacing forests with houses, which is unnatural to begin with.

    Good idea putting those pigeon spikes on the roof. It's best to get it done now, as nesting is not too far away. I think they should stop the cat, fingers crossed!! ...🤞👍🏻

      @@rainicascadia5514А сможешь поймать? Живу постоянно летом и часто зимой в дачном поселке. Мой дом и участок - в лесу. На моём участке с высоким забором тоже есть лес, сосны, берёзы. В России это нормально. У всех есть домашние кошки. Они необходимы, иначе мыши сожрут деревянный дом. Особенно зимовать эти грызуны пытаются проникнуть во все постройки, которые есть на участке. Есть сарай для инструментов, гостевой домик и дровник. Есть подвал для хранения продуктов. Мыши будут хозяйничать повсюду, если не истреблять их на участке. Никто в посёлке не держит кошек в доме. Также появляются одичавшие кошки, они плодятся сами по себе, не все выживают, особенно зимой. Морозы бывают до -25 С и снег лежит до метра. Не знаю, как, но часть кошек выживает. Я их вижу круглый год! Абсолютно дикие. Пыталась приручить маленькую кошечку, прикормила, схватила, занесла в дом, она сошла с ума, бросалась на стены и чуть не выбила окна... Опасные когти, нельзя брать в руки. Вокруг лес. Кошки кроме мышей, ловят и жрут птиц. Видела, поймала прямо на лету! Также большой дикий кот, породы "домашний", может легко задушить зайца. Есть желание попробовать такого поймать и отвезти к ветеринару, чтобы кастрировать? Даже если получится, для дикого кота в природе - это смерть. Заодно кастрируйте ещё лисиц, они ведь тоже ловят и едят птиц.

      @FaithG-tx2hw Yeah I don't like it when people let their cats outside when they know that their cats go out and attack random animals for sport. My cats do go outside but they aren't hunters at all (all females), they just lay outside in the sun, walk around the neighbourhood and then go inside lol.

    • @Stibly
      @Stibly 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @FaithG-tx2hw I do watch them lol. I wouldn't let them outside if I knew they were hurting animals. The most they do is the occasional insect in the house or garden. You can't assume everything from just a TH-cam comment.
      Edit: You really think I have rare insects in my garden? Lmao.
      Again, I wouldn't let my cats outside if I would think they're hurting the environment and stuff. They don't hunt, they have no reason to, they entertain each other, and you don't even know what colour or breed they are. Not all cats are the same.

    There are really too many cats in our gardens and neighbourhoods nowadays. They are no. 1 killers of garden birds where I live. They kill up to 200 million of them every year! Everyone and their mother needs to have a cat nowadays and let them roam free without a bell around their neck so that birds might have a slight chance to hear them before they attack. Most of them are fat and lazy because they get fed too much at home but they still have their killer instinct and go after tiny birds now.
