  • Downtown is Houston Texas is expected to be the busiest part of the city but it's not. I have filmed in Houston on more than 5 occasions and there are always questions as to why the streets are empty, compared to other American cities.
PS: This video was filmed on Sunday and for a city as big as Houston with its population, it should not be this empty.
What do you think is the reason why Houston's downtown is usually always empty?
    About downtown Houston:
Downtown is the largest business district in Houston, Texas USA. It has been the city's commercial district since its founding in 1836. Downtown is home to nine Fortune 500 corporations and also a major destination for entertainment and recreation. Nine major performing arts organizations are located within the Theater District at prominent venues including Alley Theatre, Hobby Center for the Performing Arts, Jones Hall, and the Wortham Theater Center. Two major professional sports venues, Minute Maid Park and the Toyota Center, are home to the Houston Astros and Houston Rockets, respectively. Discovery Green, an urban park located on the east side of the district adjacent to the George R. Brown Convention Center, anchors the city's convention district.
Downtown is Houston's civic center, containing Houston City Hall and courthouses of Harris County, and a federal prison and courthouse. Downtown is also a major public transportation hub, lying at the center of the light rail system, park and ride system, and the metropolitan freeway network; the Metropolitan Transit Authority of Harris County (METRO) is headquartered in the district.

This is wild! 10, 20, 30 years ago and beyond the streets were filled with people buzzing with activity. I walked this area last fall and was shocked by the lifelessness, only saw a few handfuls of office and construction workers milling about, and homeless men trying to hit on me. These office buildings must be virtually empty, pandemic completely changed the landscape. Downtown was also a hub for the public transport (bus system), that must've changed as well. Ghost town indeed.

Nah. It was starting to become a ghost town after 1999 when construction for the rail started in downtown. That was the end of lively crowds. I remember before construction was a cool nite club named SPY and a Tex-mex eaterie named Cabo that many hung out. Also the State Bar. Many cool places to go before 1999. The pandemic just sealed its fate.

Downtown Is empty since it’s mainly office buildings with not much to do downtown unless there’s sports games or conventions going on.
This has been changing in recent years with more residential being built downtown and the plan to spend *$2B over the next 30 years to build an entertainment district that will be **_“3 miles in each direction”_* with an expansion to the convention center, and the *More Space Main Street 2.0 project* which will be completed in 2025, and the Astros themselves will also be building an *entertainment district* next to Minute Maid Park.
Other notable projects are *Buffalo Bayou East* and the *EaDo Redevelopment* , all aimed at attracting and connecting people.

There are two reasons Downtown is like this: No retail and no tourists. It’s a bit busier at night.

And also because of the underground tunnel. Although I filmed that on a Sunday which means no one was underground

@@fragilerovers New York City has the most modern subway system in the US, carrying millions of passengers, and the streets and sidewalks are extremely busy, where is the rally problem?

Well. I can tell you why the streets are empty. Well. It has parts The Metro Bus system is part to blame Before the rail system. All bus routes ran through out downtown There is a mall in the middle of downtown that bus routes no longer serve. The walk from the rail to the mall Well malls are empty with no shoppers. Co vid got office workers working from home and downtown businesses suffered and it caused a domino effect. Macys James Coney Island CVS Walgreens Mc Donald’s by the police station Popeyes Chicken. Are all gone. Thanks. To the smart downtown minded city Hall who helped to make Greyhound and Megabus go away too. I just had to comment on the city that I remember And thanks for the video 🙏💐✅

Try doing better research bud. There is an entire tunnel system underneath downtown where people are walking with shops and restaurants

Those restaurants and shops close early though. They don’t stay open late at night unless it has changed now.

The description says this was a Sunday. Nothing in the tunnels is open on Sundays.

It was even emptier 40 years ago. Especially on weekends. It was like you had downtown to yourself.

Even small European cities have much more people than this. It is a shame that downtown Houston is so empty. I hope local politicians get their stuff together and make American cities people friendly again
