    I have fond memories of seeing these " Rainbow" cactus growing in the Santa Rita mountains south of Tucson Arizona. They grew in open grassy areas. That was a long time ago. About 1976. I've always loved them cause they have color in bloom or not!! Thanks for sharing this awesome cactus with us Lyn!!! From Morris park in the Ozarks to across the Emerald isle, 🌈😀HAPPY RAINBOWS!!! Peace,Love,Plants!!!!✌💖🌵🌸🌴🌹🌿

    Hi Lyn, you've really got me excited with this latest episode. Like many others:- this is my favourite cactus, and the reason why is due to its strong colour banding and enormous/colourful purple/pink flowers. I agree with you and Cactimania on the inclusion of crushed lava rock for the majority of desert cacti. Lava rock is like a natural fertiliser as it contains high levels of subsidiary minerals, which can wash into the soil easily when watering, freeing up as chemical ions which readily dissolve in the water, allowing cacti's roots to take them up and into the plant. I picked up a bag of pure lava dust from the slopes of Mount Etna in Sicily a few years ago while on holiday, and I can confirm the majority of cacti really like it and respond well. I avoid using too much in the mix on some alkaline loving species of Escobaria and Coryphantha as it is a little on the acidic side my batch. My mixes are also heavy on crushed grit and rock becouse of the critical need for fast evaporation and becouse the soil tends to gel like cardboard with slow drying and high humidity levels throughout the year. I was saddened to hear of this form of mealy bug which destroyed your last specimen. I believe you featured it on an episode you posted some years back on this channel so that is a tragedy. However the plant you have here is very beautiful and moderately sized:- certainly looks at least 6-7 inches tall to this viewer, and I'm sure it is capable of producing lovely flushes of flowers later in the spring or summer. When I was in Organ Pipe national monument in AZ a few years ago, I looked everywhere beside the trails for this cactus and never found it. I think they are naturally found further East into southern New Mexico and parts of Chihuahua over the border in Mexico. I would absolutely love to see large stands of this cactus out in the wild, there's nothing quite like it.

    great, i got up out of my seat and moved one of my little Rainbow cactus, now in front of the shelve, it was hiding behind a big Cactus ( i like the colour so much i put it in that way i can see it all the time 😂😂😂, but its more important that my rainbow feels good over my staring all the time at it's colour 😅😅), so as i learned here it needs more and plenty of light and i moved it in front of the big one , and i just have to move my head a bit more to see the lovely colours 😂😂😂... thanks so much for this great video. It's taken over 2 years and still it teaches us 😜... Take care🥰

    Love this cactus Lyn, I found my one in a garden centre a few years ago and my eye was instantly drawn to it because of its purple colour, not flowered for me yet but it is quite a young one. It’s going to love being in the new mix too, thank you so much for the mention Lyn 😊 That mealybug you encountered sounds like a nasty one, hope I never see ones like that 😬 Thank you as always for sharing with us, from Edith & myself to you and Hans, stay safe and well and have a wonderful afternoon and evening ❤️😊🌵☀️🌼🌸🌺🏜

      Yes this particular cactus is a true standout and favourite for many enthusiasts and collectors alike. Although very similar to E. Pectinatus, that one doesn't have the strong red/purpley tones and bands that this variety has. It's a lovely plant that only gets better as it ages.

    Hi you guys! What's a very cool cactus. I'm almost five years in since I fell for all things cactus and I have yet to have a cactus bloom until recently- I think. It is a cactus that I found on the floor in a box store. The man had swept it into a pile of dirt. It had no pot or anyting so I had to save it. Funny thing is that it bloomed these little black puffs that look like feather dusters or something. LOL like it remembers it came from a pile of dirt on the floor! Is that a bloom?

    • @demonhalo67
      @demonhalo67 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It sounds like you have an Echinopsis Subdenudata. These cacti produce an unusual "black feathery lace" when ready to flower. Older plants may have several. These are actually concealed flower buds which are still developing, when ready:- the plant will produce a 2-4 inch stalk with a white Sea urchin flower. These cacti only need moderate part sun as they lack spines and are vulnerable to sunburn and epidermal scorching.

    • @desertplantsofavalon
      @desertplantsofavalon  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi there, the very top of this cactus can be more pale as its due to the new growth from the crown that grows out more pale and sometimes white until the fine new spines from the top of the crown harden off, as the new growth matures these fine spines will turn more of a deeper pink/red as they mature, the pale top will go red again once it has paused its growing from late Summer and Winter, thanks so much for watching, and wishing you a wonderful plant powered weekend XXXX

    I have had those mealybugs a couple times. I had to get ride of 3. I saved 5 though. It took lots of work everyday. It was very upsetting.

    Lyn I came across an old vid of yours with Echeveria Setosa in flower, mine is also flowering now, but Setosa looks more orange, mine are yellow, maybe a different variety? I've been trying to trace my Kalanchoe and I think it's K. Humilis? It's also flowering now, I knew you 'd be thrilled for me!! Haha always lovely to watch you 2 thanks for great videos xx : )

    Hi Lyn. It looks like a beautiful day in Ireland. 💕. Amazing cactus. Do those colour rings mean anything , like the age of the cactus? Very pretty. 😘

    • @desertplantsofavalon
      @desertplantsofavalon  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The weather has been amazing here in Ireland and K the past two weeks, I think we are having our Summer now haha :-D the rings usually increase with age as the plant grows taller too, I think the red coloured rings help to protect the cactus from strong sunshine and the red colour really comes out on them when the sun increases

    Thanks so much for another highly informative video. Lyn, would you recommend planting 3 baby rainbow hedgehogs in one big pot? Warm regards to you and Hans from Bakersfield, California!!!

      Hi Elmer :-D so happy you enjoyed the video :-D I think its definitely best to pot them up individually as they can be rot prone especially if they are planted up in a big pot, thanks so much for your wonderful comment and support and for watching and Hans and I are sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER to Bakersfield, California for a terrific Thursday XXXX
