The ninja while not superhuman was actually pretty good and had technique and decent reflexes

While in general the whole "real ninja" was absurd, you got to give him the little creddit he deserves, the high speed at the end of that test clearly shows he caught the ball and then brought his hands to his chest to buffer the ball stopping so all the momentum didn't his his hands.
But pretty much everything else was far more "cool party trick I can sometimes pull off" than "I'm a real ninja"
There is one thing I absolutely don't get about catching an arrow: Why should I even try to catch an arrow in a fight if it is much easier to just avoid it?

From what actaul iga and kuga ninjas have said on the matter no one was autistic enough to even train to catch arrows because thats retatded. The kuga scrolls talk about giga chads swatting arrows out the air with a wakasashi but this wasnt a general technique taught.

First: I've been aware of it for a long time, and nothing I've ever seen has come anywhere close to convincing me the one-inch punch is much more than pushing someone with your fist.
Second: The thing about arrow-catching reflexes is: apparently every healthy person's are pretty much the same, as far as things like "how quickly do you react to a loud noise or a flash of light" are concerned. What makes boxers and table tennis players and hockey goalies and damn near all sportsmen and women as good as they are is the ability to read and adjust to the physical cues (stance, body position, angle of bat/paddle/stick, etc.) their opponents are giving away before the fist or ball or puck actually moves on its final path to you. Some people are just naturally better at it, but all of the best got as good as they are through thousands of hours of immersion in their particular pursuits.
I remember a guy from high school volleyball who could read our setter (and anyone else's) like a book. He would call out where the ball was going before it had even touched the setter's hands. Freaked us out. And our setter was good - the only guy from our team who went on to play in college.
Regardless, all of that is of no use to a person catching an arrow. Even if he can see it, the release is so smooth and quick he can't anticipate it at all. The hockey goalie actually illustrates both perspectives - he puts himself and his equipment in position based on his anticipation and reading of the situation, so that when the shot comes, he's more than likely ready for it and can make the save; but when you watch slo-mo replays of a goalie catching a puck with the big sweeping glove hand that finishes up above his head, you'll see that usually the glove doesn't even start that move until the puck's already in it.

It's not about the speed of the arrow (alone) but about the distance it has to cross: The longer the distance, the more time the catcher has to react, aim etc. Besides: Has anyone ever seen someone catching an arrow without moving his arm? Who in the world would stand still like frozen and just move his fingers? - And the fans were right on one more point: If there are in fact people that actually can catch arrows and your machine cannot: Well, then your machine is just not fit for the task!
Bear in mind also that there are bows that are firing FAR faster than 100mph and people can still do it. A particular sect of monks in Okinawa (where Ninjas were born, btw) are trained in the art of catching arrows in mid-flight through a combination of repeated practice, meditation and honing of reflexes specifically for the art itself. Oral tradition is imperfect, but we know from archaeological evidence that the Yumi (the Japanese longbow) was firing arrows that were longer than traditional arrows, at nearly 38 inches. The amount of setup and prep for the archer lugging a bow as long as they were tall around would make the 'surround the intruder' test impractical if not impossible.
Exactly. Imagine arguing that the pitcher being 10 feet from the batter vs 60 feet barely makes a difference in pitch speed... It's not pitch speed! It's distance available to react.

I mean, they're right, they've debunked that specific theory, but the majority of complaints was about the lack of time for the person to try and catch the arrow.
The baseball analogy works well, because how could the catcher catch that ball if he were to respond within a couple of tenths, not to mention the batter, it's obviously the distance that gives them the time to respond.
Wait till they hear about how this idea of a ninja comes from the movies and not history.

The speed of the arrow may be the same. But the amount of time a person has to react is greater if the know its coming.

True, but using the technique where they breathe with the dart already loaded and held with their teeth, the dart would never meet any water.
As for the ninja, I think it's just that he seemed to take something extremely silly very seriously and people tend to react negatively to that. Like... yeah, he had some skill and was a good sport, but calling yourself a real life ninja unironically automatically makes me think you're an eccentric dumb-ass at best or a delusional psycho at worst :P
the speed might not drop off.... but the time to react is extended. 10 ft to 50ft is 5x as much time to react in. So... no. It's not about the arrow speed differing, but the time of the person being shot at to respond.

They would need the original audio files to remix it. You can't just move one voice to the centre without affecting all the other sounds happening at the same time (music, mainly, but also sound effects and live sound).
No no, the VO is on L and adam/jamie are on R, music is centered. This means that *they went out of their way* to mix it like this so you'd watch it on your phone/tablet so you couldn''t adblock the video because it's a garbage experience monitors or headphones. Myth busted 😂😂😂😂 PS: if you sum your audio to mono it's fine.
@@666tonsofsquirrels i think its an encoding problem. mid-side converted to stereo improperly. we're like listening to mono on the left and +right-left or something on the right.
I stopped this before the discussion at the end of talking about the arrow catch. Like the ninja made a point. Really, world fights would rarely see a ninja attack with a bow at that close. And an archer would not pull a full draw if their attack being attack that close. A full drew is would weaken you for the fight.
While I agree, sometimes it will happen as a full drew that close. It would be the outliers. Usually, the only reason a ninja is attacked by archers and it being a full drew would become like a guard in a tower. Under those circumstances, it'll only be the one archer that spotted him/her. Giving them enough time to catch it, they knew it was coming. Given Ninjas' tendency for stealth, they would usually be very concious of their environment. So it's for the ninja who saw an arrow coming the could catch it. What better way to instil fear in your enemies than to do something they thought was impossible.
The difference between lab and real world is the extra variables. I still say in reality a ninja probably did catch an arrow and that's where the myth comes from.
The kuga scrolls mentioned a few giga chads that swatted arrows out the air with a wskisashi. This was considered legendary feats done by legendary figures. Also the last iwa master pretty much said catching arrows wasnt a thing and the concept is fucking retarded.
Also the concept of the shinobi is simply ancient espionage. Their trade was information and sometimes assassination ussually of the subtle variety. Getting into battles and open armed combat armed was contrary to thier goals. Being outed or gaining a reputation would make you useless as a ninja.
Ghe exception and where alot of the misconceptions about ninjas came frlm the violent blood feud spanning centuries between the kuga and iwa ninja clans. They hated each other openly and it wss on sight. Ninja vs ninja foghts to the death was a thing. Although it usually just devolved into acts of war crimes. Theres an infamous massacre thats well known. So the ninja village politicd in naruto was pretty accutate. But they werent getting into open battles with the targets theyre paid tk spy on or smoke. They werent dtafted into wars as soldiers on thd front lines. They tasked with getting accurate enemy numbers and battle plans and tactics or taking out key ranked soldiers and intercepting messagers.

It's pre-mixed in mono but posted in stereo. Makes me think the audio person they've hired is on a tight crunch and can't keep up with the upload schedule. They ARE reuploading some of the episodes on later days, which makes me think they have the 'post schedule', and then someone fixing the audio later.

The thing is, there is 1 Ninja left in the world. If he did not already pass away. Either way. The last "real ninja" said, because this kind of skillset is no longer required these days, he decided not to train a successor and let the arts die with him. Compared to shitty "Hollywood Ninjas", a real ninja is supposed to be a lightweight, nimble acrobatic and athletic person, trained at using a lot of different tools as well as the art of disguise. But more importantly, instead of Hollywood's fighting ninjas, a ninja is a person, able to keep incognito, gather information, and get out. Or in the worst case scenario, get in, make sure the target will never get back up, and get out unseen. If they got caught, it was not about "fighting to survive", but rather having the honor and integrity to choose suicide and not giving out information to the enemy vs living, but becoming a traitor.
Another thing I remember reading into, all ninjas were vegetarians. Reasons being that meat increases your body odor compared to leafy greens. And you wanted to be undetectable visually, audibly as well as nasally. Nothing would be worse than trying to sneak into a stronghold, but getting found out by your smell. But on the other hand, I can guarantee you that samurai definitely smelled way worse than any ninja. At the same time, most ninjas would hide as farmers and in medieval Japan, farmers certainly didn't take a bath every day either.
AFAIK, for many ninjas it wasn't about being undetectable, it was about being non-suspicious. Your assignment could be e.g. "go to that castle, get them to hire you as a servant, construction worker or anything of that sort, and gather information, while living there for months/years and pretending to be a local person". So you'd most likely eat whatever local people eat, especially if eating 'in public', which I think would be the norm, as I don't think servants/construction workers etc. often got the privilege of a private room or such.
Though AFAIK many Japanese were vegetarian be it because shinto/buddhism both encourage vegetarianism, and because meat wasn't easily available to the poor. Livestock wasn't as common raised as say in medieval Europe, and hunting as usual was restricted and mostly limited to samurai. Fish were the only meat somewhat accessible to the commoners.
Saying "real ninja" feels a lot like saying "real viking".
You can get a competent re-enactor with a lot of historical knowledge and both technical skill and personal experience. But they don't go crossing the North Sea in longboats to trade or behead monks any more than that dude assassinates high stakes targets in Sengoku period Japan.

@@Knutzorian Probably don't even realize it's pre-mixed as mono, so they're splitting a mono track into stereo, and it doesn't work. I think they've been re-posting the episodes every now an again to try fixing the audio, so I'm sure they've noticed, but they have a schedule or something. IDK. So many possible reasons.

The problem is there are real life living descendants of both the iwa and kuga clans. The literal creators of ninjutsu and concept of shinobi. The kuga clan authored the infamous ninja scrolls. They still have a keeper of the scrolls. A job that use to be done by the most skilled member per generation aka the strongest ninja alive. Sadly the last iwa master alive has chosen not to take on an apprentice and pass down his skills and abilities to. Soo the iwa shinobi legacy dies during our lifetime. Which means technically the kuga has won the centuries long blood feud.

@@marjohnbuncio2782 To be fair though, if you want to create some kind of ripple effect kinda like a whip, with the tip or end of that ripple in this case being the fist, it does help to start that movement as far away as possible to let it build up.
The hip makes sense, as that seems to be the closest point for the punch to get the most push, as anything below the hips is just wasted energy (because of the hip joints dissipating any ripple effect).
But yeah, it is all hyped up anyway, just another movie/ninja trope.

Is the One Inch Punch a myth? No. As even they said, Bruce Lee did it. While he wasn't exactly an average person, he wasn't a mythical made up person.
Odd how they did not seem to really investigate the origins of the myths. Head to Nagano, Togakushi area and they could check out some historical ninja areas without trekking into some off-the-beaten-path museums. I recall one even had the walking on water tools used and had images of them being used. Many of the myths do come from actual events- just twisted by US media back in the day... and to some extent now too.
Side note- there is no codified code of the samurai @mythbusters. Bushido bits were written well after the heydays of the Samurai by Samurai-become-bureaucrats looking back at the "good 'ol days" and then compiled in the book made famous.

They do. It's just most media depicts them wrongly. Ninja were all about the art of deception and being stealthy. They only resort to fighting one on one if there is no choice. It's one of the many, many things I've learned watching Gaijin Goomba over the years.
That was honestly hard to watch being a trained marksman and proficient with a bow. Surely Adam or Someone on set would have known about Brandon Lee and alarm bells should have gone off... Would love to hear Adams thoughts in hindsight over on Tested about this one... Also in heat of battle its well plausible, video of baseball star catching ball about to hit a reporter is proof enough but people have also heard and ducked bullets and such traveling sub sonic, you could not replicate it if you tried though and never should.
That baseball catch was a stunt during a marketing shoot with Gilette, so not much of proof.

Even a bullet travelling at subsonic speeds would still be moving so fast relative to the speed of sound that by the time your brain processed hearing it, it would already have a bullet in it.
Let's say you're being shot at with really slow bullets from a crappy replica black powder musket because you slept with the wife of a Napoleonic wars reenactor. The speed of sound is 343 metres per second. That projectile is heading toward your adulterous noggin at about 120 m/s. Even a lucky shot with that weapon would still have to be fired from within 200 metres of you and your libido.
Setting aside air resistance, with the sound travelling toward you at 223 m/s faster than the bullet, you'd figure you'd have almost a second to react, right? Except that's the sound of the shot being fired. We're supposed to be talking about the sound of the bullet. Which is really just the sound of a projectile moving through the air. Now, it's a very energetic projectile, so it does make a sound you can hear, but not before it's so close that extra speed advantage sound has is essentially meaningless. And now you're dead, and a good marriage has been ruined. Happy?
