I have spent countless hours on my OG Nintendo DS as a child... the top screen is broken nowadays, but seeing this motivates me to repair it and get to enjoy my good old console again 🙂

Not long after the release of the DS I remember sitting next to someone who happened to be playing Mario 64 and I was blown away that something like that could run on a handheld.
Really? I was scoffing at the DS because I thought the DS graphics were pathetic compared to the PSP. But...I'm in my late 30's now and have since learned to appreciate all types of games, good graphics or not. I've been collecting DS consoles primarily for GTA Chinatown Wars and the Advance Wars games.
I had the OG twice. First one was a launch model silver that included the Metroid demo while the next one was a red Mario Kart edition. It was beautiful. The Mario Kart game came with a paper case as well.
Really cool! I have the og in light blue and sometimes still play on it because it was my very first handheld console. I had a pink Ds lite too but it sadly broke. The bottom screen is broken :( I'll keep it tho because its been my childhood
The original Nintendo ds DID actually have its own prototype model on the release year actually. Its buttons were white instead of black, it had different-looking speakers, and had black framing around the top and bottom screens. And of course, it was only for the Nintendo devs and not the public. Wonder if they still have one.
I had a GBA SP when I was a kid, then I had a DS Lite, and, uh, it rained one day and I dropped my DS in a puddle of water. It still worked unless it wasn't plugged in. Then I had a DSi that came from my cousin, and then I traded that DSi for a 2Ds. *sigh* Then in 2017 I traded that 2Ds for a 2Ds XL... and then in 2021 my 2Ds XL just stopped working because I played it so darn much the circle pad actually started drifting, and then... I now have a New 3Ds XL. Wow.
The DS Phat is probably the best way to play older GBA games because of the weaker colors on screen, which drastically changes how the oversaturated colors on a game look. The DS Lite is more of an RGB type.
I have an OG DS that I got for like $50. It was in great shape, only it didn't have the stylus. And the top display housing has some burn marks on it. But that's the only damage.
The strap is also a thumbstick thing where you wrap the strap around your thumb and you can use the touch screen as your analogstick so to speak Mario 64 ds implemented controls for this :P
The og DS was my favorite. I got this on day one when it launched. They had a deal where, you could buy two games and get one free. At least, thats how it was at my local electronics boutique.
I had the original grey bulky DS when everybody else had the newer DS lite I still had fun with it tho still work like any other DS the LAN party games were next level especially mario kart
Got the OG DS for Christmas in 2004. Came with a Metroid prime hunters demo and of course had Mario 64 DS as my first game for it. The hinge cracked around 2006 and only got worse over time the top screen would fade occasionally. Got a black DS lite for Christmas in 06 to replace my original mostly because of the hype I had for the upcoming diamond and pearl. Also got Sonic Rush and Final final fantasy 3 and somehow had Mario kart DS but I don’t remember how I got it. I had a rather decent group of friends with DS’s and I’ll never forget those times just hanging out and playing Mario Kart DS and Metroid prime hunters and that time we waited outside GameStop on a Sunday morning to pick up our copies of diamond and pearl on release date. Also random but that little strap that came with the DS I still have funny enough it’s currently attached to my N3DS. I always moved it to my newest DS and so I’ve had it since 2004.
The DS Lite was my first console. I played Super Mario Bros. and Mario Kart DS on it, and a little bit of Line Rider 2. I have MLB 2K, the math game, and Flash Focus which I never use. I'm glad that the 3DS is backwards compatible with DS games as I got it about a month ago, and didn't lose my DS library or save data.
If I remember correctly, each nintendogs version had different breeds. The best friends version, which was a limited edition had all of them. Great video, you kinda made me wanna play nintendogs again haha
Each version has different starting breeds and with progress in the game you unlock more, eventually all of them. (2 are related to items that can be found on walks.) Best friends is exactly the same but only came with this bundle and later on a DS Lite bundle. It's a special edition. I don't think it ever released outside of America.
Perhaps the stylus was what the dog has survived on all these years; hence why it's in a chewed up condition? He used it as a chew toy? Just a thought!

I have my og DS since it came out. Everything is fine. Screens, sound are working. 2 years ago I bought a new shell because the hinge broke. The plastic becomes brittle. It fell to pieces taking it apart. Lol. Well worth the time to replace the shell. Battery still fully charged for 2 years.
Unpopular opinion (probably) but I actually like playing on the original ds phat model. It has a pretty big d-pad which makes it easier to move around in 3d environments and it just feels good to hold for me.
You probably already know but there were a few original model DS that used the DS Lite screen. It's my personal preferred way to play original DS games, not sure if there are any tricks to finding one though.
I modded out my Wii during the pandemic and I love it. Later on, I invested in a 3ds, soft modded that too. Personally, I love it for the Zelda games I can't play on the Wii (or even GameCube) and it was well worth it. Some games translate very well between the Wii/ds/Wii u. Saved me a lot of money from buying switch versions of what's essentially the same thing.
I've had a phat DS for years. The d-pad is amazing. The touchscreen is kinda off, but it's cause I've used it so much. And my r button sounds a bit weird from driting so much in mkds
I originally had a blue og ds, then got a silver one after the blue one broke, then got a dsi and ds lite for Christmas one year, then bought myself a 3ds, 2ds, 2ds xl, and new 3ds xl.
I got an original silver when I was about 5/6 years old. I played Mario Kart DS and Nintendogs (dashound Edition), I absolutely loved it and would play it night and day. Unfortunately my dad asked to borrow it for a fishing trip, one unfortunate day he left it on his fishing chair something inside got loose causing the chair to collapse breaking the DS top screen. I was devastated when he got back home but they got me a black DS lite, I tend to associate the lite models as ‘replacements’ due to what happened. Even till this day I don’t let anyone touch my gaming equipment.
Never gotten the OG one honestly I forgot it was a thing, but don't like how it looks. Nah I'll stick to my DS Lite (altho I gotta clean it up since it's disgusting)

My first DS was a red DS lite that I got when I was in foster care. My dad came over to my foster home one day to drop it off because he bought it for me. I wasn’t happy with the color because red isn’t one of my favorite colors. I did eventually get a blue DS lite sometime AFTER moving out of my 3rd foster home and in with my dad. I’m much happier with the blue DS lite. I don’t have the red one anymore.

yeah but what about the screen resolution and brightness? How do you go back to DS screens....after playing on the DS lite or DSI??

I’ve had the OG since launch, and I still prefer it because of its form-factor, bottoms, and the fact that GBA carts don’t stick out.
i love this ds variant, but my fav is the animal crossing one because it has the wild world cardboard sleeve like the Nintendogs one

THhe bit of Plastic thats on the strap can double up as a stylus for your thumb or finger. Prime Hunters was goated with that vs a stylus
